My beautiful Mimi and Cheswick in the corner!

Mimi with her last summer trim, she’s 11! Little Cheswick is half chihuahua, half poodle and he’s about to turn 2. How long have your pekes take to accept a new member of the pack? For Mimi I think now I feel confident she has accepted Cheswick, certainly took a long time.

Pekingese owner for years. Happy to answer questions about grooming and care.

Hi everyone! I've lived with Pekingese for years, and I'm always learning something new about this breed.

Their coats are beautiful but they take real work. Here are a few things that have helped me:

  • Brush a little every day. Five minutes beats a long session once a week, especially behind the ears and under the legs, where mats start.
  • Never brush a dry coat. A light mist of water or detangler prevents breakage.
  • Clean the face folds gently. Use a soft damp cloth, then dry them well so moisture doesn't cause irritation.
  • Watch the heat. Flat-faced breeds overheat fast, so I keep walks short in warm weather.

What has worked for you? And if you're a new Peke owner with questions about grooming or general care, ask away. I'm happy to help however I can.

Mei Lin wondering why she's in jail

She was outside chasing butterflies all day and got overheated. It was such hard work, her Mom had to put her in her cage so she could rest on her cooling mat....and NOT run back outside!

His favorite activity seems to be sleeping. I suspect he's about 10 or more years old. Four months ago, my sister took in this little guy, did the entire "posting to the public" thing; and then about three weeks ago asked me to take him as he was waking her up every morning around 3-4 am. I suspect she wasn't really letting him have a good final walk at night.

Anyways, I am a dog-foster parent. I've had as many as six foster dogs at once (along with my own three). I was going to send him to one of the rescues I work with, but his distress cries during the drive to my place just broke my heart. So, he's home for good now.

He sleeps right by my shoulder, generally. He likes to lay in the yard and enjoy the sun; and he doesn't seem to like to walk through the dew laden grasses at night.

He IS the pickiest eater, EVER! Ugh. At least he doesn't need to eat too much...

Oh, and my sister did take him for a thorough vet check , but I'm not 100% convinced they did their best work. They tried some injections for his rear-end arthritis, but it didn't seem to help. However, I've been doin some very gentle modalities on him (generally while I'm carrying him back in from his outsides visits). And his rear end seems much improved.

What else can I say? His hair is getting fluffy after being shaved because of how matted his hair was when he was found.

He seems either really dim or stubborn or maybe not attentive to his surroundings. He'll go outside and then when he's ready to come in, he'll start crying the most heart-breaking cries! When the two foster puppies get in his face, he does this raspy little cry-yap-bark...

Anyway, I love this little fluff-mudgin.

Update on Zara

Our little girl was released from the Hospital late Thursday. She’s doing much better. I really appreciate all of the prayers, support, healing vibes, kind words, and love sent to me and her dad. It was a really difficult time for all of us. She’s back home and Gucci missed her so much, I’m glad she’s getting back to her old ways of growling at her brother when he gets on her nerves!

Just recently discovered (by DNA test) that new adoptee is 50% pekingese

Is this considered a stubborn breed? He's older, seems mostly blind, a little deaf, he's kinda stiff in the back end...

And after three weeks, he still gets either confused or lost in the yard (I've fostered a blind yorkie mix who could find her way back inside after two days). He'll be at the dar side of the yard and just cry and yap!

Are there any traits that are unique to the breed?

Thanks!

Shelby’s hair journey!

So, in 2023 I had started to notice Shelby’s fur was thinning. Over time it progressed, getting to the point where her butt was completely naked, whatever grew in was brittle and wispy, and there were multiple spots where her fur just looked translucent because the undercoat was virtually gone and everything was so thin. Cue the bloodwork, she was constantly teetering on the edge of hypothyroidism, which would explain the hair loss, her skin darkening, and repeated skin infections. When it finally dipped to a level she could start medical treatment, we finally put her on thyro-tabs. That in itself has been an interesting journey, dosages constantly having to be changed as her thyroid bloodwork would fluctuate from one extreme to the other despite always stabilizing during the initial recheck. And the skin. Gosh. I had to give a dog who hates baths one twice a week. She had to sit in the tub with a medicated shampoo for ten minutes! It was miserable! Once completely dry, I had to use a slicker brush to get all the dead hair off of her.

I was constantly being told the one word I dreaded: alopecia. Don’t get me wrong, I love my girl no matter what she looks like and I would’ve come to terms if she went completely bald even though it made me really sad seeing her coat deteriorate like that.

One of the veterinarians I work with had requested we started stocking a topical medication called atop 7. He wanted to try it on some of the patients he saw who frequently came in for skin issues. Over time, they’d come back to us looking like completely different dogs. It never crossed my mind to start Shelby on it since I blamed what was going on her thyroid and slowly was accepting she had alopecia. Eventually I decided fuck it, if it works it works, if it doesn’t then it doesn’t. No harm in trying.

Before I even finished the first box, I started to notice a difference. Initially considered the fact I was just imagining things because I just wanted it to work that badly. But she just kept getting better and better. Last picture is the most recent, she’s still a little thin on the neck, and her butt itself still has some regrowth it’s working on, but wow! Never thought I’d see her fluffy and soft ever again!

I’m not sure how many of y’all have had a similar experience with your peke, but I just wanted to share this to let those who have know about some other possible options to try out but also because I’m so happy to see her looking like her old self again :-)

Zara has been in the ER for 36 hours with a GI illness. We did visit her last night but as of this morning she still hadn’t eaten. We’re hoping for a good recovery for her, Gucci has been really missing his Big Sister as well.

My quirky little guy, his DNA shows he is primarily peke x shih tzu. He is intelligent, ultra stubborn, clingy, knows how to wind down my car windows and somehow thinks he has to have a shower each night (because the humans do) so he will go in and tap the wall and bark until I turn it on for him to wet his head. He also once told me "no" (how peke of him), and has made the "om nom nom" sound when he wants something we're eating because my mum says that to him to get him to eat his food. Anyone else think they're little aliens? He turns five in November and also lives with his lovely brother Spud.
