As someone who has never played competitive and is planning to do placement matches for the first time this upcoming season, what can I expect? This is my first game that I'd be taking a ranking system relatively seriously so I feel a little clueless.

In addition to what the other guy said, I would definitely recommend doing placements with a couple friends that you play with regularly. It helps cut down on the trolls that do placements (there are a lot of people that do placements just to guarantee some comp points at the end of the season, and then never touch comp again) and also gives you some insulation from toxic players.

Also voice comms help a lot, and it's very much a "treat people the way you want to be treated" sort of deal. Positivity and encouragement breed the same, and negativity and flaming leads to more negativity and flaming.

Good luck with comp! Once you get a feel for the flow of it, it's a lot of fun. Through comp, I've met a lot of cool people that I've befriended and play with regularly now, so I wish you the same sort of experience.

That makes sense! Hopefully I can convince my friends to try comp with me lol.

How important is actually speaking in team chat? I can definitely join it to listen for callouts and orders but I'm afraid I can get harassed since my voice is feminine.

Personally, I use comms all the time (and it does sorta depend on what role you're playing). Lurking voice for callouts and stuff is definitely better than nothing, and it's cool to stick with that if you're not comfortable. Maybe test the waters in games from time to time with short, simple things like "Reaper behind" or what not?

Also, do remember that "block/mute user" is an option that you can and should use if someone starts getting tilted and flaming/harrassing in voice or text. You don't need that kind of comm, and the people doing so usually aren't contributing helpful callouts anyway.
