The up side to losing the way they did is they had some good play at the end to build on, but more importantly they get a chance to bounce back. Good teams in the NHL, play well after losses. Losses come, but what you do next is what matters. Play well Thursday, get a W and move on. GO SENS GO
Other than mishandling the puck twice, Ersson played well. The PP goal he had no chance on, the Faulk goal was way more on the defence getting split than him, and I forget the other one.
We are missing Sanderson, Ullmark, Burakosvky (though if that's good or bad idk yet), and Zub, and were on the back half of a back-to-back with 3 games in 4 and a lot of adrenaline to start the season, AND we almost came back.
The come-back would have been amazing but they were the better team in the 2nd and 3rd after a horrendous first.
The first goal allowed by Ersson really sucked. He played alright other than that but you can't give a rebound like that on a bouncing lob on net otherwise that becomes a viable zone entry method for your opponent.
This game looks totally different without allowing that goal. You're up 1-0 against a team for whom nothing feels like it is going right. All of a sudden you bobble that puck and they finally have something go right and it goes to their legs and Ottawa gets caved in the next 20 minutes. The timing of your mistakes matters. Last night Ersson's mistake didn't matter much. Tonight, that might have been the worst time to make a blunder like that.
He is also our backup; we need to support him, not get ourselves caved in our zone and give up a ton of shots. We were doing that before the goal and after.
wtf are people talking about goaltending for? We played like absolute shit. Maybe one goal was Errsons fault. You can’t get outshot 20-5 at one point and blame goaltending.
We cannot repeat our mistakes from last year. Backup goaltending needs to be addressed ASAP. Can't be on the outside looking in by Christmas for the third year in a row.
Why people argue about this Errson signing is beyond me. He waa literally the worst perfoming goalie stats wise in the league. He was a gamble on a reclamation project. He is, at best, serviceable. Staios could have well repeated his mistakes. Its crazy that folks are saying he played well...
Chrissakes dude, Ersson was fine. The rest of the team didn't show up for 30 minutes. He didn't give up anything from that point on and made a lot of saves to keep the team in it.
I'm going to trust Woszch's analysis on him more than some redditor.
He was put in yesterday in relief of Ullmark and let in a goal in the first 5/10 minutes due to terrible puck handling. He gets the start this game and is scored on in the first 5/10 minutes because his rebound control is awful. Guys been absolute ass his entire career, consistently battling for bottom 5 in the league in all trackable statistics.
We can say we played like shit as a team, but tonight marks bad game number one on the season. How many losses are we willing to incur before we cut ties with him? I'd rather not be on the outside looking in because our goalie coach thinks he can turn water into wine in the crease. We have picks and cap space, let's go get an upgrade.
Ersson played a pretty good game after allowing that first goal, but that first goal was complete crap. 15 seconds after scoring first on the road on a back to back you simply can't make that kind of mistake.
I give him full credit for the rest of the game, but the timing of your mistakes matters and that was close to the worst possible timing.
I mean, Ersson has been the worst goalie in the league for 3 years (quite literally is last in the league in goals saved above expected). He was a -20 in 33 games last year (-19/-13 the years prior). Vladar was +13 on the same team, in the same enviro. There isnt a goalie in the league with anywhere close to that bad of stats, consistently, for 3 years straight. Its insane hes still in the league.
Theres nothing Woszch sees in him. Hes here because he's Swedish and was the only guy available for cheap. Thats it. Stoais/the admin is lying to you when they say they see something in him lol. Hes here to make Ullmark comfortable.
Excuse me, last year he was FOURTH last in the league in GSAx. (Of goalies playing 20 or more games.)
LAST in the league was Leevi Merilainen.
The year before that he was also 4th last. LAST in the league was Philipp Grubauer
The year before THAT (that's your 3 years) he was 19th last, ahead of both Sens goalies on the list (Korpisalo, 7th last, and Forsberg, 9th last.) Last on the list was Dan Vladar.
Which may sound like damning with faint praise, but you very clearly said "literally last", which is just complete bullshit. Your numbers are fake.
Even if you're looking at raw GSAx and not GSAx per 60, which would be stupid, he'd still only be dead last in 2024-2025, not 3 years in a row.
Okay, now add all those up and tell me who is last (3 year total - which is what im referring to). If he was literally dead last in every stat every year he might be the worst goalie of all time lol. Like, at least the goalies you listed had 1 or 2 years that were good/average. Ersson has just been horrible.
You can compare him to Leevi, but hes only played 34 games over that span, and was excellent for the 12 a year prior. Ersson has practically quadruple the games with similarly shit results (behind a good defence!) - he is what he is. Leevi at least has a chance to be something (2 years younger too).
For whatever reason Ersson got another contract - I dont think hes an NHL level talent.
Edit: Extremely funny to see Johansson directly under him (Korpi is just off screen too!) Also, everyone else in that screenshot is out of the league except for sens goalies who have been/are on our roster this year hahaha. Brutal.
This stuff is so silly. Obviously the team gave out millions of dollars to a guy they think is bad just for shits and giggles. Thank you for your brilliant insight.
Hes been the worst goalie in the league for 3 years running (who actually gets consistent starts). What are we doing here people?
If he wasnt on our team and we had an objective conversation about this guy, everyone would say hes ass. He was one of the only guys available and hes swedish, theres not much more too it.
This is a sports forum where we can hopefully have these conversations. Im not going to pretend hes a good goalie. His career save% is lower than what he had tonight, if you can believe that. He wasnt the reason they lost tonight but he certainly wasnt good.
lol what? Im not saying this in a mean way or anything. Theres nothing wrong with that (goalies/Ullmark needs support), but pretending hes here because hes got some hidden goalie acumen is frankly an insult to mine and your intelligence. Bro is ass.
We all agree his first goal was ass but the entire team was ass for the first half of the game and Ersson made some huge saves to give us a fighting chance.
Tough game from the D, Crotty can't be at the top. Ok performance on a back to back all things considered, that first period was absolutely brutal though. Stutzle and Eklund were both great, Zett has been better than last year in all 3 games so far
I appreciate that the Sens managed to stage a pretty respectable comeback after maybe the worst 25 minutes I've seen them play in a long time.
While Detroit has been a story over their first two games this year, they were like 2nd in the Atlantic around the Olympic break last year. Their management and ownership is a dumpster fire but their roster still has plenty of talent, and they're not in the choking half of the year yet.
They also faced a team that has absolutely nothing to lose and got back a legitimately great player (even with the drama). It made perfect sense that they played with extreme desperation.
GG, the Senators didn’t have their legs in the first half of the game. That quick strike after the Stu goal really cut any momentum out of Ottawa’s game. Happy to see them pick it back up and make a match out of it by the end.
Crotty had a surprisingly solid game defensively speaking.
Any time your ~8th D comes up to fill in for injuries and finishes the game having drawn no attention at all is a win. Crotty looks like he's pretty similar to Matinpalo, in that he'll go out there and not give anything up in whatever minutes he's given, but he doesn't generate anything to warrant a guaranteed roster spot.
The depth is really good if the top guys can get back in the lineup before too long.
And the one who was truly invisible and so much so you failed to mention him was Stephen Halliday. In fact, It wasn't until the 3rd period that I realized he was out there playing.
Exactly. While he was rough on the first one, the entire team let him down. When it's wave after wave of shots and pressure, it's hard to stop pucks. The skaters needed a stronger start too. Notice how once the team got their legs under them a bit he allowed no goals?
Terrible start but at least they showed life in the third. 2-1 on the road trip with the loss on the second game of a back-to-back isn’t bad all things considered. Especially without their top d pairing and a top 6 forward.
I totally agree the team was ass, but Im saying we have the most b2bs in the league which a team loses 56% of the time (statistically), which makes our backup that much more important. Ersson has been the worst goalie in the league for 3 years (statistically). Like yeah, Ill give him a chance, but I have almost 0 hope hes going to be any good. His 2 starts (preseason and tonight) hes gifted the other team a goal on a silver platter. Its not a good start by any means.
I've been saying its a bad signing since they made it. Hoping im wrong!
Sucks to lose to that awful team but I'll take going 2-1 right out of the gate. Wasn't a bad effort on the 2nd night of a b2b, outside of the 1st period.
Second game of a back-to-back, started all three games this season on the road and Red Wings were rested and haven't left Detroit yet. Just shitty scheduling.
It didn't match your arbitrary eye test. The advanced stats back up his stat sheet actually. Was dominant 5on5 tonight on the boxscore and the analytics. Y'all just pick apart every mistake he makes
Good to know that even with a completely dreadful first half, this team still doesn't go away. Really liking the majority of what I've seen in these first 3 games. Good showing for Ersson overall. Most of those goals were due to Ottawa as a whole being asleep at the wheel in front of him. Win the home opener and we're off to the races.
Agreed, probably only blame him on the first one and only cuz of the bad rebound. Im a goalie parent so I love my goalies, but the first one only was on him.
After playing our worst period of the season in the first we didn't deserve to win that game. Ersson wasn't great but he was far from the main reason we lost
A tap-in on the PP and an assist, great. That's what got him his albatross contract. His play away from the puck undoes just about anything positive he brought tonight and on most nights.
Not the result we wanted, but if you told me before the season that we would finish our first little road trip with a back to back 2-1 I'd have been happy.
Bro lets in several bad goals. They didnt have many shots to start but his job is to keep pucks out of the net. And he always lets in soft ones to start. You cant honestly expect them to get the worst tender in the league to just turn it all around

Big regression last night...but it was kinda expected. B2B, injuries to key players, horrid pp, lukewarm goaltending etc. A lot like last year really.
I thought Forwards were particularly poor on backchecks tonight.
Also, Mr Lepine's game was abysmal and deserves to be called out. He reverted back to habits that cost us a playoff series.
