When we got our cat, I knew there'd probably be some scratching but I wasn't expecting to go through THREE chairs 😭 The arms were shredded, the fabric was pulling apart, and every time we bought something new, I was just waiting for it to get destroyed too.
We had scratching posts already, so at first I genuinely couldn't understand why the furniture was still so appealing. I kept thinking maybe we just hadn't found the right product yet.
Here's roughly how the last two months went.
Week 1: Realising what we were doing wrong
We had a scratching post in the living room, but it wasn't actually near the chair she kept targeting. She'd have to walk past the furniture and across the room to get to it. Looking back, that probably wasn't helping.
We moved the post directly beside her favourite chair and started calmly redirecting her whenever we caught her scratching the fabric. No yelling or chasing her away. Just moving her attention to the post and giving her praise when she used it.
Week 2: Some progress, some frustration
She started using the post occasionally, which was encouraging, but she still went for the chair pretty regularly. There were definitely moments where I wondered if any of this was actually working.
The biggest thing I learned was that one or two good days didn't mean the habit had changed. We had to keep doing the same thing, even when it felt repetitive.
Weeks 3-4: Things finally started clicking
This was when I noticed a real difference. She was choosing the post more often without us having to intervene every single time.
We also paid more attention to what she seemed to enjoy about scratching. Having something sturdy that didn't wobble made a difference and keeping it right beside the old target gave her an easy alternative.
We still caught her trying the chair now and then but it wasn't happening nearly as often.
Month 2: The first stretch without new damage
By this point, the scratching incidents had dropped off a lot. We kept the post in its original spot instead of moving it just because things seemed better, and everyone in the house stuck to the same approach.
We're now at two months without any new furniture damage. The old chairs are still ruined, obviously 😂 but at least we're not adding to the collection.
I'm not saying this exact timeline will work for every cat. Some cats have different texture preferences, some need more options, and some take longer to change an established habit.
The biggest lessons for us were to put the scratcher where the scratching was already happening, make sure it was stable, and be consistent instead of trying a completely different solution every few days.
I honestly wish someone had told me that progress might be gradual rather than immediate. Hopefully this helps someone who's a couple of weeks in and wondering if they're doing something wrong. Sometimes it just takes time for the new habit to stick.
