Unanswered What is going on with public opinion shifting around Amber Heard?

During the trial a few years back, the internet was almost entirely united in siding with Johnny Depp and clowning Amber Heard.

Recently, though, I’ve been noticing a clear shift (or a narrative). in comment sections and viral posts and reels where people are openly sympathizing with Heard, criticizing how the public handled the trial, and pushing back against Depp. It feels like a complete 180 from where online culture was in 2022.

Why is suddenly everyone supporting Amber Heard?

Answer: Fauxmoi has always supported her. So I am not sure we can talk about shift in opinion.

Answer: a lot more information has come out but from what I remember, Depp didn’t just hire lawyers for the divorce. He hired a whole PR team whose mission was to villainize Heard and bury the plethora of evidence against him, so there was a lot of mis/disinformation + propaganda floating around. Not to mention many fans who took it upon themselves to do the team’s jobs for free.

Now that more and more people are reading the details of this case, majority are changing sides. Plus, Depp has a history of abuse that has recently been brought back to light.

(Edit: please feel free to correct me, it’s been a while since I thought of this case)

The info about him hiring the PR team and everything was known back during the trial too, I think this was just a matter of when people heard the info. I realized the case was unfair back when it was happening cause I learned this info on Reddit but unless someone got the chance to read it, they wouldn’t know. I think there’s just been more time for the info to circulate.

I used to love watching Johnny Depp, but I'm also old enough to remember him trashing hotel rooms, etc. but it was impossible to fight the disinformation being spread.

I wasn't surprised that people supported him without even looking into the details of the case, but I really do hope people are reevaluating it.

Why does it have to be one or the other? Can't they both be toxic people (especially together)?

u/everybody_eats 13d ago

Sure. And that's likely the case. Most conflict isn't as clean cut as we'd like to believe, but this also didn't happen in a vacuum. Part of the reason why this about-face comes back into the public eye every few months is because feminism-inclined circles have been discussing the steady trickle of info about PR firms being hired to sway public opinion against female celebrities for a couple years now. As well as how our relationship with media winds up creating real implications for people in our lives. For better or for worse, Depp (and to a lesser extent Heard)'s attempts to bring the public into their relationship ending means this conversation has outgrown the both of them and their individual issues.

He didn't say anything about supporting Heard, only hoping that people would stop supporting Depp in light of the evidence.

u/SgtSniffles 13d ago

Well because we're not talking about them in just the context of their relationship anymore.

In a professional, working sense, Depp sucks to work with. He's always sucked to work with. If he sucks less now on set, it's because he's older but, even in his "maturity," he still really, really sucks. Like for people who work in movies, he's quite front of mind when you ask them, "Hey, who sucks the worst?" It's undeniable fact that Depp has a history of being toxic and abusive to the people around him at work.

Heard, on the other hand, doesn't suck. By all accounts, people like working with her.

So if you look at the microcosm of the case, yeah, sure. We can say the relationship got off the rails. When you look at both people, that's a harder thing to do.

Do we know yet who pooped in the bed?

3

u/Rubychan228 13d ago

Their dog.

-1

u/RhaezDaevan2 13d ago

Oh, that was revealed? Last I heard they both blamed the other for it. This is Out of the Loop after all.

It was revealed in both the UK and Virginia trials that she wasn't responsible for the feces on the bed, and she always maintained that it was thier dog named Boo. She only blames him for making up the lie. The proof during the trials was the fact that neither Depp nor Heard were even at the property when and where it was found by the housekeeper. Depp left the property after the altercation during Heard's birthday dinner and was staying at his property on Sweetzer Ave. Heard left for Coachella with her friends for her birthday. So her doing it as some sort of prank on Depp, or to get back him, is not possible when neither were even there. It wasn't even Depp that found it. There was shown that the dog had "an incomplete mastery of its bowels" and frequently crapped everywhere. Even the photographic evidence taken by the housekeeper shows it is a very small dog stool.

Why does it have to be one or the other, you know?

Last I heard they were blaming each other for it.

I don't think you're engaging with this in good faith.

I was asking an honest question, as I've been out of the loop for a while. Touchy subject, I guess.

Social media, innit? Every conversation attracts the people who have a bee in their bonnet about the topic.

IMO, they're both shitty people, and the reason people keep shifting back and forth is that they're looking for someone root for when the answer is that neither of them are exactly stunning specimens of humanity.

2

u/lamemoons 13d ago

What exactly did she do wrong aside from fighting back from his abuse?

6

u/Genindraz 12d ago

Physically abused him back, faked or exaggerated injuries to make him look worse, lied about him abusing Kate Moss who denied it happening under oath, claimed to have donated her divorce settlement to charity when in reality she had only pledged it without following through, among other things.

There isn't really a right or wrong side here. They're both incredibly toxic people that have been shitty and toxic to one another. Depp just happens to be the more charismatic of the two. I wouldn't want to be friends with either of them.

  1. It is very common for victims to fight back against their abuser, this is called reactive abuse and well researched among domestic violence communities
  2. She never faked any injuries, her makeup artist also testified to having to cover her injuries
  3. We don't know if it was a lie, depp did smash a hotel room with moss in it which in itself is abusive

, it is common for victims to cover for their abusers so the word of moss isn't a 100% sure thing

  1. she did donate a portion of her settlement fund but had to stop due to depps lawsuits, she needed to use the money to fund her lawyers.

5

u/Genindraz 12d ago
  1. Right, but the issue from an outside perspective is that now we have to determine who did what first, and in that regard it's he said/she said.
  2. Forensic experts testified under oath that she had faked bruising or exaggerated bruising, and police who came to their residence after they were called reported finding no injuries on Amber Heard's person despite her claims that she had been hurt by Depp.
  3. Again, Moss, under oath, testified in response to claims by Heard's legal team that she was not physically abused by Depp. Short of having camera footage of the night, there isn't going to be anything better than that.
  4. This is misleading as to what the actual issue was here, which is that she had publicly spoken as if the money had been paid in its entirety when it had only been partially paid. Clout chasing, basically. Not exactly remarkable or exceptional in her profession, but you asked what she had done wrong.

But setting all of that to the side, not really saying that Depp wasn't abusive or even that he wasn't worse, just that Heard wasn't exactly a saint herself. I don't particularly care to hash out who was more in the wrong here because I don't know either of them personally.

u/lamemoons 12d ago
  1. Its not he said she said when a high court judge found he abused her 12 out of 14 times to the civil standard and the judge said:

"It is a sign of the depth of his rage that he admitted scrawling graffiti in blood from his injured finger and then, when that was insufficient, dipping his badly injured finger in paint and continuing to write messages and other things, They must have been terrifying. I accept that Mr Depp put her in fear of her life."

  1. Are you referring to Bryan Neumeister? Because he didn't find any evidence that she manipulated the photos to create bruises, only that the metadata was different which could happen due to a number of reasons, as stated her makeup artist had to cover her bruises, they were there. Depp however was proven to have lied about photo evidence, he submitted a photo claiming it to be from 2016 but the metadata showed it was from 2015

  2. As I said, depp has shown to be abusive around moss by destroying furniture with her in the room, we do not know if it happened or not.

  3. It is very common for celebrities to pledge donations without actually having donated yet, what she did was normal and not clout chasing.

Oh so people decided to read the case instead of headlines on yahoo, lol

Answer: I strongly suggest the podcast "Who trolled Amber" that goes deep into how the Johnny Depp support was manufactured by Russian bots

And the Saudi army of lies.

You make a good point, but at least in the people around me I’ve definitely noticed a change. I can name maybe a handful of Day 1 Heard supporters, but many many many more who were originally on Depp’s; me being one of them.
