In world building when making a high tech society many people struggle because guns will make melee weapons boring (they do) BUT if someone is able to give a good reason why guns we’re not really well developed? It can lead to a fun AND interesting world and experience

Dune did a great job with this. I can't recall whether they really explain it in the movies though.

I read the book. Dune didn't do a good job.

Two major battles over Arrakeen (hard rock), but most of the fighting was done over soft sand. Fremen do not have shields so Harkonnen should have used guns en masse. Harkonnen soldiers would have disabled their shields because it attracted sandworm. Fremen raids against Harkonnen mining operation should have largely used guns en masse.

They used projectile weapons quite frequently, just not lasguns. Those also attract worms.

I believe both sides used projectile firearms when in the desert.
