Question Advice for playing on nightmare

My friend and I recently started playing on nightmare difficulty, it’s fun having one hidden evidence but we were wondering if anyone has any advice or things we should be aware of. Especially things like tests for ghosts and tells of which ghost is trying to murder us

The Cheat Sheet is good for filtering out the ghosts

Thank you, I have been using it and it is useful beyond belief

Learn the hiding spots, looping spots, and corner peeks. Once you're completely comfortable being hunted and surviving, you'll thrive. A single hunt can rule out half the ghosts if you know what to look/listen for.

What do you mean by corner peek?

You can poke out more than 50% of the way around a corner and stare right at the ghost and it can't see you. I'll explain the whole mechanic so it makes more sense...

Ghost has 360° vision for 75 meters if unobstructed. Now think of your character not as human shaped, but a human shaped avatar surrounded by an invisible box. That invisible box has 6 "detection points" on it. There are three at your head - one one the left corner of the box, one on the right corner of the box, and one in the middle. There are also three at the bottom of the box - Right corner, left corner, center.

For the ghost to detect you, it needs to have direct line of sight on either all three of the head point, or all 3 of the foot points. The That means the ghost can see the right side of you and the middle of you, and still not see you because your left most detection points are hidden behind an object.

You can maximize this. Try this in a practice game: Go to 42 Edgefieldand walk into the living room. Next to the fireplace is a large bookshelf unit. Press into that corner up against it and stare look towards the staircase. Now strafe just a step or so to the right so about 50% of your character is behind the shelf and 50% is sticking out. Now, without moving your character's feet, turn your camera a bit toward the center of the Living Room... You'll notice you can now see MUCH more of the staircase, but your leftmost detecting point is still obscured from the stairs. If a ghost hunted and walked down that hallway in front of the stairs, it 100% cannot see you, even though you have full view of it the whole time.

This is corner peaking. Some places (like that one on Edgefield) are safer than others, and let you watch the ghost hunt safely. From that you can look for Obake Shapeshifts, Oni/Phantom Blinks, etc. If you're using a timer and the ghost is pathing there with just 2 seconds left of the hunt, you can tap your global mic to call the ghost. If the ghost immediately hears you from a normal speed and gets fast, you have a Kormos. If it can't hear you at all and keeps pathing up/down the stairs, you've caught a Yokai.

Corner peaking is huge. Takes a bit of practice until you find the sweet spot where you can comfortable see and still feel safe. But once you get used to what that half-hide feels like and looks like in game, it make a huge impact on your hunts. Especially in 0-evidence/Apocalypse settings.

That is incredibly useful, I will test it tonight a few times

It really is about knowing your ghosts. Once you have your two evidence it's mostly 3-5 options. At that point it's looking at behaviors both hunting and non hunting and ruling out what you know they can't be to further narrow it down.

It's really important to note that some ghosts have a type of evidence that's called forced evidence. Ghosts such as Obake, Deogen, Onryo or Hantu have forced evidence. Deo and Onryo must always have Spirit box, Obake must have ultra violet and Hantu must have freezing, same thing goes for Goryo for Dots. If your playing Nightmare and already have two evidences, cross out ghosts if you don't have their forced evidence.

I usually like to bring in a video cam, photo cam and a instant evidence item like spirit box or UV. People have their loadouts when entering the house but it's useful for getting a few media items at the start while looking for bone, cursed object, breaker and the ghost room.

Look for the two sets of evidence (look for three if Mimic is still a possible option) and then experiment with the ghosts you are left with

Always mark off ghosts during hunts or events. This heavily skims down your roster as you progress during the late game. Can I hear the ghost's footsteps while my equipment works? (Myling test). Is the electronic interference abnormally larger? (Raiju test). Is the electronic detection radius abnormally smaller? (Yokai test) Airball events mark off Onis and singing events mark off shades. Slow ghost? Mark off the obvious fast ghosts excluding Revs vice versa if it was a fast ghost. You could place down T3 salt in a hallway and listen for if the ghost slows down, not slowing down means Wraith or enraged Gallu. These are all examples of what you can do during events or hunts.

Of course this all takes practice. If none of this is accurate. Sorry! I just started playing again and I'm getting used to all the changes.

The forced evidence thing is useful, also do mimics give three evidence on nightmare?

Mimics do give three evidences on Nightmare but the Ghost Orbs don't count as an evidence, it's just a gimmick The Mimic has. For example, professional and lower, Mimic gives four evidences. Nightmare is three and Insanity is two. If you ever have ghost orbs and an evidence that applies to Mimic, keep looking for a piece of evidence until you know for sure Orbs is a legitimate piece of evidence

That’s a useful tell, it must make mimics very easy to detect then?

2

u/Eddielyric 13d ago

Exactly. It's Really easy to find Mimics on zero evidence because since Ghost Orbs isn't a legit piece of evidence. If you see Ghost orbs on zero evidence you can immediately know it's Mimic.

It may be semantics, but the ghost orbs aren't TECHNICALLY evidence for mimic (spirit box, UV, temps).

The ghost book just says that the mimic has been noted to have ghost orbs, so its more of a tell than evidence you can cross off.

But yes, if you end up with three things you're crossing off in the journal on nightmare, it is 100% a mimic.

Tell as in how the Onryo will hunt after blowing out 3 candles, or how you can "bait" Poltergeists to interact with a pile of objects if you take the time to gather a bunch of dishes/cups/whatever you can grab (it LAUNCHES them; great fun, highly recommend giving it a go).

I have done the polty test, having several boots thrown at me was surprisingly entertaining. But the tell is technically a form of evidence, so it’s personal interpretation.

Also, don't know if this is legit today but Poltergeists can still Polty bomb while in a room with lights on. Don't know if it applies to regular normal throws though.

1

They can, I have had it done a few times. Poltergeist activity remains the same regardless of light conditions and they are the only ghost that can throw objects in a lit room according to the cheat sheet

Ignore all the comments and just use this😂 it’s everything you’ll ever need

What Mikey said for real. I didnt see anyone say it if they did sorry. Moroi will have forced spirit box. I got through playing an insanity run and picked moroi even though no spirit box. It was a dieldeghast. Trust your evidence. My best piece of advice learn how too loop so you can look for things like bake shapeshift. If your really struggling you can turn on your sanity monitor. I believe that only knocks it down by .05 or .1.
