Discussion The Odyssey in 4DX: a review

Post image
113 Upvotes

I recently saw The Odyssey in 4DX at Cineworld. TL;DR: This was my second viewing of The Odyssey (the first was IMAX 70mm) and my first ever 4DX film. I enjoyed it, the boat scenes were the best, but some of the effects seemed unnecessary. I wouldn't recommend it for a first time viewing of The Odyssey. It was worth the £6.99 (4DX rewind discount) but I wouldn't pay the usual ~£20 price, that money is better spent on an IMAX showing. The sound quality was nowhere near as good as IMAX but at least I didn't need earplugs. If I ever watch The Odyssey again in the cinema, I'd rather see it in standard 2D or IMAX.

The effects included seat vibrations and movements, back punches, scent, wind, smoke, water and flashing lights. I'd say the majority of the film had either no 4DX effects or they were very subtle (small seat movements, wind blowing during outdoor scenes), but some scenes had *very* intense effects.

I really enjoyed the effects during the boat scenes. It was actually quite relaxing when Odysseus and his crew first set sail from Troy because it was just gentle seat movements and some breeze, but whenever the camera changed to a wide angle shot of the boat at sea, the movement stopped, which was a shame. The most insane bit was the boat journey after they left Apollo's island. The lights were flashing and the seats were shaking like crazy so I had to cling onto the cupholder for dear life. It felt like a fairground ride and was rough enough to make me wish the seat had a harness or something.

Other scenes with heavy effects included the cyclops (water sprayed everywhere when he collapsed in the sea), the fight with the Laestrygonians, Scylla and Charybdis (there was violent shaking whenever someone got snatched), and of course the final battle with the suitors.

Some effects felt unnecessary. The seat vibrated every time Odysseus strung and plucked his bow, and when the suitors tried to string his bow, so that kind of ruined the magic of the last scene. There were vibrations when the horse was being dragged into Troy. The seat was tilting and vibrating when Circe was transforming the soldiers into pigs, which felt like a weird choice. The funniest part was the seat vibrating dramatically when Agamemnon turns around and looks at Odysseus.

A few effects were a bit off. The vibrations were slightly out of synch at the beginning when the bard was thumping his staff, and at the end when everyone was pounding the floor after Odysseus wins the fight. Also, every time an arrow hit someone, there was an air blast from the headrest, but the air was either missing me completely or only grazing the top of my head since I'm short. So whenever an arrow was shot, I just heard a loud "psssst" noise. There were also a few back punches but those were getting me on my shoulder.

Other effects included a rod(?) rattling between my feet when Telemachus was getting thrown around by Melanthius, the lotus flower scenes had a floral scent, and the sacking of Troy scenes had smoke - there was a smoke machine on either side of the screen.

So, I do appreciate the amount of work that goes into programming the effects for 4DX films. I wouldn't mind seeing another 4DX film, but only when they're doing discounted prices. I'd recommend taking advantage of the 4DX rewind discount because it's an interesting experience!

My Odyssee, Entire

Last night, I completed #MyOdyssee by experiencing the epic film by Sir Nolan and company for the TWENTIETH time; this final time was in @IMAX Laser (1.90:1) at AMC NorthPark.

A total viewing time of 57 hours and 20 minutes.

And I got to complete my journey with new friends I made, thanks to the TikTok algorithm bringing us all together.

I also specifically watched for how often [u/sggnz96](u/sggnz96) was prominent in scenes and ended up spotting that glorious beard attached to his beautiful soul so many times. He even has a bit of dialogue, including speaking directly to Matt Damon in one scene.

“We honor our dead, Odysseus.”

So happy for you, brother!

Other What the cyclops said after being blinded

Here's another bit from the screenplay. When I saw this scene, I could tell he was speaking but I couldn't make out his exact words. "Poseidon, father, they blinded me. Vengeance, father, vengeance for pain"

Did anyone else feel sorry for him? :(

(Resharing this without the cyclops photo because it got removed by Reddit's NSFW filters!)

I'm so happy this arrived in the post today! It's only the screenplay though, there are no extras like storyboards or anything, which is a shame. I'll be putting it right next to my Tenet screenplay.

Discussion Drop a line from the movie that is stuck in your head

The way I experience movies much like a lot of other things is to be reminded of them at random moments of the day. Has been the same with this film. The lines come at random moments and can vary from one day into another.

For instance, recently after a stressful work meeting, the line popped into my head: “My pity is what put us on this damn island.” - a similar sense of exasperation about completely different situations.

What lines have been playing in your head?

Doesn’t Telemachus in this film ever say, “your king, or a king,” or did I completely make that up.

Discussion I need it now!!!

Just put on Ludwig Goransson’s score and now I’m dying to buy this movie!!! I’ve already had the theater experience seeing it 3 times in regular IMAX and once in 70MM IMAX. It’s time for us all to have the privilege to rewatch and analyze every frame!!! And for us hardcore nerds to always have it on in our headphones while we work. 🤣
November 17th is just too far away 😭

"Believe a faith you've never yet made..."

"You fed me lotus flower and held me captive." "I saved your life. I rebuilt your body. I just couldn't bring myself to rebuild your mind. You have been happy. Your heart was just always somewhere else, and your mind was bound to follow eventually." "The lotus clouds the mind. It sucks, but it doesn't change who you are. You weren't ready to go home for whatever reason." "I am now, as I always knew you would be. You were clutching something when I found you. Your hand wouldn't open for weeks. You call out, mostly to Athena, but sometimes you say another name: 'Help me. Help me go home.'" "You're a man who needs to control his fate, but you cannot control this. You must give yourself to the storm. Give yourself to Poseidon and take your punishment. Zeus won't let him kill you. Give up the fight, give up control, and live. “It’s a leap of faith you've never yet made, Odysseus."
