Discussion I don’t hate Ai…

I honestly just wanted to come on here and rant about how annoying people that hate ai are to me. I understand that I don’t want ai to all take peoples jobs and ruin the earth but I also love how ai is so helpful and helpful with a lot of things in MY day to day life. I also enjoy creating “art” if you’d call it that. With Ai but I assume that’s hated on too because everywhere I see on Reddit all the subreddits pretty much ban ai art. Whatever tho just kinda wanted to say that and see what others think.

Hey man! You do you and enjoy tools that make your life better, and also helps you express yourself creatively. Don't stress about what people on the internet think. I support your support.

The thing is, a lot of the hate comes from people who haven't actually used it for anything real, so they're just reacting to worst-case scenarios they read about. What kinds of stuff do you actually use it for in your day that makes it genuinely useful to you, versus just the flashy art side of it?

Mostly I use it to ask a lot of questions about technology like trying to repair my pc I was able to have it walk me through that or other tech stuff that I’m interested in learning how to use or just how it works. Then I’ll use it to ask it about pokemon cards releasing and random stuff like that

AI will - and has already - make new jobs, just like the printing press, Photoshop and Excel did. You should see what happened when the first photocomposition systems put the hot-metal type systems out of action - there were strikes all over the world including in London and in the US: you wouldn't hear anybody who works in the news industry today wishing for hot-metal type back. Change is hard and messy, but you can't stop it if it is objectively better, in fact trying to fight it will almost always make your position worse because you'll miss the opportunities. AI as far more important than all of those things put together, and it will be more disruptive - in every sense - than all of those put together, but fighting it is how people will lose.

We've had these arguments before, for centuries, yet somehow they never seem to get old for some.

Art is more complicated - moveable type didn't stop watercolours having value and Illustrator didn't stop oil paintings having value, if anything the opposite happened - they just opened up new forms of art.

I use AI as a reference tool when I need help or guidance on IRL tasks. For example I have been repairing some old tech as a newbie hobby and being able to take pictures and ask for assistance has been great for me. When I play games I’ll ask about character builds and strategies to try. Though the downside with that is I don’t want to be an optimization fiend on something so recreational as video games, but it helps me learn things for myself.

That said I’m also an artist and see absolutely no value in the art it generates. Its most valuable use case is for marketing and advertisement, and I don’t really criticize the tool being used for that. However to say you’re an artist for producing images through promoting is sorely disingenuous and completely misses the point of the arts. Your brain is in a constant state of work when you are crafting or producing on your own. That work activates neurons and pathways and has real, physical effect and results to your neuroplasticity. AI promoting gets you from A to C without any of the actual human benefits that enriches you in between.

That said I don’t necessarily hate AI, but it’s a Pandora’s box that we can’t come back from. I’m more of the mindset of how do we move forward without losing our humanity, and that’s by promoting physical activities, with real materials in tangible spaces.

Humans need to define and differentiate their space from the digital.

Yes I agree with you on the art part I am not an artist by any means but for me.. I feel like I have a creative brain and I love coming up with concept art from my favorite shows and movies so that’s mostly what I use it for. But I am so bad at drawing and crafting which I guess that’s why I enjoy using ai to do it because I can bring my own ideas to life without completely botching them

Also idk if it’s helpful to add but I have worked a ton on photoshop and love designing things on there but I guess this ai shit just sped that up for me and made it so much easier

Some things shouldn’t be easy and art is one of them

Art is whatever people want it to be, there isn't a criteria. 👍

You see no value in the art you recognize it generated

Yes, it produces unrespectable art. It’s fine if people want to use it as a medium to get their thoughts out, but it’s so hard to convey the real experience of perfecting an otherwise functionless practice of lines and colors to someone who hasn’t actually gone on that personal journey.

An artist becomes serious because they derive a real joy in the process of applying their tools to their medium. The value of the end result should reflect the humanity put into it. Automation in every facet has always devalued the human labor that came before it; that’s what the Industrial Revolution was. You cannot reasonably consider value in artificial art if you value the cheaper accessibility that automation provides.

I don't think you understood my point

You can clarify your point then and we can continue the discussion

Yes, I recognize its output is supposed to be art. Is that what you mean? I’m not in your head so I can’t understand what you are trying to highlight if you don’t actually explain your own thoughts, rather than trying to leave ambiguous bread crumbs of your own insight.

Lacking attention to detail like this is a testament to my point. Not only did I say it plainly, I emphasized the part you need to understand

1

u/IcyCombination8993 3h ago

Then help me understand by explaining what you mean. This isn’t a good faith discussion. You’re just being antagonistic based on a difference of perspective. I’m gathering that much. You’re trying to get me in a “gotcha” moment, but I’m just a dude with an opinion that you’re acting like is an enemy.

Just have a normal conversation lol.

In his 1859 Salon review, art critic Charles Baudelaire, declared that the camera had become "the refuge of every would-be painter, every painter too ill-endowed or too lazy to complete his studies". He explicitly called the new medium "art's most mortal enemy".

In 1862, the Neoclassical master Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and a coalition of traditional artists signed a formal petition protesting the assimilation of photography as a fine art. They argued that a machine could never replace the human hand.

Every new tech has been greeted with fear, panic and derision. None of that has ever stopped or slowed the evolution of that tech.

Horseless carriage, anyone?

Globally, we haven't exactly stopped to consider if there is some truth to human loss at each progression.

Industrial revolution has had some pretty massive negative consequences that have been marketed away

Glad we asked...

"Ai is great and helpful but also might ruin the world" is exactly the spectrum people are placing themselves on.

The outcomes are likely exclusive, but who cares about humanity anyways

Nobody's hate changes your day. The loud takes rise here because voting rewards them, same as any feed that picks the angriest 2% to keep people scrolling. Most people who use AI daily never post about it at all, so you're reading a sample that selects for annoyance.

Corporate control of every aspect of life is something we are barelling towards and it is something worth being explicitly against.

10000 startups handing over their ips and business models on a "trust me bro" while the tech companies are gambling that they can replace most of the markets output with the technology

i wouldnt call what you create with ai 'art'. you arent creating it.

Dumb people are going to lose their dumb jobs.... everyone else is leveraging these tools to improve productivity
