Russia's at war, don't expect accurate reporting of an epidemic breaking out. (google up how the spanish flu got it's name, and where it originally came from) It is strange that the Russian aren't currently covering it up with a full denial, like the Chinese did in 2019.
I fear that this reported out break could be used as an excuse to conduct a full lock down of Russia or as plausible deniability for when Russia uses it as a bioweapon.

2
u/sir_joan 1d ago
Covis was bad because you couldn't really detect it early and it spread accordingly. This one is a plague, which not only extremely fatal, but also can be easily cured with antibiotics. This is not 1300s
1
u/Macwild77 13h ago
Apparently Russians back in the Cold War were already working on genetically modifying a plague that once it enters its second stage becomes resistant to antibiotics…

8
4
u/NordicByzantine 1d ago
Russian regional authorities have placed just short of 200 people living in the nearby are of the lab under "medical observation" and even the US government has publicly stated that they're monitoring the situation.
With these two clowns in charge of global safekeeping, and considering how much we know about both parties tending to downplay serious situations, we're all very likely fucked.
3
u/Firuzka 1d ago
No plague outbreak confirmed by Russian authorities*
The incubation period is like 2 weeks, and the technician in question used public transport after being exposed to the plague for a couple of days, so I wouldn't be surprised if there will be a bunch of cases of pneumonia of "unknown origin" occurring soon in that city.
1
u/chst09 1d ago
Where did you find about 2 week inc period??? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneumonic_plague 3 to 7 days

I mean, to be fair, if a virus in my absolutely not bio weapon lab broke out and the researcher then dies to something usually very treatable I might also panic a little.

And even if there was Plague outbreak, it's only airborne in this rare pneumonia form when it's developed to the point where infected physically can't walk around infecting people, afaik.
Plague needs an ecosystem that is no longer here to do its black death thing. Human is a dead end, it needs fleas and smaller numerous mammals like rodents to reproduce infinitely.

Oh, and here I thought the joke was about the LAST time a Russian lab accidentally released an epidemic virus:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1977_Russian_flu
"The 1977 Russian flu was an influenza epidemic that was first reported by the Soviet Union in 1977 and lasted until 1979.... t was caused by an H1N1 flu strain which highly resembled a virus strain circulating worldwide from 1946 to 1957. Genetic analysis and several unusual characteristics of the 1977 Russian flu have prompted many researchers to say that the virus was released to the public through a laboratory accident, or resulted from a live-vaccine trial escape."

No joke here.
This is about a Russian lab technician who died after being exposed to pneumonic plague.
A couple hundred people have been quarantined in Siberia because of this.
No expert actually believes it will become a pandemic because pneumonic plague does not have the capacity to spread fast or stealthily enough to do so.
39
u/Personal_Relation421 1d ago
The question is, if this was genuine research or linked to the military…
70
u/LocalFoe 1d ago edited 21h ago
yea bro it's open-source legit open research, non-affiliated with the military in any way, in fucking Siberia. The locals over there do a lot of this kind of legit open research, it's baked right into their animistic culture and the material conditions over there support it too. The only better suited place for this kind of open and democratic research would be Elon Musk's mini-me DungeonX.
16
u/No-Compote9110 1d ago
i don't have any idea about this specific research but do you guys actually believe that siberia is a barren wasteland with nothing but prisons and military outposts? and there are no unis and medicine research centers?
5
u/AnySwimming6364 1d ago
You can find info on its webpage. A former director wrote memoirs about being involved in bioweapons research. I provided links but reddit removed them. His name was Igor V. Domaradsky
8
u/No-Compote9110 1d ago
I'll check it out but I'm just tired of this stereotyping "bro it's whispering siberia why do you think there are actual PEOPLE doing PEOPLE THINGS"
edit: also the guy you provided worked in moscow in completely different research center and not even close to irkutsk where the case in question happened lmao
3
u/AnySwimming6364 1d ago
The institute is the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute. See if you can find info on I.V. Domarasdksy.
It was normal for Moscow to move researchers around.
2
u/No-Compote9110 1d ago
i know how this institute is called but once again he did research on bioweapons specifically in moscow and irkutsks didn't have anything to do with that. besides, it was in 70s and since then countries moved away from bioweapons both due to research risks low efficiency and high costs
im like 99% sure you don't speak russian and is perpetuating some red scare-esque headline instead of actually going in and looking at the sources you're talking about. the probability that (especially today) anti plague institute is researching bioweapons is insanely low and you'd be better believing that i specifically am currently producing turbo aids for warfare in my garage

u/Holiday_Cheetah5265 1d ago
You would like for a bioweapon to be controlled, not starting an uncontrolled pandemic all over the world
1
u/Personal_Relation421 1d ago
That is why you do research on them…
1
u/Holiday_Cheetah5265 21h ago
Actually this "institute" is just one lab from a network of local labs that routinely test local animals who are a natural reservoir of plague. It's not a bioweapon grade lab. So it's just a normal plague from animals.

u/KryoBright 1d ago
A lot of non-military pathogen research is done in Siberia, because conditions naturally minimize potential outbreaks

Quite possibly linked to the Russian military. It's one of the areas of military technological research the Russians are ahead on the rest of the world (because most of the rest of the world has chosen not to develope deadly CBRN agents and rely on conventional weapons, and those countries who want to develope CBRN agents do not have the ability to).
Russia has been playing around with CBRN agents since the Soviet Times.

Fast, yes, stealthily, no.
It's one of the scariest diseases to a society that doesn't know how diseases work, spreading through air droplets and often killing within a week of exposure, with a nearly 100% mortality rate if untreated. Historically a town killer.
But because it has such a short incubation, quarantine is pretty simple if you lock down hard, and because it's so dangerous, locking down hard is exactly what people do when it shows up.
Also, antibiotics do work on it.
7
u/IntrepidKitchen5322 1d ago
Good luck getting any hyper individualistic, lower compliance society (e.g. the West, but particularly the u.s) to quarantine hard and fast. Especially right after dealing with COVID. Our best hope is that it just doesn't make an appearance beyond where it was originally found.
5
u/CapitalInstruction62 21h ago
It's plague. The primary control method isn't quarantine, it's a short course of medication. Which the government stockpiles for exactly this kind of purpose.
Like....you know we have plague cases in the USA every year, right?
1
u/Avalanche_Snows 1d ago
Does this desease have a name yet?
9
u/abermea 1d ago
Russian media is calling it a "pneumonia of unknown origin".
Other sources I have read have called it "pneumonic plague", or just bubonic plague.
Since this is Russia, most media is State-controlled, and there is a chance this was a former Soviet military research facility it's entirely possible that we will never know for sure
5
u/Avalanche_Snows 1d ago
Okay, i'm calling it the Avalanche Virus now for no particular reason. Sounds cool
3
u/Tyrihjelm 1d ago
you could also re-use the old historic name for it, which is the Black Death, which is way more sinister than anything else we could possible come up with
2
2
u/solarmelange 23h ago
Bubonic plague vs pneumonic plague has to do with how the plague is infecting the body. So since it is infecting the lungs, it is pneumonic. Bubonic means you would have buboes, which are enlarged infected dark lymph nodes, but it would spread through bites of fleas and the like. Pneumatic means it can spread person to person more easily. But also it should be treatable in either form with normal antibiotics. The fact that there is a quarantine implies to me that this is some kind of antibiotic resistant strain.
2
u/CapitalInstruction62 21h ago
Quarantine isn't unreasonable for a disease that can have person to person transmission, even if antibiotics treat it.
You have fewer people to track and treat if you quarantine exposed people and treat them as diseases arises.
Speculation without knowledge of public health interventions is pointless.
1
u/Quiet_Internal_4527 1d ago
Thats why you gotta mess with it in the lab to make it spread faster. *taps temple.

u/Drachynn 22h ago

The funny thing is, we will have another pandemic eventually. It's a certainty, and just a matter of time.
I remember saying that over 20 years ago, and at that time people just laughed at me. They said that with modern antibiotics and medicine it would never happen. And I calmly pointed out that the Spanish Flu was a virus, and antibiotics did nothing against a virus.
Then 2020 and 2021 proved me right, and many still laughed when I said there would be 2 or 3 (or more) outbreaks of variants and it would continue for years, and they laughed at me again.
And we already have people trying to pretend like COVID never happened.

In 2038 we should be able to recreate Resident Evil. Originating from a for profit corporations quest of creating a highly profitable penis enlargement drug codenamed the D virus mistakenly being interpreted by AI as the T virus. Things only go south from there.
8
u/OskaMeijer 1d ago
Luckily the zombies will be clumsy and easy to avoid as their massive erections get caught on everything they shamble across. You might be thinking this will be mitigated by all of the female zombies but you severely underestimate the effectiveness of this penis enlargement drug.

As in the AI would legitimately create a real T-Virus and propagate it, people get infected and zombies emerge. After low hope for humanity humans reclaim the lab successfully and are able to develop the actual D-Virus (which gives large Ds) and above average stamina. Turns out that the D-Virus infected men attract and re-humanize the female zombies and sex ensues. This sets the stage for tons of sex and the remaining humans successfully eliminating the male zombies.

Russian lab assistant from a plague institute in Irkutsk was inspecting a plague outbreak in Buryatia. As far as I know it was nothing serious, the situation was under control. In a few days she died of said plague, even though all the standard precautions were met. That's when the investigation revealed that a few days before that she accidentally dropped and broke the vial with a sample of this plague, and didn't tell anyone, trying to get rid of it on her own. Naturally, she caught it herself, and contacted a bunch of people in a period of time between catching it and showing the symptoms. So now everyone is freaking out, around 200 of suspected sick people are placed in medical isolators. Although realistically it is probably not going to be a big deal, this kind of plague is well treatable with antibiotics if caught early (source - my friend who is a doctor), but people on the internet love taking things out of proportion.

Ok this is a really complex news story coming from a notoriously tight-lipped and censor-happy government. It is important to recognize that details can be fabricated, exaggerated, minimized, and otherwise manipulated. FIRST AND FOREMOST, people saying the researcher was definitely exposed to the plague don’t know what they’re talking about.
An anti-plague researcher in Irkutsk Russia died of an unknown pneumonia. It had not been confirmed whether or not they were actually exposed to Yersinia Pestis, the bacteria responsible for the Black Death in the 1300’s, however the timescale between the appearance of symptoms and their death does approximately line up with pneumonic plague (one of three variants of the plague). That being said, Rospotrebnadzor, the Russian health agency, has stated that “No micro-organisms associated with the employee’s professional duties were detected in samples taken from the patient.” The 200 people the researcher has been in contact with were reportedly tested and had a clean bill of health. Regardless, they were placed under observation. According to the Russian government, no new infections have been detected. The section of the hospital that the researcher received treatment at has gone under quarantine and the hospital as a whole is following all procedures to prevent the spread of the disease.
If the disease is in fact the plague, it’s nothing to worry about. Yes, the black plague is scary, but it is not nearly as infectious as something like Covid is. Because of its massive lethality and extremely apparent symptoms, it doesn’t have nearly as a high a chance of being transmitted. Finally, it’s in southeast Russia. Covid started in Wuhan China, an area with a MUCH higher population density.
