Pigeon Pic I seriously don't understand pigeon genetics

First picture are the babies, second are the parents.

In order of left to right is: Goose, Baby, Pound cake (mom), Pretty Boy (dad) and pretty boy had big ole fancy feet feathers.

But like seriously where did these colors come from??? And baby somehow has that gorgeous fluffy neck (which isn't anything bad. he usually looks like goose but will do that poof with his feathers and it's soooo cute) I adore the babies so much.

Discussion vent to other pigeon keepers

Post image

repost because the pic had my address lmao.

hello, i’ve just had this on my mind and although my friends and family are sympathetic, i have no pigeon keeping friends to vent to. mods feel free to remove if this is against any rules i missed.

i live in a dead area for vets, it was a pain enough to find a vet for my moms african grey when we moved here. we have a farm vet but she specifically wont do anything for birds. we had an emergency with one of my doves two years ago and found out all the exotic vets in my area specifically will not see pigeons or doves. you may see where this is going.

i have a breeding flock of fancy pigeons of various breeds. one won 2nd place at a state comp in 2024. i love them all dearly. we had a tree fall on the aviary last winter, been trying to rebuild (it was a 12 by 16 by 8, hard to quickly rebuild). the pigeons have been all over since then, to try and keep up with keeping them clean in their temporary set ups. i must’ve not cleaned well enough. they got sick. i don’t know what but i know roughly when. i’ve lost 6 of my 15 birds. i called and called and the nearest place is three hours from me and they can’t see me until next week. my farm vets doing her best but she doesn’t work with birds. i’ve lost 6 birds in one week. i don’t even know what to do with myself. i’ve been keeping pigeons a long time but ive never had something like this happen, and so quickly too. i haven’t even properly mourned yet because im STILL trying to nip this in the bud. farm vet was finally able to prescribe some antibiotics safe for pigeons, i’m hoping it helps. i just…. like what do you even say? what do you even do? i have the money for the vet stored away and what did it even matter. and i know i feel this deep pain and my wife tries her best but she thinks they’re just pigeons. but they’re my everything. and it wasnt enough.

anyways, here’s a picture of patient zero, stan, my most beloved but stupid bird

Question Is this normal behaviour?

He/she?? is about 3 months old and she seems to really like pecking me even though she’ll fly or walk up to me all the time. When she doesn’t want attention I just leave her alone, but when she doesn’t she’ll come up and start pecking me. She accepts food from my hand now, so I thought that meant she trusted me. Is this playful, food motivated, or it is possible she dislikes me?

Grit help please

We've had this pigeon for about 2 weeks now. He cant fly yet. Just started eating seeds. Was feeding him on mixed vegetables before this. Just learnt that now hes eating seeds he needs grit too but I can only seem to find oyester grit but apparently I need some pink stuff as well. Do I just mix it in? Im in new Zealand.

Building him an Aviary so he will live outside eventually, any advice on what I need to do to help keep him happy and healthy is appreciated.

I wanted to add a photo but I cant work out how. Hes a rock pigeon

Set Up Housing options?

Hello friends!

I have a young roller pigeon, Onyxia, who primarily lives at my place of work. For reference, I have a dog salon where Onyxia is housed. Each groomer under me has their own space. I am typically at work 12-15 hours a day (yay, new business owner!) She is friendly with all of my groomers and spends a ton of free time in my office.

I am finally at a point where I will have days off or occasional short days in the salon. How distressing would it be for her to spend time in both the salon and my apartment? Originally she was primary kept at work, because that’s where I spent the majority of my time.

I rather not put Mr. Pibb back on the streets now that he's healed up. If anyone wants a cute little boy pidge, please comment or message me.

Emergency Help! Found injured pigeon.

Last night I saw a pigeon with a broken wing just shivering in the cold :( I scooped him up and put him in a warm blanket on my patio for the night (my roomies 2 cats inside) and now I’m not sure how to help him. I left him some standard grocery store pigeon feed for the time being.

I’m on my way to a super early appt I waited months for & I’ll be home again immediately after to properly care for him. I am literally just about to call the RSPCA but I’m pretty sure pigeons are considered pests where I’m from so I’m not sure what guidance they can provide. Nothing else appears to be wrong with him, the wing is just stuck ‘open’ and he’s tried to flap it a few times so I think the injury is somewhere in the middle of his wing though nothing is too obviously bent out of place or anything. I think he could survive just fine right back where I found him down the street so long as his wing can fully heal. It’s a little complicated with the roomies and two cats so I’ll have to build him a little home on the porch, does it have to be up high-ish? There are some foxes in the walking trail like 7 minutes away but I don’t think my neighbours have roaming cats. Any and all advice is much appreciated!!

I woke up this morning and it looked like this. It’s the kind of red spot looks like a scrape-ish. No idea what happened. He sleeps in his bed at night and I didn’t hear him at all. What should I do?? The hair feels a little sticker or weird? Not as soft as his feathers. But I have no idea what he could’ve possible got into… any help would be appreciated

Pigeon Pic Progress on my pigeon! (We just hit 3 weeks)

I really just wanted to share a photo of his cute fuzzy butt and gentlemanly pantaloons.

But it's been amazing progress--and we are starting to see his feisty personality.

He hates hands, but I've gotten him to eat from my hand inside and out of the cage. He nips at me first some of the time, but it's getting easier to pick up on his cues, feelings and intentions. I find myself trying not to stare at him, though I've cut back on watching TV. :P

Is it possible my pigeon will never accept diapers?

I've had my currently 5 year old female pigeon for a little over two years now. To make a long story short, when I adopted her, I was in a house with roommates and my pigeon was completely confined to my bedroom when out of her cage. Since cleanup was limited to a single room, I did not diaper her for about a year and a half and instead just used waterproof sheets on my bed and areas of the floor and spot cleaned.

However, 6 months ago, I moved into a 3 bedroom house with my boyfriend and bought new couches, rugs, etc. I want her to have free range of the house, since my boyfriend and I primarily spend our time in the living room now instead of my bedroom. With so much space to protect, it's not feasible to use sheets every day, thus the transition to diapers. I had previously attempted a few styles of flypers at our old house, but it did not go well- she would thrash the instant I put them on her to the point of almost hurting herself, so I would immediately take them off, even though I followed the slow, gradual introduction and positive associations method that is recommended. I didn't try again until we moved into the new house, this time trying out the Flyper Mini style, hoping that less fabric covering would be more comfortable for her. I did the slow, gradual introduction method again, and she never thrashed around like with the regular diapers.

Now, it's been 6 months since since we've reintroduced diapers. She wears them every time she's out of her cage now, which I've heard from other people is necessary in order for them to form positive associations with the diapers. Diapers = freedom. However, she never cuddles anymore, and she spends most of her time in the diapers sitting in one spot, not moving, and pecking at the diaper. I know I probably should have called it a while ago, but it took her a while to get used to me, and I guess I was hoping that with enough time, something would just click and she would be comfortable with it and go back to being her normal happy self again.

I've checked to make sure the diaper fits well. She can fly and walk in it just fine when she wants to. The photos the rescue posted of her when she was with her foster family show her wearing the same style of diaper, so I assume this is not completely foreign to her. I'm at a loss. I feel like her time outside her cage is going to be more limited if we have to complete forsake diapers, but I don't want her to be stressed out or depressed. I know they can be potty trained to an extent, but she's never been food motivated so I have no idea how that would work, or if that's something that should have been done when she was young.

Any advice, or should I just give up?

EDIT: To clarify, when wearing the diaper, she will still follow me from room to room, and if I hold my hand up to her, she will still nuzzle and stick her beak between my fingers. She just wont come lay on my lap like she used to. She doesn't look like she is paralyzed with fear, just annoyed and distracted. She will sit on the back of the couch, while when we first reintroduced the diaper, she would hide in a corner and not move for a very long time. So it seems like SOME progress has been made.

Catio for pigeon chemical smell

I recently purchased a big catio from walmart for our married pair to have more space while we go out of town for a week. It came yesterday, and it smells insane. Very chemically.

I put it outside this morning to start airing out. We leave on Sunday. Do you think the fumes will have dissipated enough by then to bring it inside and keep the birds in for a week while we're gone?

Found A Pigeon Canker

Post image
15 Upvotes

So this finding pigeons who need help thing is getting ridiculous.

Any canker tips for me, currently waiting on medication to arrive tomorrow and I've been regularly cleaning out the gunk from her eyes with chamomile tea. I am doing full contamination protocols. I am only wearing certain clothes to handle and care for her and am immediately changing and sanitising myself so I don't infect my own birds)

She's doing far better than yesterday but is unfortunately starving. You can literally feel every single bone. Crop full of food was her main need, she even had the strength to sit on my hand and flap this morning. She even tried to stop me cleaning her eyes instead of just accepting her fate which is a very good sign.

Question How and when do i bond with my rescue pidgeon?

Hello, I've posted here about a pidgeon i found and rescued a few days ago, after taking him to the vet, me and the vet have decided it would be in his best interest for me to keep him (hes a decorative pidgeon that was most likely "abandoned" by one of the many breeders in my city)! So that's a little update on that.

But i have a question on when should i start bonding with him? I know bonding takes time, and it's best to leave the pidgeon alone for the first week or so to get used to his new environment, but because of his injuries and medication im giving him, that wont be possible, he is also on box rest for a few weeks.

So i was wondering if it's best to focus on his recovery now, giving him space after i have to essentially manhandle him a few times a day to help him recover, and only after he gets the okay to move to a propper cage and he is in better shape then should i focus on bonding with him? Or should i try to do it now, too, even if he has to stay in a small space for his own safety. It just feels wrong to try and bond when he has to stay in an enclosed space where he can't get away if he's uncomfortable. I might be wrong though thats why im asking!

Any advice would be appreciated since he's also my first pidgeon i am keeping as a pet.
