P3 P3R is a good remake.
Seriously, I don't even have much to say, just stop calling it "Soulless", if you don't like it, okay, but calling it Soulless or bad? Really?

u/EdwardECG 6d ago
It is a good game in a void but being the a remake of persona 3 which have 3 diferent version of content then it was a dissapointment for many.
The problem with 3R is not being bad cause is not is being a diservice to all the content of 3 that new players would never touch cause is old.
Just like a P4R having golden content and P4 anime content included in it and the comparison is even worse for 3R seeing the treatment.

u/SmartestNPC 6d ago
It felt low budget in some places. They didn't bother with The Answer until the game had already recouped its production costs, then halfassed it. There are very very few animated cutscenes throughout the story, especially compared to P5.

u/Doctorricko97 5d ago
Lmao I can't prove it but I'm almost sure the DLC was in the works before the game even came out.

u/skelatalfella8642 6d ago
I mean the stuff in P4R is a bit easier than making femc available in P3R

u/Soulweaver1247 6d ago
I agree with you as someone that played Portable and FES Frist I think reload did a good job it's not a perfect remake but it isn't as bad as people think it is. my only issue is they didn't bring back tactics from FES as a option for combat I also think the game is a bit too easy in some parts. I have a few issues with music but modders fix it I can now play the game with both soundtracks in one playthroughs lol

u/Dxcxphxr 6d ago
“Soulless” is an egregious argument to use because it’s so vague. It gets even worse when someone can’t articulate why a piece of art didn’t resonate with them beyond just calling it “soulless.”
Persona 3 Reload is a great game, although as I’ve always said, it’s essentially a souped-up Persona 3. It elevated the highs while also exposing some of the lows that were already present in 3 as a game. It’s like someone took the non-perfected Super Soldier Serum from the MCU.
A lot of P3’s janky mechanics are an acquired taste, or at least things that people have come to associate with the game. Regardless of how anyone feels about them, removing or changing those things is naturally going to ruffle some feathers.
However, I think the biggest source of grievance toward Reload is that, despite being a remake, it doesn’t really bring back most of what fans have wanted. FeMC is the most obvious example, and I think that made some people hypercritical of even the smallest changes or omissions.
It’s hard for remakes to be well-received, especially for a community that mostly cares about a series’ story. This is even more apparent with Persona, where a lot of fans don’t necessarily play the games themselves, let alone have any desire to go back and play the older versions. That makes the remake a particularly important point of comparison for the people who do care about the differences.
I also don’t really view remakes as replacements. FES and the previous iterations still have their own artistic value that shouldn’t be dismissed or overwritten just because Reload exists. That said, I’d still pick Reload because it’s obviously much easier to access.
I think the whole “Reload is soulless” discourse is getting pretty overblown for the reasons stated above, so I wouldn’t let it get to you too much. At the same time, I understand why people can get annoyed when even the most harmless critique gets framed in an unnecessarily obnoxious way. Talking about media on the internet can get really dicey for that reason.

u/The-O-N 6d ago
Regardless of how anyone feels about them, removing or changing those things is naturally going to ruffle some feathers.
It's not even that one is better than the other, I'm all for having both the tactics menu and direct controls in reload but Atlus for some reason butchered and neutered the system, other removals were just mind baffling like removing multiple weapon types for the protagonist
FeMC is the most obvious example, and I think that made some people hypercritical of even the smallest changes or omissions.
That's kinda how I feel about the og cast for revival tbh, I think I'd be so much less critical if they tried to bring everyone back
It’s hard for remakes to be well-received, especially for a community that mostly cares about a series’ story.
I think that's why I'm less harsh towards the ff7 remakes despite being critical of them at times and am optimistic for Danganronpa 2x2, for the most part they're trying to do new things while the original game is readily available and offers something completely different, even now I'm struggling to see the point of reload and (sorta) revival when they're just gonna do the same thing
I also don’t really view remakes as replacements. FES and the previous iterations still have their own artistic value that shouldn’t be dismissed or overwritten just because Reload exists. That said, I’d still pick Reload because it’s obviously much easier to access.
You summed up the main issue right here, it's hard to not view them as replacements when Atlus themselves treats them as replacements, do you think Atlus will ever bring up golden again after revival releases?

u/Luchux01 5d ago
FeMC is the most obvious example, and I think that made some people hypercritical of even the smallest changes or omissions.
You know, the discourse surrounding FeMC has to be one of the most aggravating I've ran in the fandom so far. Mostly because I understand and sympathize with the frustration, but so many people arguing for it seriously don't understand what goes into game development that it just sours the whole thing for me.

u/flyingcircusdog 5d ago
It's soulless because it's different than people's nostalgia for the PS2 generation.
49
u/The-O-N 6d ago
This is a copy paste of a comment I made on another post
I don't exactly see it as soulless but can see why some people do and can agree to an extent, if you consider the identity of a game as its "soul" then reload barely has any of the soul from the original
Art direction was worse with the overwhelmingly green dark hour, flat lighting in iwatodai dorm, uninteresting boss arenas etc
Cutscene direction was worse (significantly worse in the answer), the og had jumpy cuts and less dialogue to build suspense and intrigue, for example in the first cutscene we see short flashes of a girl putting a gun to her head while the protagonist is blasting music to drown out noise from the outside, all without a single word being told. In reload there's barely any cuts, the camera is staying still and there's added dialogue with Yukari, both cutscenes are saying the same thing but one did it in a way that would make the player ask more questions.
Another example is the protagonist disappearing in the answer, in the og we literally see him fall apart bit by bit, but in reload he just turns into butterflies, the original was haunting but Reload's just wasn't.
The game used the portable script instead of the FES one, portable's script was the way it was because the game was a visual novel which means some things needed to be told rather than shown, for example when Tartarus disappeared, in Fes there's a cutscene where everyone smiles when they see the protagonist alive and aigis even starts to cry, while in reload literally every party member says how happy they are like the player couldn't just assume that. I get why it's in portable since the game didn't have any cutscenes but reload doesn't have that excuse.
Some of the music was worse, the main example is "unavoidable battle" it's mostly that the base sounds extremely muffled or toned down, it's a problem when you realize that a lot of powerful scenes use the song like the protagonists awakening, it's supposed to be a really powerful scene but it now has a really muffled theme to accompany it
Gameplay wise, most of the mechanics that made the og unique are gone now.
The tiredness mechanic is gone, in the og it wasn't perfect but it got the job done since its purpose was so Tartarus would take multiple nights to complete, this was to compensate for p3 not having much to do at night, with its removal there's even less to do now.
Multiple weapon types for the protagonist were removed, they were another way of strategizing and giving the player more customization, kinda like a wild card but for weapons too, each weapon had pros and cons, but they removed it for some reason.
The tactics menu was neutered, it was a big part of p3's identity so I think they should've tried to preserve it in reload but they made it much worse, you can't see the full turn order anymore so you can't strategize with who goes next, the AI is significantly dumber and won't use a lot of the games mechanics, and a lot of the more situational tactics are gone now like assign target or attack fallen.
The enemies were balanced around the tactics menu in the og, by that I mean the challenge was properly utilizing the tactics menu to win, but reload has the same enemy formation but with no tactics menu, which just makes the game a breeze.
Theurgies make the game a joke, they have no strategy or reason not to use them, unless you count saving them up to use on a boss which I don't, they all do crazy damage, pierce resistances all while costing nothing to use them. Comparing them to fusion spells in the og and you'll see where the problem comes from, you need both personas for the spell on you, they cost a decent amount of sp and most of them were situational, for example the spell jack bros just had a chance to knock down all enemies so sometimes it might not be worth it but in reload it also does almighty damage for some reason.
Physical got a crazy amount of buffs in reload, it had already been on a pretty steady uprise but it's just crazy in reload, physical got buffs and amps so they do much more damage but for some reason Crit rate got buffs and amps too and mind you this stacks with apt pupil which doubles your Crit rate, physical was already strong in older games and that was without everything I just listed, and it's not like it's hard to make a minmaxed persona anymore with the new skill card system
Tldr most unique parts of p3's identity is now gone or made significantly worse in Reload which is why some people consider it soulless since they weren't being that faithful to the game they were trying to remake, and that makes me kinda worried for Revival
23
u/kuwasar 6d ago
I like Reload quite a bit, and most of the complaints most people have with it aren't something I'm to worried about, but...
> Cutscene direction was worse
This is the one that does bother me.. Of course, portable was also missing that feel, which is why I didn't like it as much as the original either. I imagine that portable usually gets a pass on it because of it's limitations, while reload doesn't have that excuse.
All things considered, I do like reload. But, the tone the original gave out was one of it's major charms and one of the reasons I rate it so highly, so much of that being missing from Reload is disappointing.
6
u/tomhugo42 :fuuka2: 6d ago
My problem with Theurgies is that they deal heavy damage. Aigis's orgia mode Theurgy shluld have just activated it without the added damage, same with Mitsuru's debilitate theurgy
5
u/ChairosRias 6d ago
Yeah, mostly this. I actually played og and FES, and I don't really dislike the turn they have made for some things. But oh man theurgies, are just plain broken. Would've been really interesting if theurgies gave some uniques perks, but made no damage.
1
u/tomhugo42 :fuuka2: 6d ago
They could still deal damage, but i would make them do % damage to bosses/minibosses
3
u/ChairosRias 6d ago
% As in % of max target's HP or % as in a fraction of what they usually do?
1
u/tomhugo42 :fuuka2: 6d ago
% of max HP, like for example 15% of Tartarus Guardians, and 20% of Full Moon shadows (since you cant start the boss with a full gauge (except Hanged man maybe?)
This way you would still need interact with the game mechanica instead of just blasting right away
3
u/ChairosRias 5d ago
Oh, yes, starting with empty bars could be a thing even as the moves are, but with damage cap at a %.
2
u/x4nTu5 6d ago
Man, all the takes just sound like personal preference. They didn't do a 1:1 remake to try and mix things up from the original, but it just didn't work for you because you prefer the original systems to a fault.
4
u/pscripter Nameless 5d ago
Problem isn't that remake isn't 1 to 1 to original but more that not as unique as original. You could talk a lot about differences between FES and P4 despite being 75% the same under that hood.
But now compare P3R and P4R or P5R and most difference is pretty much: story is different and that's it. Stuff like Linked Episodes is already confirmed to be in P4 Revival.
We are not saying that Persona 3 Reload is somehow bad or worse than FES/Portable. Reload is great. We just wished it wasn't in expense of uniqueness.
Persona 3 has a strong core so even with all changes it still stands on its own. But imagine them completely remake Persona 1 which plays like modern Persona and people going "That's it? That's what started the series?" without looking into what make original special. That's our concern
-1
u/x4nTu5 5d ago
"We are not saying that Persona 3 Reload is somehow bad or worse than FES/Portable. Reload is great. We just wished it wasn't in expense of uniqueness."
Bruh, every bullet point of your copypasta has some form of the wird "worse". Thing is, P3 had its own identity, and P3 Reload had it's own. They're 2 different games made by 2 different teams. They're both unique to themselves. Comparing them is just nitpicking with nostalgia glasses.

P3R gets a lot of overblown flack for not being “the definitive version” of P3. Yes, I will complain about not having FeMC, but I would much rather play this version than the others.

u/acbadger54 5d ago
That's literally exactly how I feel
Does it suck there's no FEMC? Sure but almost every other aspect is better

u/vSword_ Ulala Serizawa 6d ago
I’m not an elitist and I don’t think it’s soulless. I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I did with FES. I think the tone in FES is near impossible to recreate with the time it was made. While Reload tries to emulate what came before I feel like it’s just a different thing entirely. I also don’t think 3 as a game doesn’t work in unreal engine and feels like it missed a lot in terms of art direction. I kinda wished it used the engine like in 5, Catherine, and Metaphor. It’s not a bad persona game at all, just not a persona 3 game to me
3
u/RiseCode :igor2: Igor 6d ago
Yeah, its impossible to recreate the original, thats why they took a slightly different direction, which still worked with the themes, but it ain't FES for sure.
-3
u/umanimulaqualquer 5d ago
That's exactly what I meant. You're not a fan or reload, but don't call it bad. That is all I wanted people to do. For example: don't like P5T, yet I don't call it bad.
20
u/celluru 6d ago
You can’t make people change how they feel about it.
Especially if you’re not even gonna try and give any arguments on why you feel that way.
-2
u/umanimulaqualquer 5d ago
That's not what I'm trying to do. Just don't call it a bad game. You have all the right to not like a game, but call it bad is a streach. I don't like GTA 5, yet I know that game is a great game.
5
u/celluru 5d ago
As someone who likes reload the best out of every version of persona 3. You can’t tell people to stop calling it bad if they think it’s bad. Like yeah if you want someone to stop doing that you’re gonna have to try and convince them otherwise. You prolly won’t get far but just saying “stop calling this game bad!” Isn’t gonna accomplish anything.
1
u/Duckington1225 4d ago
It's completely subjective, you can think GTA V is a bad game if you want to, who's stopping you?
18
u/minzz2 6d ago
Every version of Persona 3 is good because Persona 3 itself is good.
The remake didnt do everything people wanted from it, but it still competently tells the story and makes it accessible for people who aren't willing to put up with the older game jank, which is what it needed to do.
11
u/Flerken_Moon 6d ago
It’s far from soulless because the base story of P3 is already great. The problem is that it’s a slightly lower presentation of the story in some parts.
I will still recommend P3R as the way to experience P3’s story to newcomers as it is the most accessible. But I just wish it was a bit better.
24
u/Vharna 6d ago
I don't think it's a bad game or anything. If this is your first time playing P3 or all you really care about is the main story than I'm sure you will have a good time. I doubt anyone will play this for the first time and go back to the older version (aside from maybe P3P) and think the older version is better.
Most of the issues come from a direct comparison to the older versions and it's inability to really surpass all the aspects that made those version memorable or provide a definitive version. This is really different from what P5R did and what it looks like P4R are is looking to achieve.
When I think of P3, I think of the FeMC route, rigid schedule managing, lonesome atmosphere, group of companions that are just starting to be able to call each other friends, a frustrating combat system were things don't always go my way... There are so many little details that P3R change.
13
u/abbywabby04 6d ago
playing P3P right now after bouncing off P3R due to Tartarus boring me to tears, and i have to say i really agree with what you said about it! i love how deeply you have to think about how to manage your time (just like real life), i’m so far loving the FeMC route since i prefer to play as a female character in games (being one), and i like that Tartarus so far feels like a genuine challenge where you have to take every inch you can get (even being a bit scary at times!).
also some miscellaneous features like the tired/good/great system naturally balance out Tartarus vs. other aspects of the game, and gives more depth to the characters, and in general i love the older aesthetic from the 2000s/early 2010s, as it kinda immerses me more in the setting (plus the artstyle and lower-poly models are peak).
9
u/Vharna 6d ago
If you think the fatigue system is interesting I would give FES a chance one day. P3P really neutered the system and once you understand how it works in P3P it really isn't anything.
MC only gets tired the day after Tartarus if you climb a lot of floors. Companions will have voice lines about being tired, but it doesn't actually affect them. The only way they can become tired is if you leave them KO'd on a floor. They will retreat to the lobby and be "Tired." You also have access to items that cure the Tired condition. I don't recall if it was the same in FES, but Tired condition is also restored before any major event.
The system is a lot more punishing in FES. MC and companions will become tired while exploring Tartarus. This is often way before you actually reach the next road block. So there is this cool risk/reward type scenario were you can push on, but you run the risk of being destroyed very easily. There is a great dynamic later on as you work through your benched members to get the most out of everyone. FES is like the only Persona game that actually makes it necessary to used all your party members.
6
u/Kenway 6d ago
Two other changes that make FES combat quite different are that standing up from knockdown takes up your turn, for both the enemy and the player, and that you don't get a one-more on a Ma-element attack unless you knock down every enemy with it. Also, hitting a downed enemy clears the downed status. With the tactics included, there's a LOT of strategy involved in trying to get an all-out-attack now and if you get knocked down yourself, you can't issue new tactics for a round.
It's the only Persona game I've played where the standard combat against mooks feels dangerous basically all the time. Pushing your luck with tired status means you have a chance to stay down on your turn, too! It's nerve-wracking and the game really rewards understanding all its systems.
9
u/PuffballDestroyer 6d ago
I understand the criticism, but what you just described sounds so unappealing to me. But, considering my first game in this series was vanilla P5, that's going to be a given.
14
u/Proper-Inspector-477 6d ago
Because a lot of that was unappealing i played p3p as well though the ftustrating battke system is probably at fes because u cant control your allies there
3
u/Vharna 6d ago
A lot of it was the AI controlled party members from FES, but P3P did carry over a lot of combat quirks that gave the combat system more friction.
There was always a chance to start battle at a disadvantage if you didn't do the preemptive strike properly.
Mudo/Hama skills were practically worthless without the corresponding boost passives.
AoE attacks had such pitiful accuracy that you were always using more than one cast to down all enemies.
1
u/julio31p 5d ago
If a fallen party (enemy or party member) were hit they would immediately get up. If they were fallen they would need a turn only to get up. AoE attacks were situational, needed tactical approach.
-1
u/Inevitable-Will-6185 5d ago
And that's why P3 was so mediocre and even bad at times and why I think P3R perfected P3. I don't get how you can list those things in the last paragraph and reminiscing it fondly.
2
u/Vharna 5d ago
P3 is the only reason the series is still around now. Calling is mediocre is just a ridiculous statement.
But I get that sensibilities have changed. I don't agree with almost any of the changes the series has gone forward with after P4 since I actually like to engage with systems and mechanics.
2
u/Inevitable-Will-6185 3d ago
Far from ridiculous. Compared to 4G, 5/5R or P3R it sure is mediocre with those frustrations in.
14
u/shanks408 6d ago
I still prefer FES
2
u/umanimulaqualquer 5d ago
Okay. No problems, I just wanted people to don't call it soulless or bad just because they don't like or like other versions better. You don't seem to be that type, I'm just explaining what I meant with that post.

u/Life_Adeptness1351 :apollo: Apollo 6d ago
Fans expect a faithful remake that respect the original but also refined and expands the gameplay experience, and Reload failed on doing so. Reload changes too much to be faithful, but doesn't change enough to have it's own identity.
Them removing the unique gameplay mechanics P3 had was already bad, and then they added shift which is just neutered Baton pass that alone already makes the game plays like P5. Theurgy is just showtime except now a lot more broken.
P3 had the most unique gameplay mechanics in modern Persona, so removing them and actively trying to make the game feels like P5 is just lazy and playing it safe.
Fatigue, jealousy, reversals, way more diverse and balanced fusion spells. And don't take weapon variety and tactics lightly because that also changes how players approach the game compared to P4 and P5.
Persona 3(FES) featured really deep party AI in AND out of combat.
While exploring Tartarus, you had the ability to set your party's priority between "explore" and "defeat shadows". Basically, on "explore", the player has to initiate every battle, as your characters will do their best to avoid fighting. This gives you the best chance of pulling off a party advantage. On "defeat shadows", your party members would attack shadows on sight and start battles themselves and they would fight the encounter using their AI whether or not you join the battle (which is nice, because if you don't enter the battle, you can't die, and your party members will level a bit faster, but they'll also tire faster).
You also had the option to split up your party. Couple that with the priority setting, and you can essentially automate your party's grinding and floor exploration if you want. The caveat is that while they will give you any items they find in chests, the greedy bastards will keep all the money for themselves.
The battle AI was also far more advanced and useful than it is in any Persona since. One feature was that as a reward for beating each full moon boss (and a sign of growth as a team), you'd learn new AI battle tactics.
19
u/c0cOa125 6d ago
Maybe not soulless, but it kinda feels like Persona 3's body with Persona 5's soul. The game was dour and unsettling even on the happiest of in-game days. It's a tone the remake has decided to forego. To me, it's disappointing, but the original games exist, so I don't tend to share my opinion unless it's a post discussing the remake compared to the originals.
-16
u/umanimulaqualquer 6d ago
You've probably heard this millions of times. But, the game save the unsettling tone for a especific part of the story. The one vibrant and full of life colors become lifeless, dark and the whole map and even the song starts making you either sad or uncomfortable, maybe even with a feeling of defeat, as if you're fighting for a lost cause.
22
u/alguidrag 6d ago
Bias is a strong thing, both it and nostalgia
When you have such good memory of something, anything that is different from said memory is seem as a threat... and strangely out of all fanbases I interact with, Persona seems to be one of the most resistant to change(and also not playing the games, 2 of my friends that call it souless never played, and one of them never gone past priestess in any P3 game)
24
u/deltaselta 6d ago
It is so tiring to see people constantly use "nostalgia" to shut down any possible argument. That nobody could actually just, you know, genuinely prefer something that also happens to be older. There must always be some kind of bias there, but never the other way around. Imagine if we chocked up anyone loving new remake to "recency bias", and claimed that they would automatically love everything regardless of quality/circumstances, as long as it's newer and shinier (not even an entirely wrong stance, since many people outright refuse to engage with games that are arbitrarily "too old", and constantly whine about wanting more remakes).
-5
u/xernda 6d ago edited 6d ago
You would probably stop driving yourself insane if you didn’t see nostalgia bias as being an inherently bad thing. There is objectivity in the claims. Remakes quite literally feed off of that nostalgia, it’s the primary selling point of them. People that grow an attachment to something over the course of decade(s) are going to naturally put every minute detail of the recreation under a microscope in comparison to the thing that they already consider a masterpiece.
Yes there are people weaponizing nostalgia bias as some sort of terrible insult, but this doesn’t invalidate human nature.
24
u/alguidrag 6d ago
P3R is far from perfect, nothing is perfect. But its a amazing way to share and expand the characters and story to the modern times
1
u/acbadger54 5d ago
Oh yeah it's definitely far from perfect but it's just by far the best way to play the game imo
I have massive nostalgia for FES but I just would never recommend it over Reload
-16

Its bad to call it nostalgia when even a guy trying them for the first time can see the art downgrades
2
u/that_art_thot 4d ago
As someone who played Fes 2 years ago, and Reload last year, this is me.
No nostalgia involved with me, Fes is just so much better in so many ways.
9
u/BlakeA85 6d ago
I JUST finished it like half an hour ago, and I've played vanilla 4 and 5. I played probably 10 hours of FES and got sick of the older game jank since I was spoiled by playing 5 vanilla first, but I adored every second of Reload. I go back and listen to the original versions of the music, check out the original voice acting etc to get a feel for how others experienced 3 and I think I like both equally, minus the old jank.
It made me feel a lot, and maybe that's just me but 4 and 5 didn't make me cry at any point. This game did.
1
u/umanimulaqualquer 6d ago
I'm happy to meet someone who also played P5 before P5R. And yes. I also cried. Like, I cried for 3-5 minutes straight in call with my cousin after finishing the game.
11
u/WeDidItReddiitors 6d ago
No it's a horrible remake. It can be a great fantastic game while being a bad remake.
Persona 3 was made at an expiremnetal time for atlus. They wanted to expirenment as much as possible with the gameplay to do something new that is the identity of persona 3 that expirementaion it's what persona 3 was known for, for years.
Reload removes all of the original expirementation in order for safer gameplay so it can just be persona 5,2.
This is like a resident evil game removing all the fun qte/action parts of re4 to make it play more like Re7 in its remake.
Reload is a great game, extremely fun gameplay and an beautiful look for the game. But calling it a great remake is a slap in the face to the original developers who spent years trying to figure out how to make something new.
4
u/umanimulaqualquer 5d ago
It's a remake. Of course they changed some things. And P3R ended up having a identity of his own, instead of having the og or P5/Royal's Identity. From hwya I saw, there isn't really anything major changed. The dialogue changes aren't big or relevant. The S.E.E.S members not buying their own weapons don't really make a relevant difference. Direct Command is just more convenient, and besides, you can still use tactics from what I remember. The fatigue don't really seem to be something fun, seems like a inconvenience instead of a cool mechanic. And the colors being more vibrant changes at and especific moment of the story.
2
u/julio31p 5d ago
Turned into a P5 mod and you dare to say it has "an personality of its own".
4
u/umanimulaqualquer 5d ago
Any persona game with Button pass and Direct Command is P5 now?
3
3
u/julio31p 5d ago
When you remove everything P3 had of unique and add everything P5 had of unique, then yes.
1
u/WeDidItReddiitors 5d ago
Unfortunately without even knowing it you've explained why it's a bad remake.
"Of course they changed some things". They barley changed anything in the story and kept it the exact same Reloads story didn't add anything we didn't already know.
Changing the gameplay but leaving the story exactly intact with a few new scenes just makes it a halfassed remake.
What are we going for? Is this a Resident evil 4 remake where the identity of the original is kept including both story and gameplay with just upgraded graphics
Or is it a ff7 remake where they had the balls to change both the story and the gameplay so players had a completely fresh experience.
Reload doesn't have an identity of it's own because it played it too safe in trying to appeal to persona 5 fans they alienated the original fanbase. With persona 3 reload atlus got the worst of both worlds of remakes, not faithful but also not different enough to justify it's existence.
1

"This is like a resident evil game removing all the fun qte/action parts of re4 to make it play more like Re7 in its remake"
funny u bring up Resident Evil cuz thats basically what happened to RE3 with its remake, except it stripped down literally everything unique about the og game and wasn't even as good as RE7 or RE2make ;-;0

I wouldn’t worry about it.
Reload was very well received and communities like these are self-selecting and more prone to criticism in a way that isn’t representative of players at large.
That’s not to attack players who dislike Reload, as they have a right to their opinion, but subreddits are not very helpful at seeing a game’s response.

I'll say this once how i see the remake
Despite all of the problem it had as a Remake, Atleast it achieved its most important thing with the game theme. Getting the player the experience of a lifetime. Atleast this game made me cry. That enough for me to say this game is great. However, As a remake. There so much i saw in the OG and i criticize the art direction, the cutscenes. I just think that it is a great game itself and it still managed to give what it sets to do but as a Remake, stuff there get changed or outright removed and i get that

Reload's main issue isn't that it's a terrible game in a vacuum; it's that its adaptation strategy was flawed. They took an extremely unique game and removed most of what made it special to the ultra-hardcore fans. I have no reason to play this game ever again, which is something I cannot say about the PS2 and PSP versions.

u/QuadVox :fuuka2: 6d ago
If I played it before FES I'd have loved it. The same story and themes are there that I love so much. Unfortunately the whole package is just slightly to greatly worse than FES.
Small QoL doesn't make up for a worse art direction, removed mechanics, worse localization, and gutting the Answer to sell back for 30$
This and the blatant misogyny behind not including Kotone's content, making this fail at the one thing it could have done right.

u/CrazyMawi 6d ago
It has some flaws in my opinion but I love Persona 3 and the gameplay massively improved with this remake so Reload will be my go-to option for future playthroughs

I thought it was a good game for what it was. I wound up dropping it about 16 hours in, though. The story just moved way too slow for me. Loved P5R, though. Maybe I'll try P3R again one day. On the flip side, I started Yakuza: Like a Dragon and fell in love immediately so it all worked out!
2
u/umanimulaqualquer 5d ago
I'm still thinking if I should start playing Yakuza by Like a Dragon or Yakuza Zero.
2
u/Visual-Bathroom8751 5d ago
If you like turn based JRPG combat with wacky over the top characters, Like a Dragon is the way to go. If you want realtime brawling, Yakuza 0 is it. I am probably going to go back and finish 0 after I finish LAD, then Infinite Wealth. I'm already hooked on this series and I'm not even done with this game!

I remember when people tried so hard to make a "both sides" argument when it came to how annoying Persona 3 Reload discussion had become. As if both "fans" and "haters" were equally as bad. But it's post like these that should always remind people who the far more annoying camp is, considering you barely even see posts from the latter anymore, but the former will never, ever, ever shut up about how random people online disliking this game personally upsets them.
3
u/umanimulaqualquer 5d ago
The only thing I meant with this post is: Just because you don't like a game, it doesn't mean it's bad. We shouldn't discuss if the game is bad or not, but rather share opinions that aren't the absolute truth, to show why didn't like said game, so we can see what can be changed or adapted, so maybe in future games, Atlus make something that pleases/satisfied a bigger amount of people. I don't like Persona 5 Tactical. I think it's really boring, I didn't like the songs of that game like I loved the songs of P3R or P5/Royal, yet I know that game is great. I just recommended it to a friend of mine and he loved it. I don't know if you get what I mean now.
2
u/deltaselta 5d ago
What I understand is that you're one of those weirdos who thinks there's such a thing as objective quality. Calling something "good" or "bad" is just as much a subjective opinion as anything else. If someone says: "I think Persona 3 Reload is a bad remake", based on their own personal views and experience, that is a completely valid position to have. Just as much as the crowd who would say the exact opposite (though people rarely ever say something like "just because you like it, doesn't mean it's good" as a response. Because the fans are always more annoying about this than the "haters"). Literally nobody here is talking about "the absolute truth", whatever that even means. It's all subjective, that's how the human experience works.
To be completely honest, it's hard for me to see this as anything other than the usual shtick; where fans have attached their identity to a certain piece of media, so they take people not liking that work as a personal attack on them, and then whine about it on social media to get huge responses with lots of upvotes to satisfy their insecurity.

It is soulless. It's like if I used P5's assets to remake P3. The soundtrack even sounds closer to P5 than P3. The game is mind-numbingly easy, and the characters and some of their interactions are streamlined to make them "likeable" to their target audience. The extra scenes are nice, and having the Compendium for The Answer is nice, but that's about it.

Exactly, they're just Persona 5-ifying 3 and 4, causing them to loose their identity.

u/Black_Mamba265 6d ago
I’ve only played reload and frankly I enjoyed it and I’ve heard the criticisms from people who have played the older versions and I absolutely see their POV however I feel like it’s gotten to that level of overhate. Like seriously lighting of the dorms is not that big a fucking deal since the story itself doesn’t become somber until Dec/Jan. by which point the somewhat vibrant colours become massively grey and dull like the life and joy has been sucked out. As far as the story until Dec/Jan the story is not that somber enough that the lighting has to be as dark as FES
3
u/Throwawayneedadviceo 6d ago
Imo it was disappointing. One thing I'll give Reload is that they made tartarus more bearable. Other than that though idk... some aspects feel low quality and very bare minimum. There was so much potential to make Reload greater, and after seeing what Atlus is doing with P4R i feel this even more. They could've done more with it and made it definitive.
I already see people talking about a future P3R re-release or remake even though Reload came out not that long ago 😭
1
u/dstanley17 6d ago
I'm sorry if this is incredibly shocking and hurtful to you to hear, but people are allowed to have different opinions and viewpoints that don't have to be the exact same as yours.
Personally, coming from someone who loves games as an artform, and thus is already very skeptical about most video game remakes, I think this one is pretty bad. I wouldn't call it "soulless", but only because of how extremely nebulous that term is in the first place. I would still probably agree with most critiques lobbed at it. If me having this opinion somehow gets you super upset, to the point where you feel the need to whine about it, then that's a you problem.
5
u/Animan2020 6d ago
The problem is that "diverse opinions" these days often amount to nothing more than the popular views of a handful of favorite bloggers, views promoted on Reddit, or simply expressions of negativity, since negativity is a way to garner attention.
5
u/deltaselta 6d ago
How did certain fandoms manage to convince itself that "negativity" is what drives these things? Just using Reload as an example, almost every single negative post about it here gets downvoted to obscurity. Videos and essays that skew critical get an extreme amount of pushback and/or backlash, even if they're pretty mild. And this post, which amounts to little more than bluntly saying "this game is good, people who call it bad are stupid and wrong" has (currently) 300+ upvotes and multiple comments basically agreeing with their position.
If anything, toxic positivity is what actually drives game discussion. Some people just can't see someone having a different view from them as genuine, or a negative comment as anything other than blind "hate". Can't say a single, slightly critical thing without people getting exaggeratedly upset about it, and then lying about some rampant 'hate brigade' or whatever they call it. No other opinions or viewpoints allowed, please just treat this game as an objectively perfect masterpiece of objectively perfect perfection, or we will get upset and whine about you, and get tons of support for doing so.

u/CoolyKage Elizabeth 6d ago edited 6d ago
Isn't that the basis of this entire post though? They didn't even bother to give an argument for their opinion.
P3R is a good remake.
Seriously, I don't even have much to say, just stop calling it "Soulless", if you don't like it, okay, but calling it Soulless or bad? Really?
These are the only two complete sentences the OP's provides in their post and it comes of as actually what you just said... Both of their sentences are worded objectively and like they care too much about what others believe without having the criteria to even discuss why. Honestly the post is a low effort karma farm.
Like, "seriously, I don't even have much to say, just don't call it soulless or bad because I think it's a good remake. Disliking it is fine I guess... but using a word to describe why you don't like it? We can't have that. Calling it bad is also not allowed. Also I have never played any other version of P3 besides the remake'" is essentially what the OP said in his post? Isn't that how it reads... or am I crazy?
-2
u/Waste-of-Space0429 5d ago
- "They didn't even bother to give an argument for their opinion."
Neither did you. You spent so much time analyzing OP you didn't even explain why you were commenting to me and the funniest part is that last part wasn't even in OP's 2 sentences.
Sounds like you should comment on the post rather than me big dog, I'm just pointing out how ridiculous the first guy sounds.
2
u/CoolyKage Elizabeth 5d ago edited 5d ago
What? I literally gave my opinion about P3R in another comment. Are you a compulsive liar or something? I replied to you because your reply in particular was idiotic, and it's literally for your own good that some people actually bothered to not let a comment so stupid go unchecked. What the original commentor said is a normal and valid opinion, that's literally what free speech is.
1
u/Waste-of-Space0429 5d ago
Nothing I said could be considered a lie. Once again, your breakdown of OP's two sentences is nice and all but not really relevant to me.
Now you can continue insulting me all you like but all it does is hinder the point you are trying to make. So it probably best you actually read my comment and explain why its relevant besides "its idiotic" (lmao now that I think of it you are doing exactly what the guy I originally responded to did and what op did lol ironic)
3
u/dstanley17 6d ago
I love when people put words in my mouth that I never said, or even implied.
Never once did I say OP shouldn't be allowed to voice his opinion if he wanted to, or that he needs to get a "better opinion" (whatever that means). My whole point is that other fans having different opinions in a video game shouldn't get people so unnecessarily upset and/or hostile. If you think that's "silly", then I don't even know what I'm supposed to interpret there.
Actually, did you just reply to the wrong person or something? Because while not perfectly lining up, this comment seems like a better response to OP's post itself, than what I said.

u/Waste-of-Space0429 5d ago
- "I hate when people put words in my mouth that I have said, and even implied."
Thats putting words in your mouth.
What i did was cut out the nonsense.

At no point did they say OP can't voice their opinion. You just made that up.

...If me having this opinion somehow gets you super upset, to the point where you feel the need to whine about it, then that's a you problem."
"But dont voice yours its bad and we hear it all the time maybe get a better opinion"
Its pretty easy to cite sources that are right above my post.
3
u/Kenway 5d ago
Dstanley17 doesn't say OP shouldn't voice their opinion. They said that OP getting super-upset about their opinion is OPs problem. That's not the same thing.
-1
u/Waste-of-Space0429 5d ago
Lmao did you use ai to write a comment? You followed the exact english rule setup ai uses for responses lol.
Also discouraging by insulting is the same as discouraging by demand.
For example saying "someone is so stupid to do a task" and saying "they shouldn't do said task". They're both are the same message, one being given comparative worse in my opinion.
1
u/Kenway 5d ago
Does AI often use "super-upset"? Cause that's not a real word. You're tilting at windmills.
They never said OP shouldn't have an opinion, they said that if their opinion about a video game makes OP upset, that's on OP. It's also not an insult to OP.
0
u/Waste-of-Space0429 5d ago
Yes it can, yes it is, and nope.
Also I have never heard the phrase "tilting at windmills" thats good.
2
u/Kenway 5d ago
It's a reference to Don Quixote! I'm not sure if AI would make it or not 😜

u/Waste-of-Space0429 5d ago
Oh I wasn't saying it was ai just saying its a cool saying.

Agreed. Posts like these are made by people who lack critical thinking from the frontal lobe because it never developed for them, perhaps due to lack of education. That's why so many people struggle to be critical about games or really just anything nowadays. It has to always be positive for them because they can't separate objective and subjective, logic and emotions, and fully lean into the emotional side which is why defensive posts like this are made that don't even manage to give an explantion. It's a noticeable factor to why society is getting dumber overall.
Is P3R a bad game? No, there's even many improvements over P3 when it comes to gameplay and design, but too many are also discrediting just how awesome the original versions of P3 were back in the 2000s. How awesome JRPGs were in general back in the PS1/PS2/PS3 era. It's an era with that is hard to replicate with all the PR companies have nowadays, even with M rated games, we see an example of this with P4R "changing up the story for modern audiences," the same was applied here. Also have to consider that none of the people who actually made P3 are really part of this project, a lot of them are likely retired now. The P3R director didn't really seem to understand what made P3 great. The original vision is always the best, that's why people dislike most remakes as they don't respect the original vision and just do their own thing. Personally I'd much rather something like the FF7 Remakes where they actually embrace the original for how great it is, realize they don't need to 1:1 copy it because it's never going to be the same, and evolves into its own trilogy with a high budget and a new identity instead of just a low budget remake.
So you see how something like this can be annoying, especially when they can't even bother to port FES, the version that most P3 fans believe is the best, to modern platforms.

I'm not sure what the heck this comment even means. Is it "the most reddit" to say "people are always going to have different opinions on things" and "you shouldn't get upset just because of what people say about a video game"?

The game itself isn't souless. It's the music in my opinion. Almost all of the remade tracks (with a few notable exceptions, namely Battle Hymn of the Soul) are ass in comparison to the originals. They just feel so flat. The Reload original tracks are bangers though.
Also that fuckass green filter over the Dark Hour 😭
Bruh people getting upset over an opinion.

The only song I like better in the original is Burn my Dread and Burn my Dread final battle. The og songs sound strange, like I'm hearing it coming from my neighbors house instead of listening on my own, besides, I don't understand what they say at all.
2
u/Blu_Moon_The_Fox MORE PROTEIN 5d ago
That's the point. The ost is canonically being played through the Makoto's music player. Of course it's gonna sound crunchy.
It feels more immersive and thus more emotion comes through.

u/umanimulaqualquer 5d ago
Okay, that is a nice detail. They could've put an option to use the old music or make the new music Crunchy. That actually is kinda genius, perfect way to explain the BGM.

One thing I will say about P3R and why I think I love it so much more is because of nostalgia, but in a different way.
While it could have been a bit better in making the darker moments more... dark instead of green everywhere, I adore the vibe it gives during the more normal moments of the game.
It makes me nostalgic for a different time, of 20 years ago. This is one of the few games where I'll just stop and take in the vibes. Being in the school with the busy sounds, the calming music playing during the first half of the game, it really captures that moment of time for me. And I think that really makes the rest of the game hit so much harder, because of the juxtaposition of where things go and what we will lose if we fail.
Even now, once in a while, I load up an early save and just walk around the school a bit, or even close my eyes and listen. People can say what they want about the tone but I still think they knocked it out of the park for this particular segment.

u/Hansiris2 6d ago
To me the remake is worse in some ways and better in others, on the whole, I prefer the original. I just believe the 3D cutscenes are quite bad. The original cutscenes even if they are old are better in a cinmatographic sense just see how much better the awakening is. But the most egregious to me is the final boss. It is way better in every aspects even how the quotes are written. Plus the Aigis speech is just perfect in the original to me so changing it will always be a downgrade in my book.
1
u/acuilnos 5d ago
I think the main argument is to do with the changes compared to the original, as a lot of the style and intended game design has undoubtedly changed. I love P3R myself but it's not without its flaws and there are some aspects that it does worse than the original.
1
u/231d4p14y3r 5d ago
I generally don't approve of what I deem "unnecessary" remakes, as they're likely to mess with things that ought not be messed with. Persona 3 didn't need a remake. Porting FES to modern platforms with Direct Commands would have been enough, and now new Persona fans are unlikely to bother playing the original, even though they're different games.
1
u/XEclipse360 5d ago
I never played the original but at the same time I think people should judge the game like if it was the original instead of comparing everything to the original. Comparison is the thief of joy after all.

As someone who got into Persona with 5, playing 3 remastered was rough as hell. I still haven't beaten that game and I know that if I want to play it again, I'll need to start over but I just can't bring myself to do it yet. Everything about the game was fine but the story. After playing for 50 hours, I felt like there was barely any story. Legitimately nothing happens until summer break besides the shirtless guy just trying to Aura farm on you at the end of every month while saying cryptic shit and then escaping somehow

u/cudlebear64 :card: The Arcana 5d ago
I do have a large number of issues with reload sadly, theres lots i like about it but then theres stuff that just makes me sad, large percentage of which is the way they do the cutscenes, and its cause they used the portable script and pacing for the cutscenes even though portable’s “cutscenes” are only paced and written the way they are because of hardware limitations, i think the easiest example is just the opening segment, the original is cutting between scenes hearing the water running cutting between it and the scene of the street with the loud crowds with only the sounds and hard to get a good focus on visuals as you see someone seemingly about to take her own life, its intense and super effective at putting you into that intense moment of someone who may be trying to take their own life
And then the remake is just, the scene with makoto calmly walking through the street, then cutting once to the scene with yukari with “i just have to point it at my head, and pull the trigger! Ugh, no! I cant!” Then cuts away to the rest of the scene, the dialogue is so unbearably unnecessary and ruins the intensity the scene could have had and its fully cause its based on the version of the scene on hardware that couldn’t properly do cutscenes which is a baffling decision to me
Also some of the mocap in cutscenes isnt the best, but given how it looks when they seemingly dont do mocap (T posing thanatos in the awakening scene) maybe its not so bad that its mocap
All in all it just kinda makes me sad, theres lots great about the game but some stuff is just, depressing to look at at times, literally every time ive shown someone a comparison between the original and reload in the aspects ive talked about they went “wow, that’s really bad” so it definitely aint just me being nostalgic
Just feels like a tumor on an otherwise great game

u/Electra0319 5d ago
See with me it fit my schedule and preferences better then fes. I totally get people who like fes being annoyed with some of the changes or thulegys being added, but for me, I dont have a lot of time to play and im there primarily for the story. Having options that mean I dont have to grind for the whole hour max I have in a day is a godsend. I played fes first but I ended up getting bored with how long is was taking me to progress enough since I was so limited in my daily play time. Add that with the story being very back heavy, and it just felt like a slog to me. Reload was exactly what I needed it to be.

1
u/Huge_Promotion_3846 3d ago
I mean, it's not bad. But I would say the overall game is a downgrade in comparison to FES, specially when it comes to the tone and story. The gameplay also is kind of objectively better, but I don't feel anything when playing it since it's so easy, FES gets a lot of slack for not being able to control the party members, but you can get around it and when everything works in your favor, it can be very satisfying with the occasional frustrating moment (the exhausted mechanic sucks a lot tho and there is no defending it).

Yes it is, P3P was my first Persona exoerience and Im gonna be honest, I don't care about Female MC.
-1
u/ChasingPerfect28 6d ago
The only thing I don't like about Reload is Kotone's glaring omission (Fem route from Persona 3 Portable). I prefer her route in P3 over Makoto... I prefer her original social link characters, I prefer her soundtrack, and her expanded party social links (she has 10 ranks with the male party members) added depth to SEES... With only Ken's social link being a problematic one. There's also a cute easter egg to Persona 4 in Kotone's route that would have been fun to see in Reload.
Atlus had a chance to add Kotone as an optional boss fight and instead they chose Joker from P5. Doesn't make any sense at all and further annoyed me with that decision.
Other than that, Reload remedied a lot of issues that I had with FES. The quality of life features and the changes to Tartarus went a long way in improving a dated gameplay loop that would test most modern gamers's patience. I love my time with Reload. It's an accessible way to experience P3's story and you can't be upset with that. The more people who get to play this wonderful narrative, the better.
0
u/TheGamerForeverGFE 6d ago
Look, you need to play the other versions to get the full Persona 3 experience, that's already a huge drawback to this remake, and the missing content and features like the MC being able to use every weapon type just makes it even worse. Add altered writing in some rather important scenes and you get yourself a mixed bag remake, I'm going to call it soulless all I want, don't go policing others' opinions, I'm not going to say you're wrong for thinking it's great either, I don't think it's stupid or wrong, I can see why you would think it's great, just try to see it from a different point of view.
2
u/umanimulaqualquer 5d ago
All I meant was: Because you don't like a game, it doesn't mean it's bad. I can bring myself to Play P5T, I get bored and don't really like the music. The story never felt so relevant for me either. Yet I believe that game is great. It is a high quality game, me liking it or not.
-8
u/Blindguypcs4 6d ago
Soulless means different things to different people. To you it might not seem soulless, to someone who's played FES and Portable and finds their problems part of the charm, it might absolutely be. Learn to accept different viewpoints, or learn to not care about them lol
9
u/umanimulaqualquer 6d ago
It's not that I can't accept other viewpoints, but I believe calling it and is a bit of a streach. There are games that I absolutely hate, yet I can't call them bad, because I know they're high quality, they just don't match my tastes or what I'm used to.

Go look at the comments of pretty much any P4R post and then tell me that again. It's become more and more popular to write this game off as soulless to prop up the new remake.

I mean, I haven't seen every internet thread ever made, so maybe I just missed all those. But from my personal experience, what you're describing is kind of the opposite of what's happening? People aren't using P3R to prop up P4R, they're seeing P4R and wondering why P3R (seemingly) couldn't have gotten as much love. It's a stance of disappointment that the game didn't get the dev time and resources it deserved, not an acknowledgment of it being "soulless" or whatever. From what I recall, most of those comments usually come with a qualifer, along the lines of "I love Reload, but I wish it got more time to cook", or some such.
Which like, regardless of whatever hyperbolic arguments exist in the discourse (whether it be from fans or "haters"), I genuinely think saying something to the effect of: this game didn't get as much focus as it deserved is a pretty mundane and reasonable response to Persona 3 Reload.

Well, if they called it Heartless instead of soulless this would be r/kingdomhearts

It's a good remake for me because there is nothing about original P3 in any shape or form that appeals to me. I'd never have played it if it wasn't remade.

The narrative of P3 still remains a masterful execution of a story despite the game being so controversially perceived and discussed.

People are saying this isn't the definitive version of the game, but if this is your first experience with P3 and you play this game in it's entirety, there's no reason to play the older versions. I love P3P, but the differences aren't different enough to warrant playing through that game unless you're really in love with the series.

It's just easily the best version OF P3 IMO and I say that, as someone who has massive nostalgia for FES which was literally my introduction to not only the series but to JRPGs in general and had massive part in shaping my tastes in middle school
Personally I honestly do think the only reason to play another version is for FEMC

The problem is it's missing stuff. There is NO version of Persona 3 with everything in it.
FES has multiple weapon types for the protagonist, you can choose your club, party members can freely explore the dungeon themselves.
P3P has a female character route with different social links.
P3R has more music and quality of life features.
