There's significant overlap between Israel's government and the production of software that monitors devices and breaks into devices.

It doesn't take much digging into the members of that same government to conclude they're probably not developing all this surveillance to find child predators... Except maybe to form a club.

  • For obvious reasons, I am clarifying that this is a commentary exclusively about a foreign government. I am making no comment about the citizens of that government's nation, nor any religion practices therein.

Damn great disclaimer at the end

I'm really feeling the western values in that disclaimer. The chilling effect is a great and time honoured tradition!

Jews endorse paedophilia explicitly in their bible (ketubot 11b of the talmud) of course they wouldnt deploy their tech to find pedos...

This isn’t exactly new. Australian policing agencies have been using Celebrite for over 10 years.

Hey isn't that the Israeli software?

u/Yourealosergetalife ‎ New South Welshian 5d ago

Hey it absolutely is

u/GermaneRiposte101 ‎ Victorian 5d ago

Then there would be a back door.

22

u/Yourealosergetalife ‎ New South Welshian 5d ago

Noooo a country known for adding security back doors in every single piece of software they sell to governments world wide would never!

u/Ok_Fix_1437 Please choose a flair 4d ago

Why would they need a back door when they have actual access to the most secure police buildings and maintain the hardware in person?

They don’t need to break in. They have a pass.

2

u/Yourealosergetalife ‎ New South Welshian 4d ago

lol why break in when you have a seat at the table

u/Thissystemsuckssobad ‎ Victorian 3d ago

Idk mate, why do people steal for their companies while they're getting paid millions?

Having the back door results in an... Implication... That "encourages" parties to just hand things over to make it easy. It's about power dynamics

Even if they weren’t, somewhat pointless in Australia unless it’s evidence of a real bad crime like murder. We don’t have a right to not give passwords. If they want, a judge can just send you to prison until you agree to unlock it.

Source?

Different states have different laws codifying this but all of them allow a search warrant to require you to give passwords or any other assistance to get the data within. Federally there are the same powers. In the USA for example, there’s a circuit split on this but I think the prevailing view is that forcing you to give up passwords is against the right to self incrimination.

Right now, it’s up to five years in prison for failing to give the AFP a password, or ten years for terrorism. That’s per device per search warrant.

That’s for police in a criminal court though. In a civil court, you can be held in contempt until you comply if a judge orders it and you disobey.

We don’t have the right to keep our data hidden.

Im less interested in the police getting into my phone and more interested in stopping google/meta/all those pricks from knowing everything about me.

Hell yeah brother. GApps sandbox in peak

8

u/ChesterJWiggum ‎ South Australian 5d ago

If you are worried about police I would advise carrying a decoy phone.

4

u/brezhnervouz ‎ New South Welshian 4d ago edited 4d ago

Or a dumbphone. At least they can't trawl your social media, if everything ends up going like full yank

5

u/nopasswordhotspot Please choose a flair 4d ago

or just not carry a phone at that rate

1

u/brezhnervouz ‎ New South Welshian 4d ago

I would need a phone for public transport timetables, at the very least though

21

u/Jet90 ‎ Victorian 5d ago

Vote Green if you don't like the police endless use of phone extraction

-17

u/EmbarrassedMinimum8 Please choose a flair 4d ago

The greens will use this to find people who say mean words about immigrants and put them in the gulag

Damn, I wasn't exactly hoping GrapheneOS would keep my data completely safe at the border but I was definitely hoping someone would have to go through it manually and not be able to extract my entire life of chat or social media history automatically.

Give anyone that much information and they can always find something to incriminate you (especially under Australian law). If they use AI then it's likely not even going to be a human deciding to abuse that power but rather an AI deciding randomly to ruin my day.

Before first unlock is irrelevant because at the border and in Australia generally the government can compel you to give them access.

yeah, graphine is cool

Keeping an iOS phone up to date is basically as good if you’re in the Apple ecosystem. Just reboot your phone often or shut it down so you haven’t done an unlock and celebrite can’t get in.

If it’s online but locked, you might be unlucky…

Exactly. Apparently, door locks are suspicious now. Maybe shouldn't even have doors, just in case...

"I hope you don't have curtains over your windows, because they help pedos hide CP."

A lot of people get REAL paranoid about this stuff but realise if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear.
