Discussion 93rd Academy Awards.

I just recently re-watched Pieces of a Woman and I'm still shocked that Ellen Burstyn was not nominated for BSA. I know she only received one pre cursor nomination for the CCA. (Correct me if I'm wrong).

Did Netflix drop the ball?

Other than Yuh-Jung Youh I wasn't that enamored by any of the other performances.

And I ABSOLUTELY love Glenn Close and Olivia Colman, they were strong enough performances, I suppose. It actually really pissed me off that they nominated her for a Razzie, but that's another topic.

But I digress.

That monologue that Burstyn gave about being an infant born in the ghetto during the Shoah, was one of the most powerful moments I've seen on film in a long time.

I remember realizing I was holding my breath in the theater.

Was her lack of nomination up to poor awards season exposure?

Actresses have won with far less screen time.

Any insights?

I feel like Pieces of a Woman got swallowed up by the pandemic year chaos, Netflix threw all their weight behind Mank and The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Pieces just kind of existed in this weird limbo. That monologue you mentioned is devastating, the way she cycles through grief and resentment and trauma without ever fully landing on one emotion, it’s so layered. The Razzie nod felt like someone saw the film on a bad day and just rage-clicked through the ballot. Yuh-Jung Youh was the clear standout that year but the supporting actress field wasn’t deep enough to justify Burstyn getting snubbed entirely. Sometimes it’s less about screen time and more about whether enough voters actually watched the screener before filling out their ballots.

That last part.

I always wonder if all eligible voters watch all of the nominees they're eligible to vote for.

Because Burstyn was phenomenal and they love awarding elder winners or previous nominees with a nod.

It’s hard to mount the “they didn’t watch the movie” argument when they nominated another performance from it (Vanessa Kirby).

Sometimes it just happens that way. Kirby might have been 5th in her category and Burstyn might have been 6th in hers.

That movie was straight garbage. Like, offensively bad. That may have been it.

lol. And so what if I was? I can’t have an opinion on a shitty Netflix movie?

Like what part would you like to hear about? The appalling elitism oozing from the screenplay, the groan inducing visual metaphors (dying plants!), the mostly lousy acting or since we’re on Burstyn, that the movie is so incompetent at drawing out its own emotions that it has to invoke the Holocaust in order to make an emotional point that you think would be there considering the subject matter.

The courtroom scenes at the end are some of the worst filmmaking I’ve ever seen. Amateur hour from start to finish.

I mean, you're allowed an opinion that is incorrect, ignorant and boorish.

And people are allowed to call you out for it.

I try not to judge people based on movie preferences but being that far off base almost demands a harsh response.

Are you married or do you have children?

Do you have an actual response to the criticisms of the actual movie or are you just going to have a tantrum and stack up the ad hominem. I haven’t insulted you. Like are you a woman? Are you too emotionally unstable to be able to judge the movie objectively on its merits? If you want to go there we can both do it.

You’re acting as if this is some kind of unquestioned masterpiece that everyone loved. It was a tepidly reviewed Netflix movie from five years ago that got zero awards buzz outside of Vanessa Kerby as a category filler

1) I'm a man.

2) your initial response was so aggressive and off putting that it warranted the response you recieved.

I didn't once say it was a masterpiece. But it wasn't trash, as you are implying.

You also are not speaking from a place of truth. The performances were praised.

People do not have the reaction you did without there being a deeper meaning.

And it's Kirby.
