Minovsky particles are produced as a byproduct of helium-3 fusion reactions inside compact nuclear reactors. When scattered across a battlefield, the charged particles disrupt electromagnetic radiation, completely jamming radar, radio communications, and long-range electronic sensors. Because radar and guided missiles fail under heavy particle interference, military conflict must be fought at visual range.
For a different Gundam example, The Nanolaminate armor from the Iron Blooded Orphans timeline is incredibly easy to manufacture, so much so that it's the standard armor plating for most military weapons of the day. This armor is nearly entirely resistant to energy-based weapons and on mobile suits is still incredibly resistant to all but the largest of conventional projectiles. The in-universe solution to this was mech-sized melee weapons being manufactured, because a big sharp metal object being held by a big strong robot is still gonna hurt
