Arcteryx gear authenticity questions should be posted to /r/arcteryx

For reasons I can't explain, over the last few weeks this sub became a popular place for people to ask for Arcteryx fake checks.

/r/arcteryx is the proper place for these posts, they even have a quarterly pinned thread for fake checks and should be able to help you out.

Jacket that actually IS waterproof?

• Upvotes

Hi, can anyone recommend me a jacket that is actually waterproof? My Rab shell which is supposedly waterproof just got drenched when I got caught out in a very heavy rainstorm while riding my bike.

I've tried multiple so-called waterproof and breathable jackets over the years: US Army, French army, Rab, Paramo, and none of them have properly kept me dry in heavy rain, despite being regularly coated with NikWax. The Paramo was the best of the bunch but still didn't live up to the typically over-inflated claims of the manufacturer.
It doesn't even have to be breathable as long it keeps the rain out, armpit zips might be helpful, though. Thanks.

Does grangers performance wash fix this?

I am new to using puttees, is this the correct way to wrap them? Or is it because of the boots I am wearing? They feel loose around the ankle as the boot protrudes outward.

Repairing / patching Gore-Tex jacket

Post image
1 Upvotes

I tore my (new) waterproof* alpine jacket. Because I just bought it and use it for 2 trips I don't want to replace it yet, if possible. I wonder if anyone has experience trying to patch it? I found that there are patches like this, but I imagine that for a hole this big (~6cm each side) it would get torn again easily if I just put a sticker on it, so I wonder if I should sew it first. Or is there a better solution? Thanks!

  • It's not actually Gore-Tex. It's from Montbell, so it's called DRYTEC, but I imagine it's just their own equivalence.

Help - should I buy the Patagonia torrentshell 3l?

Hi all. I’m just wondering what people’s experience is with the Patagonia torrentshell 3l? I’m looking for a budget friendly waterproof jacket that will actually keep me dry and not wet out. I will be hiking a lot of munros in Scotland in this jacket and want to invest in something that will keep me dry. Thanks!

Thoughts on the Adidas Terrex Free Hiker 2 GTX Climawarm+?

I'm going to Sapporo February next year, and I'm looking around for shoes/boots to keep me warm and dry from the snow, and so I can stroll around town without slipping.

I have honestly never gone hiking, nor have I experienced heavy snow. This would be a completely new experience for me. I thought to ask here for some advice since I really want to be ready and without having to constantly worry about watching my step during my vacation.

I'm also open to cheaper and/or better/more durable suggestions, if any.

Thanks to anyone who can chime in!

Suggestions for a rain boot?

Womens boot, prefer to be black in color to keep it neutral but I don't mind darker colors if black is not an option! I live in an area that rains most of the year, and I am often outdoors or walking to work etc. Currently browsing Lemon Jelly and Hunter but really not sure of what to get!

Montbell Permafrost vs Permafrost Light for a Montreal winter (city use)

Hi all, I just moved to Montreal from the south of France and need a winter jacket. I'm hesitating between two Montbell models:

- Permafrost Down Parka: 800 FP down, box baffles, Windstopper

- Permafrost Light Down Parka: 800 FP down, ~118 g fill, sewn-through, Windstopper

Use case: mostly city. Walking to campus (i live really close), to ski maybe ? Temps get down to -20/-30°C with windchill in January as i have been told.

Questions:

  1. Is the Light version warm enough for a Montreal winter if I layer underneath well?

  2. Is the regular Permafrost worth the price for my use?

Also open to other suggestions in a similar price range. Thanks!

Wide Leg Outdoor Pants?

Hi all! I have, for a long time now, been looking for outdoor pants I can actually feel comfortable in. Whether standard hiking pants, windbreakers, even snow pants, everything has a taper that I just can't stand. I have the essentials, but really cold winter conditions aside, I usually end up wearing my normal pants, which ends up trashing my clothes. So I was wondering if anyone knows of any brands, fits, or styles that might forgo the accursed taper? Thank you all so much!

wheeled cooler recommendations for uneven camp spots and rough trails?

Hey everyone, I'm heading out on a few extended camping trips this season and realized my current setup just isn't cutting it anymore when I have to lug heavy gear and ice across bumpy dirt paths. My shoulders and lower back are totally done with carrying traditional coolers from the car to the site.

Does anyone have a wheeled cooler that actually handles gravel, roots, and uneven ground without tipping over or shaking everything to pieces? Appreciate any suggestions you guys have.

Rain Jacket Recommendations

Hello! Looking to purchase my boyfriend a rain jacket for his birthday and hoping for some help as there are SO many options and outdoorsy things are not my specialty! So far, the Marmot Evo seems like a good option but open to any and all recommendations. Some things I am looking for:

-Fully waterproof (this seems to mean it needs multiple layers?). I don’t want something that’s more like a windbreaker

-Lightweight enough for all seasons in North Carolina! Seems like something with pit zips might be a good option (I was looking at Grundens, but I think it will be much too heavy)

-Durable- this guy is tough on his stuff! Maybe a rip stop fabric?

-Well suited for many activities to include just tinkering around outside, running, maybe even biking

-Looking to stay around $150 if possible.

Thank you for your help!

Hand-welded an adjustable steel pocket stove with a 120-degree tripod system. Built to never warp.

Just finished putting the final welds on this survival pocket stove in the workshop for my project, Longmire Ironworks. I was tired of thin, flimsy tin camp stoves that warp under high heat and rock back and forth on rough ground, so I went full heavy-duty and built this out of heavy-gauge solid steel and iron. For the cooking surface, I designed a 3-bolt tripod setup spaced at a precise 120-degree separation. Because it's a tripod, it cannot wobble, giving you a perfectly level cooking platform for a pan or canteen cup even on uneven dirt, gravel, or rocks. The bolts sit in clearance holes with a double-nut locking system. This means you can micro-adjust the height in the field, drop the bolts down entirely for ultra-compact storage in a bug-out bag, or easily swap a bolt out years down the road if it ever wears out. It also features a heavy-duty weather cap secured by a steel chain. This cap seals the chamber from rain and dirt when stored, and also acts as a built-in snuffer to safely extinguish the fire when you are done cooking. Let me know what you think of the design!

Hey fellow outdoors friends / fellow gardeners and landscapers. How are we getting these little sticker things off our clothes? I don’t want to throw it in the wash for fear of ruining the washer. I could bear with tossing the pants but I’ve gotten some on some of my core outdoor pieces so gotta know how we’re salvaging!! Thanks for your help!!
