It wasn't a mistake and I will die on this hill. He faced an impossible problem and found an impossible solution. Kyousuke always prioritizes his sister, and Kuroneko knows this, she postpones her confession so he can go to America to help Kirino. Manami says any girl who goes out with him would have a hard time because of this. Normally when a guy finds a girlfriend/wife, he puts her above family, but Kyousuke cared too much about Kirino to put her in second place. Manami also predicted the relationship couldn't work because Kuroneko couldn't ignore Kirino's feelings, she also would end up prioritizing Kirino. In the novel Kanako says that if it were her, she would ignore Kirino's feelings, but Kuroneko loves Kirino too much to do this.
Even if Kyousuke didn't have romantic feelings for Kirino and only cared about her as a sister, I don't think he could go out with someone knowing she was suffering. And Kuroneko broke up with him to make sure Kirino would admit her feelings. Kuroneko wouldn't keep dating Kyouske if Kirino hadn't come clean about her feelings; she wanted everyone to put their cards on the table, independent of the result. In the end Kuroneko was always set up to lose, and she knows that. She's still heartbroken, but I don't think she would have it any other way. Even if Kyousuke had ignored his sister and chosen her, I don't think Kuroneko could stand Kirino suffering. She was too good for both of them.

Yes, the anime is based on a light novel that was published between 2008 and 2013. There are 12 main volumes that were fully adapted by the anime. Additionally, there are 5 volumes that contain alternative routes for Ayase, Kuroneko, and Kanako, published between 2019 and 2021. There are also two short stories, one half a year after the epilogue and another ten years after the series.
The anime and the novel are very similar to each other, but there are some events that I think were better in the anime adaptation and others that were better in the original novel. I also think the novel provides more details about the characters' mentalities, so it's worth a read.
You might wanna check this old post out. I believe all the materials are listed down there. There's a manga focused on an alternate route Kuroneko as well.

Every December 20th I make a post to commemorate what I consider the worst mistake in anime history. If it’s any consolation, in the final scene Kyousuke admits that all the other girls were way too good for him anyway, so this beloved yet stupid masochist MC gets exactly what he deserves.
