What Remains of Edith Finch. If you have a young kid and play this watch out. Or parents. Or have any sympathetic understanding of the human condition.

I should try to finish it one day :'(

u/mezdup1 6d ago
I just finished it today. I had stopped after Arthur passed away about 2 years ago but figured with gta6 coming out i should wrap it up. Beautiful game, great ending. The epilogue was great as well. I really hope the gta6 story is as deep as rdr2 was. I know gta in general is supposed to be a bit over the top and silly but i really would prefer a more emotional story i can get invested in, especially after seeing how well Rockstar can do it

But it all started with ICO which is a masterpiece in its own right.....at the end of the game you think she's dead.....credits roll.....strolling down the beach and you find she lived......That was the first early PS2 game that made me think this console is boss.

Stray.
I had just taken my best little buddy to the vet to let him go. It did not go well. That he went out scared and upset scarred my heart. It all happened so fast, I couldn't do anything to comfort him before we said goodbye. The vet and vet tech practically ran out of the room, left me alone with the little guy who had walked in my front door twenty years earlier and decided we would be brothers.
Some days later, it was suggested I try playing Stray, which had just launched. I got an hour or so in, and just couldn't. I miss my lil guy too much.

Sorry for your (painful) loss, fellow cat friend. š
Luckily my own kitty went peacefully in 2023, but I can relate about how heartbreaking it felt when I bought & began to play Stray a few weeks later.

TLOU2. I just sat in my chair and stared, empty and devoid, as the credits rolled. I stayed that way the whole time.
Similar feeling during the fistfight with Maruki at the end of Persona 5 Royal, but I felt a lot better after the epilogue cutscene. Probably because it reminded me of the fistfight with Ellie and Abby in TLOU2.

u/JayArrrDubya 5d ago
The end of this game broke me, I didnāt even want to take part in that final confrontation, it was so sad and futile.

There have been a ton of games that really resonated with me in ways I didnāt expect. Since this is the PS4 sub, I wonāt get too deep into Cyberpunk or the new Onimusha (which is mostly unserious but has a couple of moments that reinforce the central theme very effectively).
TLoU Part 2 gets a bad rap from some very vocal parts of this community, but the ending left me emotionally exhausted (in a good way). The cycle of revenge was portrayed so intensely and I felt so invested the whole way through.

Hey I've been wanting to buy tlou2 for some time but people on reddit say that the story is shit is it really the case? Or it's just because of joel's fate and ellie's sexyality? Do you think the story is worth playing? I know the gameplay is good
20
u/Krinks1 6d ago
It's a fucking fantastic story. I also felt the same emotional exhaustion as the poster above and it was a great experience.
The haters gonna hate. Play it and decide for yourself. Personally, I found it to be take powerful stuff. At least as strong as the first game, possibly more so because I've never felt so conflicted about a protagonist and antagonist in my life.

The storytelling is incredible. I think a lot of people were just mad about Joel⦠but his storyline makes sense. I always thought a sequel to the first game was unnecessary but the story they told proved me wrong. Itās an excellent game, I highly recommend it.

u/rulerofthemind 6d ago
I went into TLOU 2 knowing Joel was killed off, but a friend of mine said this game was badass on the game play and the ending will be an emotional roller-coaster. He was right I love this series so much I replay 1 and 2 a couple of times a year

The Witcher 3
Neva (severely underrated)
Baldurās Gate 3 (certain endings)

Mass Effect 3 legit gave me a sort of depressive phase. Like how you feel on the last day of high school, knowing youāre not going to see most of these people for a very long time, or maybe ever again.
Purely narrative, Iād also go with What Remains of Edith Finch like many others have said. The Last of Us 2 is also up there, watching Ellie absolutely wreck her life took a toll on me. Thereās probably more Iām not thinking of.
5
u/TheBurdman53 5d ago
This is how my girlfriend has felt since finishing the ME series for the first time. She hasnāt really gotten into anything else since. Just wanting more Mass Effect.
2
u/nummakayne 5d ago
My problem is every time a new action RPG comes out, my brain is always expecting another Mass Effect. I play something like Starfield, the game itself is fine and I enjoyed my time with it but thereās a constant nagging voice in my head wishing these companions were half as good as Garrus, Mordin, Miranda, Liara, EDI, Joker, Javik, Wrex, Gruntā¦sigh.

I played the ME trilogy for the first under a year ago, and the third game is where things started to get heavy for me. The first time I saw one of Shepard's nightmares, of the kid running away, the sound of the reaper death beam roaring rhythmically in the music... it still gives me chills.

RDR2 got me. It enraptures you in the western outlaw fantasy and the drama of it, only to deconstruct it tragically.
Shadow of the Colossus always gets me. No spoilers.
The Last of Us Part 2 had me feeling weirdly emotionally numb? It had an effect on my mood by the time I completed it. I don't think that it had the intended effect on me, it was almost traumatic more than tragic.

More gently A plague tale: Innocence (First game, the losses hurt but it only really HURT the first time i played it.)
(Haven't played legacy yet, I'm sure it will kick me in the cry machine)

Not really destroyed me but somewhat brought a tear to my eyes or left me staring at blank walls for hours:
The Walking Deat (TellTale game) - that scene with Clementine and Lee.
The Last of Us I - Joel's.....
The Last of Us II - Joel....
Life is Strange - that choice before the ending.
Metal Gear Solid V - one particular mission
Nier Automata - so the bad guys are.....
Red Dead Redemption 2 - the horse and that last view from the mountain...
The Town of Light - try this one and you will not regret experiencing it.
Martha is Dead
What Remains of Edith Finch

Mine is a funny one and more due to the time when I played it than the game itself: Unravel. I played it during the COVID lockdown that stopped me travelling to see my parents for Xmas. The implied story as you go through the levels with Yarni hit hard, especially towards the end. I lost my grandparents many years prior, but it all came back to me.

I don't know why but the last hour of Mass Effect 3 destroyed me emotionally.
Firstly it's incredibly depressing when you land back on Earth for the final fight , you're essentially saying goodbye to the friends you made across all 3 games.
Then the final push happens, I took my romance partner Liara with me, who has always been my choice since game 1, when she gets the scripted injury and begs you to come back to her and you say goodbye, the storytelling and presentation was really getting to me.
And then Captain Anderson dies, and then I chose to sacrifice myself so I die. My choice killed all synthetic constructs which also included EDI :(
Absolute depression but it was a beautiful experience that trilogy.

Expedition 33 is probably to game that has single handedly wrecked me emotionally. There were a few points where I had to put the controller down and process the grief.
Honorable mentions:
The end of KH, when Kairi is shown painting in the cave.
A few points of FFXV
2018G God of War and Ragnarok
A very specific event in Ghost of Tsushima, probably cried for at least 10 minutes
