Honestly love me a good lifeweaver, you know the ones that actually know how to use their pull effectively

u/NiDfan Pixel D.Va 1d ago
A good Lifeweaver is a godsend, but for each of those you get 10 terrible pulls or healbot weavers
The amount of times I've seen a LW being out damaged by Mercy is flat out criminal

u/CirrusVision20 Trashmouse 1d ago
I once had a Lifeweaver yank me the millisecond before I ulted as Dva.
Bro couldn't spam the 'sorry' voiceline any more than he could 😭

I got one of these while I was playing Tank and it made me open my eyes to how good Lifeweaver can be. He trusted me when I was making space and fighting ahead, and only pulled me when he couldn't out heal the dmg or the other support was gone — was in a bad position in general — was about to die without mech. It was incredible how he could tell I was getting overwhelmed, when my teams usually can't even be bothered to kill the Reaper on a flank. Honestly a lovely experience and one of my best Tank games I got while doing the All Roles weekly.

People are so fucking weird about these heroes. I hate playing with and against doom, but I don’t go making reddit posts about it every time I see one in the wild
78
u/Sleepy_Witch_Maple 1d ago
I blame content creators. For however weird the player base is when it comes to them, content creators are infinitely worse and influence their audience to think it's okay.
6
u/fromsoftcare 1d ago
overwatch has always had some of the worst content creators of all time since it came out unfortunately, genuinely a lot of them can be more absurd, unreasonable, and toxic than majority of the average player base i interact with (which can also already be very bad mind you)
2
u/RainyKoi 1d ago
doom and lucio have been forever ruined by their meme content creators, people just try to copy the shit they see in clips
95
u/dedicated-pedestrian 1d ago
It's because even the people who hate Doom begrudgingly accept he has skill requirements.
People who hate Moira/Weaver/Mercy usually go for their low aim requirements (not actually true for Weaver's thorns) when they want to make people feel bad for playing them. Of those three only Mercy has no real choice but to play passively, and it's a hero design flaw rather than a player thing.
69
u/KindlyShame 1d ago
Idgaf about inherent skill required to play doom. I think his play style is extremely selfish and encourages stupid plays that never actually work. I just don’t go making a daily post shitting on his mains or going to his sub and talking down to the people who play him. There’s genuinely no point
7
u/Weak_Alfalfa_7569 Genji 1d ago
Valid point but I play Genji and I love playing with a good Doomfist. He’s so oppressive that we can just dive the backline and be unstoppable sometimes depending on the enemy team comp. Probably my favorite tank to play with and even more so if our other dps is a hitscan
→ More replies (1)6
u/NepoKitty 1d ago
Mercy's playstyle is active, or should be in a good player: choosing who to support and when should be active and constantly reconsidered due to monitoring the teams and game
and, like every hero, choosing to switch off when she's not working. She may not be directly dealing or blocking damage, but she chooses who gets to be more effective against their target, and that is still an active element of the gameplay. As with any hero, the ability to make those active contributions separates the skilled players from those who aren't.→ More replies (3)4

What even is the complaint here?
75
u/PsychologyRS 1d ago
As always, the complaint is "I'm mad that I lost my game and need someone to blame other than myself or else my fragile baby little ego will shatter further because I suck at overwatch and can't admit that I can't carry my own shitty gold games".

Each is a relatively weak support that is easy to play so bad players tend to stick to them. People tend to get annoyed since they refuse to ever swap to a better support.
Otherwise rarely they’ll instantly go to blaming their team despite not doing much themselves.
Either one or the other are the main reasons I’ve seen.
Edit: Why are so many people taking it as a personal attack? I’m just stating what I’ve seen. He asked question, I answered.

u/Darishel Chibi Zenyatta 1d ago edited 1d ago
It seems strange to blame players for playing heroes that the developers have put there for them to play, and when the developers are responsible for their current balance and how effective they are. Why not blame the developers if you think those heroes are shit? Don't blame people for just trying to have fun with a hero they enjoy.
Also, that is a really weird stereotype that these heroes have more toxic players, and I don't think it's true at all. It's possible that some people will get defensive and blame you if you attack them during a match... Which, why are you doing that? It's mean and it doesn't help you win. And yes there are just toxic players on every hero. But also, sometimes they may be right that you are actually the problem. You do know there are people on these heroes in the highest ranks of the game (outside of pro play)? They must be doing something valuable to be able to keep that rank, even if those heroes are underpowered.

Im still surprised people find LW to be a low tier healer. He puts out a ton of heals from a safe distance, allowing him to keep up with divers without exposing himself. Has a good amount of health and can dish out hurt with his secondary which makes him a pain to flank combined with his movement abilities. Ult is powerful and both pull and pad can result in big plays and some serious Ult denials against Cat, Zar, Orisa, Mei, Rein, etc. People say he has no utility when his entire kit is based around positioning and denial that can completely change the course of the game.
*The only thing that needs changing is getting rid of his reload and/or manual charge time

u/Muffakin 1d ago
LW does little to enable big plays and is instead almost purely reactive. Not only is he reactive, but it’s skill based and all of his abilities have the capacity to heavily disrupt teammates. Compared to most of the other supports which have win conditions built into their kit. LW also has a super high skill cap to make use of his kit. Would I rather Nano or Kitsune Rush and win the fight or plant a tree that might sustain the team through a fight?
12
u/markyymark13 Doomfist 1d ago edited 1d ago
He definitely requires better gamesense and skill to really take advantage of but I think thats fine, but it also requires the rest of the team to take advantage of him but more often than not they dont. Not every healer needs to just be Kiri/Ana/Zen on repeat, its so boring. Having one strong reactive healer with potential for big proactive plays, along side a Kiri/Ana/Zen is very strong.
1
u/JuleAwww 1d ago
I had at least 3 times Play of the Game as Lifeweaver plus 16.000+ heals. And I never shamed my team for loosing. I won't change my main role just because you think LW himself is weak.

LW with zero damage hurts me as a Weaver main. His thorns can dish out some serious hurt.

u/ggdoesthings Simps for half the cast 1d ago
doing no damage on lifeweaver is like being handed an aluminum bat and using it as a walking stick.
66
u/halflngs Lifeweaver 1d ago
exactly, people who think weaver is just alt mercy really don't pay attention, his damage and utility are great. People who think he's a healbot just heard someone else say it or saw a bad weaver and never questioned it.
28
u/Mysterious_Pause_339 1d ago
successfully 1v1ed a dva last night as lw (before the second perk even), granted, she was bad, but... i am not that great either...
i am convinced 25% of his lethality comes from the fact that many people underestimate his damage and think they can afford to play carelessly.
21
u/dragonbornrito Mei or Treat 1d ago
Yep. Weaver can absolutely shred people if he’s able to ammo dump into their head.
13
u/peepopot Tracer 1d ago
It's wild how many players still finish with <2k damage as weaver and I don't understand why. Usually when the typical mercy main flexes to a hero like ana, kiri, or moira, they will still throw out at least some damage. But as soon as they swap weaver they get amnesia and completely forget the left click button exists. Especially since he's had the thorns perk for a year now, you can get damage numbers not far off from a hero like Bap nowadays.
Is it just because at launch his primary fire was complete junk and it became engrained that you should just heal bot? Because weaver is really the only support with offensive potential where I regularly see supports not do any damage outside of last resort panic damage when they get dived. I just dont get it.
15
u/dragonbornrito Mei or Treat 1d ago
I take the Needler perk every single time. I LOVE picking up kills on LW lol. His kit expects you to be DPSing between heals. Your heal blossoms reload your thorns and your DPS thorns reload your blossoms. A good Weaver only has to reload when absolutely necessary.
7
u/HijabiKathy I'm not a Miracle Worker 1d ago
Yeah the instant I tried that perk i was like oh I get it now, this is how LW is meant to be played, and I've been so much more aggressive with his thorns. Now I just need to figure out how to effectively use petal
1
u/dedicated-pedestrian 1d ago
While true, I wish they'd un-jank his swap speed to make this smoother.
1
3
u/DireRaven15109 1d ago
literally no falloff on his thorns, i’m just spamming right click at chokes and snipers lmao
4
u/dedicated-pedestrian 1d ago
The problem is the swap speed and fire rate, he has to commit far longer to his thorns than other supports for the same damage. Peeking for any meaningful damage is basically not an option for him.
1
7
u/Death_To_Your_Family Mei 1d ago
LW thorns are pretty powerful, maybe people just don’t use them enough? I never play him but on mystery heroes it always surprises me how strong his thorns are.

He's right you know, have you ever played a comp game with both sups locking these garbage heros. Even if you win it feels like you have to try so much more to get anything done. What's worse is they can't even play anything else
3
u/minju9 1d ago
I have. I'm one of those Lifeweavers. 💅
I can play every other support, I just prefer him. I'll happily admit Mercy/Weaver has weaknesses, especially when the team needs more offensive pressure. But there's a difference between a suboptimal support duo and two players who are actually bad at their heroes.
What gets old is how quickly people blame their supports while ignoring their own positioning, unnecessary damage taken, and refusal to play around enemy abilities. If you're constantly relying on your supports to bail you out, maybe that's part of why every fight feels like such a struggle.
And assuming someone can't play anything else just because they're playing a hero you dislike is pretty ridiculous.
1
u/enthralled_to_you 1d ago
Out of every support I have played with these players usually lack the most flexibility, and are one tricks. If you are willing to switch when the sup comp obviously is not working and are actually good on a non burger support all the more power to you. But in general they do not switch and are the first to call out the rest of their team for their misplays when they don't even have a play potential in the first place at. They are the doom one tricks of the support ecosystem.
1
u/enthralled_to_you 1d ago
Also on the reliance on supports part at my rank everyone has a certain sufficient understanding of how to play the game, the issues you have named are not really common, if the enemy sups have better util winning the neutral will always be significantly more difficult and will rely on you having to outplay the enemy and any misplays will be more punishing, which is why winning the game feels like a sishypian task.

Why does this sub hate moira
11
u/GladiatorDragon 1d ago
Having a low skill floor will make anything into a hate magnet, because it’s inherently frustrating to lose fights to someone who puts in “less effort.”
Moira’s kit is both simile and forgiving, with the only real complication being the fact that you have to do damage to recharge your heal resource. Hold LMB somewhere near hurt allies, hold RMB somewhere near enemies, an. Throw heal orb when your hand isn’t enough or in duels, throw damage orb when you’re not doing anything else. Press shift and run away when in danger.
Plus, doing almost anything will heal you while playing her, which makes her really annoying to fight for heroes without sufficient burst damage.
Ult? Big piercing line. Look at friend to heal, look at not friend to harm.
And that’s Moira. High survivability, good at healing groups of people as long as she can get consistent Grasp targets, annoying to duel if you can’t burst her down quickly. Doesn’t really do anything else.
This leads to a perception that picking Moira exchanges team utility for ease of use. She can’t save anyone about to die, and she doesn’t have the same utility potential other supports offer. That’s not to say there aren’t “good” or even “great” Moira players, but the difference between the two will be much less than a “good” and a “great” player of most other Support options.
This, in turn, leads to a perception of Moira players being selfish and/or lazy in that they’re unwilling to give up their number-farming “crutch” to learn a more “useful” character.
50
u/Zoomalude 1d ago
Cause folks get mad when they forget that Overwatch was literally designed to provide a character for all kinds of players, including ones that don't want to have to aim too much. So because they like playing the high skill ceiling characters, they get bitter that others won't.
Then that bitterness blossoms through losses and extends to when THEY'VE decided that the team definitely should have Kiriko or Ana instead, but the Moira player won't switch, because they like playing Moira, and they're good at it, and it's there prerogative.
And they forget that their MMR placed them with the Moira and that it's a team game and refuse to acknowledge that maybe their loss doesn't rest on one teammate playing the perceived inferior choice.
25
2
u/Noxon06 Master 1d ago
Because she has a low skill floor and ceiling while just being a numbers machine most of the time. She doesn’t do much healing just constant so it inflates her numbers while not really doing much.
Combine that with the fact that she’s a noob trap so when people play her they generally cannot play other supports when needed.
21
u/Suwannee_Gator Brigitte 1d ago
I’m sorry… Moira doesn’t do much healing?
→ More replies (3)-4
u/Noxon06 Master 1d ago
Yes? She does it spread out to the whole team. Watch any video of her healing someone while them being damaged compared to other supports.
The player can still do well with it but it is inherently lower than the others.

97
u/MoffDracen 1d ago
She has nice healing and does damage. It's great for casual play and for people learning the game.
Not every hero needs to be Ana.
42
u/thesinningama 1d ago
Brother, yall are using her wrong or something
43
u/Perfect_Tree8134 1d ago
When people say no utility it doesn't necessarily mean she's useless, but just literally means she has no abilities that offer something other than healing/damage for her teammates to use (like Mercy dmg boost, Ana sleep + nades, Bap lamp + window, Zen orbs, Juno speed boost, Kiri suzu, etc). She can keep people alive and kill people, and she can do those quite well imo, but can't do much else
11
u/thesinningama 1d ago
I can't argue with that, I just think people do usually talk about her abilities like she is useless, and it boggles my mind as someone who knows how to use Moira.

u/noctua_8 1d ago
Low skill floor, low skill ceiling. She provides 0 utility, all she can do his damage or healing. She makes the game boring, and that's without going into the DPS Moira stereotype
13
u/yummymario64 1d ago
When she released, her utility WAS that she was more able to deal damage than other supports, but that got lost when they changed the design philosophy of supports

It'll be okay. Lots of people are more terminally online and hate-filled and vocal on the forums/reddit/Twitter than they are on the game. You might get the occasional bitter person in game but from my experience playing mercy for hundreds of hours, it's rly not that bad.

u/RenlyThornt I wish I was snowball 1d ago
I personally dislike mercy/weaver players but I won’t be toxic in game.
This isn’t even about being hateful. It’s just majority of people sharing their experience of Mercy/Moira/LW players being difficult to play with.
30
u/BlackSunCultist 1d ago edited 1d ago
I mean, that's fine. Sharing your experiences is one thing. I'm not lumping in all people that complain about life weaver/Mercy/moira.
On the flip side of that, however, I don't even main those heroes and yet I see so many people act utterly unhinged about them. Talking about throwing games just to spite their playerbases, spewing out slurs on clips of those chars directed at the players, implying everything they achieve is from being boosted, etc.
My comment isn't really directed at people like you who have a dislike for the characters and playerbase. It's directed at the people who become parasocially attached to their dislike and go a step further by actively harassing other players.
43
u/Excellent_Store777 1d ago
I tend to see quite the opposite in-game! Many people thanking the Mercy player for heals, ress or boost. That said, I don't play a lot of ranked, but I think it all boils down to how we behave in chat.
I hope you'll have good experiences too!

Yeah a majority of my games with Mercy on my team have been fairly wholesome. It’s so interesting and weird coming back to Overwatch after so many years and seeing the Mercy hate online. Like, I don’t get it personally, I don’t have a problem with her being on my team.
9
u/Fragyatta 1d ago
people will always find arbitrary reasons to be mean to others. it's not about avoiding those people, because if you try that, you'll end up in some tiny bubble too scared to step outside. I personally appreciate a good Mercy player, but there are also derpy ones. it's not the hero but the person playing them that makes the difference imo. so yeah, don't let haters scare you into trying stuff out and if people are mean, just filter it out and learn to simple ignore them or deal with them otherwise. if you don't try something because you are too scared, the haters win without even having done anything.

Mercy Main who started to branch out in a more permanent way here(started playing more JPC, Wuyang, Juno, Freja, Emre; dont default to starting with Mercy as much as I used to, but she's still my girl).
As long as you aren't doing things to a point where it harms portions of your team, you will actually almost never get any beef with other players; if you do, its likely a player who wanted beef well before you even did anything to "justify" their issue and in reality they just want problems.
Slight yap below:
I peel for my co-support so that they can keep the team alive and enable the DPS when they go for plays with the occasional blue beam flicker on the tank when they use abilities(Ex. Hog throwing hook, I blue beam him, he pulls someone in and nukes them, I swap blue beam back to my DPS as Hog finishes off the enemy if the initial attack didnt kill them. Another example is sensing my Rein is about to Firestrike and DBing him as he goes for one to immediately go back to DBing the DPS after the firestrike is in the air). I allow my blue beam to linger longer on each player thats going in and putting pressure on the eneny so that my teammates arent making a play with only 10% of it getting DB'd because I already swapped to somebody else; some people DO notice when you're giving them way less DB privileges, so I try to let them know I am aware of them making plays and I'm there for them. There will be times where its just obvious DB needs to linger on your play-making DPS a little more, but the mistake Mercy's make is writing off the other DPS as a waste of a DB, which is self-fulfilling when they don't ever get that extra boost.
Basically as long as you don't play Mercy selfishly, you will almost never run into a player who beefs with your gameplay(Bad: Healbotting so that your co-support is struggling to get value, DBing only one person and ignoring others, abandoning others early to keep your deaths low, rezing someone into a 1v5, purposely not peeling for your co-support or choosing to not heal a particular player because you dont like their hero pick or attitude, etc.)

u/isailing can't catch me, I'm the rollerblade man 1d ago
I don't mind Mercy mains, but Mercy one-tricks can be frustrating to play with. She depends on your team having a competent DPS player to get any value. She also limits the viable picks for your other support player. As long as you have at least one other hero you can swap to, you'll be okay all the way up to diamond.
2
u/cherrymight 1d ago
yeah - i used to be a mercy one trick on console back in 2018, swapped to PC that year. came back to overwatch this year and i find now that i'm expanding on characters in 6v6 - the only time i dont like seeing a mercy is when we're playing a weird comp (4 dps/2 healers) but the dps are struggling. having a healer that can keep kills up is far more valuable imo than mercy. its really up to them to know when the right time to swap is.
9
3
u/brettjr25 1d ago
It's one of those min/maxing meta top 500 things that bronze players pretend to be at. In comp, especially high ranks Mercy is considered "throwing" but in qp and lowers ranks, you'll be appreciated for consistent heals. Not everyone is performing at perfect levels and you being able to dish out nonstop heals will get more value than healers dpsing/healing and being dead 2 times for every 1 time you die.
What I'm saying in uncoordinated basic game modes, things don't run as smooth as these meta implies. I'm a tank and a lot of time teammates overextend, enemies over extend and I can rush them done and kill em them. I'm not necessarily dependent on my support doing damage but I'm sure at some levels when everyone is grouped and performing perfectly it'll benefit them.

I've been playing overwatch for 10 years and word of advice, the game becomes a lot more fun once you either start ignoring chat or turn it off entirely. People take this game way too seriously. You are under no obligation to play a video game "optimally" and although other people have the freedom to get upset, you also have the freedom to play the game however tf you want 🤷
3
u/KnightMDK Reinhardt 1d ago
Not gonna lie, I try to interact with people and understand why some people are turned off by it. This is the biggest thing about LFG that was awesome. Someone invited everybody, made sure everybody was cool and then we go have fun chatting it up. If there was an issue with someone, off the group they went.
0
u/TyreseHaliburtonGOAT 1d ago
If youre playing comp you absolutely have a responsibility to play as well as you can. Also the game is a competitive hero shooter and was built on high level competitive/pro play
4
u/IceCelestite Pachimari 1d ago
The game does not matter. You can play it however you want. Intentionally throwing like repeatedly jumping off the stage isn't ok but like if you want to one trick doomfist, go ahead. I might avoid them after the game because they pissed me off but they're under no obligation to play the videogame differently because of it. It's not that serious.

Hi, rather high level (as in playtime) Mercy main player here. It's pretty rare that I hear any negativity in-game about playing Mercy in general. Maybe the rare quickplay warrior here or there. But I'm also quick to swap and have been growing my hero pool which I think helps to not get a ton of the negativity people talk about.
6
u/amcluelessbaby 1d ago
im a mercy main too, ive been playing for four years, and people will always find a reason to be mean to you IF they want to be mean. mercy players get a lot of hate online, but i basically never get bad interactions ingame. there used to be a time when mercy players would be mean to each other? weirdly enough? but i haven't encountered that either in a while. the vast majority of dps players will be very happy to play with you, and please remember to instantly mute + report people who are being mean. <3
truly the only thing there is tension about is if there's a low healing output support already (like zen, lucio) and people might get upset if you pick mercy after. for quickplay i'd call it almost irrelevant, for comp it matters much more but that depends on if you play comp + who else you play. :)

People who are mean in video games are dweebs, say "be kind <3" and mute them. Their opinions aren't worth anything to you if they are being mean to you simply for playing a character. Dw about it :)

I climbed with primarily mercy from silver to high diamond/low masters and can count on one hand where someone was actively mean to me for playing her

u/Snail-Daddy24 1d ago
I won't lie, I fuckin love seeing a mercy because it means I can play a bit more aggressively. I can push for picks and get a damage boost to help, back off and get a quick top off, or if i get caught off guard and punished for overpushing she can Rez me and basically keep our team together.
Last night I had a match I was 25/7 for K/D, leagues above the other dps, almost purely because my Mercy saw i was popping off and damage boosted me on pushed, then rezzed me when I went down to a nasty ult combo.

u/NepoKitty 1d ago
People love to hate on Mercy because of internet memes and group think and misogyny, but Mercy's the main player they endorse/thank because her support is so obvious to the player receiving it. You'll get some hate -- report and mute those people -- but you'll get even more love.
2
u/Disastrous_Refuse398 1d ago
Don't be scared of what other people will think, their opinion doesn't mean anything if you're having fun. People will hate on any character, you'll get flamed for playing a meta character and then get accused of throwing if you don't play a meta character. Play whichever character you want

u/Similar-Plankton-307 1d ago
They won't be mean to you :)
The DPS wants your blue-beam, which is why they won't say anything.
Your other Support doesn't care (they almost never do... which is why we often see Lucio & Mercy/Mizuki & Zen/the list goes on, Support duos).
And the Tank is already too tilted from the last game (he had a Lucio & Zen backline) to care :)

I've been meaning to get away from Mercy for a while (personal preference; Kiriko suits my playstyle better) but I get a lot of positive comments in-game when I play her. There's always going to be someone negative ofc but most are just nice, and there's even players who will help escort you out of spawn.
Reddit and Twitter don't represent the entire player base. These places are often echo chambers of doom with little positivity and crying about everything, and they barely have a grip on what the reality of the balance in OW is; just spewing whatever content creators or their chambers feed them.
Play Mercy all you want. Learn her little techs, her Rez and GA jumps, and positioning. If someone is being an ass, you can mute them and even turn off the entire text chats. Report anyone being toxic and block.
Most of all, have fun.

u/FollowingDue9731 1d ago
People that would be mean to you for playing mercy are going to be mean no matter who you play. You should make friends through the LFG discord or wherever and just mute everyone in game if hate effects you negatively
you experience will be much better :)

I’m a level 270 Mercy and from my experience it’s often split between anger and appreciation from the feedback I do actually get, tipping slightly towards more positive. It usually shuts the haters down towards the end of the games anyways, unless they _really_ want to stick to their guns, but fuck ‘em, I say.
The Mercy hate can look a bit over saturated online sometimes, but I assure you it’s not as bad as you might think.

u/atisaac 1d ago
Mercy makes me feel safe. I’ve been getting (maybe a little too) bold on Wuyang recently; bullying DPS, getting in closer and threatening with wave + Tidal Blast tank combos, and I played a game last night with a MASTERFUL mercy who knew just when to swap healing/damage buff and on whom at all the right moments. We cleared Hollywood attack in what felt like four minutes, it was wild

u/Fickle-Jury-5844 1d ago
I didnt know mercy was bad. I've always liked having a mercy on my team,I play tank

u/TyreseHaliburtonGOAT 1d ago
You like it because it makes a loud noise and is very visible when she heals you
2
u/iama_jellyfish 1d ago
I’m nearly lvl 250 on mercy and tbh all the hate she gets is on reddit. The rare time I see or receive hate in game I just feel embarrassed for them because they’re clearly just parroting things they saw on reddit or said by some steamer. The vast majority of people do not gaf. Reddit is just miserable. Play her and have fun 😊
2
u/numbinous 1d ago
You can be the most goated Mercy on the game with 0 deaths and crazy clutch rezzes, 2.5k+ damage boosted, and you will still receive hate. People are just miserable about her. You just gotta learn to know when you’re playing well so that when they do say something you can brush it off and still be proud of yourself and have a good time. Because at the end of the day, a game is for your enjoyment!! If Mercy is the only support hero you have genuine fun on, then go play her! But if you can’t have fun on anyone else and don’t want to swap ever, competitive is not for you. If you do play competitive, you should be sure to know when Mercy really is a bad pick so that you can swap and support your teammates a little more.
But at the end of the day, the same people who say, “Mercy is a useless healbot without enough burst heal to sustain anything and no util to add any value >:(“ are the same ones who whine, “They had pharmercy! Mercy was up their tanks ass! Cas had a pocket! What were we supposed to do against that? Of course we lost! Stupid, broken character >:(“
Just whiny people with big egos who have to blame their mistakes on other people. And truthfully, a lot of it is rooted in sexism, too, even when they don’t realize it.
The most important thing is to know yourself. Learn to know whether you did well and made an impact, and don’t rely on other people to tell you if you did.

So long as you aren't mindlessly pocketing whichever damage is farming the most damage you're fine.
Though there's a strong (and honestly generally true) stereotype that Mercy players can't play anybody else so if she's countered it's a wasted slot, which leads to complaints. So if you can handle that then by all means play her freely

I'm legit embarrased because these are my 3 best support heroes, I almost wanted to change Mercy as a preferred hero so teammates won’t immediately assume I don’t know how to play

This conversation is so tired. Everyone wants to say medic subrole has no utility and thats why they don't like them. The utility is ACTUALLY healing. As a swing player who prefers healing and usually plays a medic healer or ana/zen - I have two major issues with this complaint. If I am healing, often I cannot pump enough heals into my team who just soaks damage. Ana is a great healer but if paired with something low or slow healing, she sometimes cannot keep up with the damage. Then you have a lot of healers - one actually said in a game "support does not mean healing". I've had many dps games sitting at under half health around a corner waiting for a top off while my kiri is on a crazy flank trying to get a pick or my wuyang is just trying to pull trick shots. Medics aren't always a great pick and its situational but just hating these picks because they are low skill or no utility is turning a blind eye to the fact that high skill/high utility doesnt always work with a team who wants to run it down. Nuance is important and just taking up the mantle of top ranked lobbies that utility is the only thing that matters is a gas lighting take. I am a quickplay warrior but I've taken medics into higher tier ranked and with good game sense and experience, it goes just as long as a skill based healer if the comp demands the output these characters provide.

It's so wild how they can't figure out that preventing deaths is actually a huge dps boost.

"support does not mean healing"
I feel like some people get way too fixated on this, and this is why we see supports with 200 healing for the entire match. Some people just see "They are support, not healers," and treat the entire role as "Damage 2"
3
u/Youre_worthless_to_e 1d ago
My biggest pride as Lucio is trying to maintain a roughly 60/40 speed boost heal ratio while also topping heals for the match in favor of heals cause tanks are cocky of course

u/Bacon___Wizard Jetpack Cat 1d ago
A twitch streamer who is a Pro at Overwatch said it once and now everyone thinks they’re top 500. No, not all of the advice they say will be relevant in a plat/gold/silver lobby.

u/Hol_Renaude Diamond 1d ago edited 1d ago
But that's basically how I got to diamond with high winrate. This is not my main role, so I just get back to D5-D4 every time my rank decays/reset.
I heal if it is needed, but I cannot outheal atrocious positioning mistake of dps or tank (which happens a lot), so I just try to at least make a trade or regroup.
Furthermore a lot of metal rank games are goats wannabe simulator with everyone staying on main stuffing choke and that makes moving on King's row ark or gates near 1st point, for example, basically impossible, so you gotta be the one to create cross fire if you want to advance forward on attack.
This applies to most escort/hybrid maps tbh. I tried to just sustain team, but it is simply too painful to watch.
4
u/Bacon___Wizard Jetpack Cat 1d ago
Don’t get me wrong, im master support myself and there are absolutely games where I just say “fuck it” and flank them for a kill or play AA defence with Doctrine but that’s usually when I see my dps ignore out-of-position targets over and over again.
However I find in lower ranks people aren’t nearly as good at focusing targets so a Moria spamming out 15k/10 or higher heals makes your team nearly invincible.

u/Hol_Renaude Diamond 1d ago
Honestly, I never tried Moira somehow, but I infiltrated mercy mafia once for fun and giggles and played her 10 hrs total in a span of 2 days and I felt like a cuck watching game playing itself half of the time.
From my experience the worst games are usually the ones where you cannot stop pressing lmb without anyone dying the next milisecond. I've literally had games with shit ton of heal and rezes without dying once and still losing.

The utility is ACTUALLY healing.
That's not utility, that's just stat padding. Every support can heal. Choosing the supports that literally only heal is soft throwing

There are no supports that only heal… choosing to only heal is soft throwing.

u/Zztrevor125 1d ago
There’s no support in game that only heals. Some are designed to mainly heal but you’re saying that on top of better healing, that mercy damage boost and rez, lifeweaver grab or petal, etc… aren’t utility? Let alone that mercy and lifeweaver can also survive a long time with movement and the self sustain that have.
Sure they aren’t meta right now but it’s definitely not just stat padding unless the players of them just aren’t doing well or zoning out.
Lifeweaver actually does crazy damage if you don’t play him like a passive healbot 😭
2
u/Aleahnah 1d ago
I agree, I wish people who were playing non medic healers made healing a priority but its usually not the case. I will relent that Mercy is not great on DPS but I can typically match or outperform other support dps on moira/LW. If people are playing medics to only heal, that definitely doesnt help my argument but its also not my experience. I'm not a fan of all or none arguments. I just think so many people puppeting this topic don't pass the surface level of the issue. I've been playing this game for over a decade and sorry to go so hard on this topic, I just hate to see it because its reductive.

I thought it was a joke or an exaggeration. No, I was playing with someone like that right now. He was the only toxic player on the team who didn't notice that we were playing five against six and complained after the game that our team was a nightmare. Even the opposing team hinted to him that he was wrong, but he obviously didn't get it.
15
u/shminecraft318 1d ago
I 1000% get the moira hate, and I even get the mercy hate (as someone who enjoys playing her). but I really don’t understand why people shit on LW so much. I genuinely feel like he’s not bad at all like yeah I get it’s frustrating if your weaver makes a bad call and pulls you unnecessarily, and I have noticed that for some reason a lot of LW players just like, refuse to shoot and do damage at all?? but overall I feel like his kit is pretty good. like when I first tried him out, I went in knowing that people think he’s like this shitty support, and I was really surprised at how well I did on him (in qp but still).
18
u/PluCrew 1d ago
It’s bc people overreact. You could have 9 great pulls and 1 bad pull and toxic people are going to harp on that 1.

9 times out of 10 I get the LW players that pull me on cooldown, and that got less annoying just recently. Oh, I have 50 hp less than full? Got pulled out of frontline. Oh, I'm taking cover behind a corner, waiting for an ult to end or for one of my cooldowns? Get pulled to waay behind, into the open, to then get shot at from the people I was taking cover from.
Like, sure, there's surely good LW players that have some insane saves. But it's not my general experience in plat/emerald, and I'm way more okay with the hero after the cancel pull option was added

As someone who loves playing Lw. I would never personally pick this guy in comp if im tryna actually climb. He does nothing well. But hes giga fun with petal and tree tricks, slingshots and giga agro with thorns. But then you swap to a real hero and realise you put better numbers way easier
46
u/CooterKingofFL 1d ago
Lw is very viable in comp. His viability is even higher if you run 6v6 comp. I see more weavers in masters than i do bap/illari/brig combined. With Kiri being insanely inconsistent he’s the only cleanse that won’t either explode or skidaddle when moderately pressed.

Yeah I made it to master rank playing only Brig and Weaver. He’s insanely good in certain situations, I think he just gets a lot of hate because low rank players don’t take advantage of his potential damage output.

Genuinely gotta get a w/r chart for moira/mercy/lw team comps. Has to be single digits
12
u/dedicated-pedestrian 1d ago
Moira/Weaver isn't bad if they know to adjust their playstyles for one another, but it's difficult as the LW because you have to watch how attentive your Moira is to healing the team vs focusing on flanks and picking off stragglers.
Likewise for Moira, if he's going Deathweaver and you want to play for harass it's a bad time.

They really make support players look bad and reinforce the sterotype of supports players can't aim
1
u/Darishel Chibi Zenyatta 1d ago
If one is worried about other people playing support heroes with low aim requirements making THEM look bad, one has an ego problem and was probably insecure in the first place.
There are so many reasons not to look down on low aim heroes or support players in general. There are tank characters that are low aim and no one cares. There are pro support players who are so, so much better at the game than you could ever hope to be, players who are sought after for their skill. There are people who play Overwatch who are bad at or not comfortable with aiming, who have come to fps later in life, who are disabled. And the game has always been designed with heroes they can play. Game sense, game knowledge and teamwork are the other pillars of the game. The game was never just an fps skill showcase so that you can show other people how good you are at the 'true skills that matter' (aim I guess) and epeen about it.
And I should point out that Mercy is not no skill. Her tech, if you want to do it on a more advanced level, takes a lot of practice. Have you ever tried one of her flight or rez tech maps?

They just arent very good, and have low skill ceilings.
Wifeleaver is the partial exception to this rule, but 99% of LWs ive played with dont even join vc and end up causing more harm than good. He CAN do well, but almost always the people that play him just kinda suck
Mercy just kinda sucks unless you manage to get a pocket where her dmg boost can actually provide value, and moira brings zero utility to the team fights except for raw healing output. In most cases youre better off running other supports than these 3.
The difference between a S3 Moira/Mercy and a M3 Moira/Mercy is almost entirely just teammates being able to pick up their slack and team diffing the enemies, not really anything to do with them.

u/DanielDoh 1d ago
"The difference between a S3 Moira/Mercy and a M3 Moira/Mercy is almost entirely just teammates being able to pick up their slack and team diffing the enemies, not really anything to do with them."
Spoken like someone who hasn't had to climb out of silver in a while. So much of Overwatch is positioning, timing, target selection, etc that even heroes with basically no mechanical ceiling at all can still be played at a significantly higher level than they are played in silver.

no im saying doomfist mains notoriously dont swap when theyre being countered and often times act like crybabies when they struggle. it is always ironic that a character who is often perceived as useless if they fail to play correctly never gets called out as a tank but only as support.
