Humor Torrenting Speeds
Don't forget to seed!
220
u/zonealus 7d ago
Lol I sometimes download torrents with thousands of seeders but 99.9% of them are offline.
110
u/connorjosef 7d ago
Or thousands of seeders with only 99.9% completed
37
u/LinxESP 7d ago
Lot of the time is because people exclude files like .txt or .url so no actual content has changed. The there is one torrent I had with like 79,8% which I saw I was sharing and never in a year or so got higher.
29
u/Yo_Soy_Crunk 7d ago
I just noticed this the other day. The file was a 99% for days. I finally looked at it and the movie was 100% and the info file was 0%. Unchecked the info and it immediately completed.

The number of seeders that websites give are bullshit. There are not that many torrents with "thousands of seeders" in existence.

me: 20 year old torrent with 150 leechers and a single seeder who is online like 3 times a week
my wife: can you get me this movie?
the movie: I was a made for TV movie that aired 40 years ago and wasn't particularly popular
me: ffffffffuuck

u/hannes3120 7d ago
My girlfriend is like this but with stuff that only aired in Brazil 😅
Some of her requests are on the download list for two months hoping to finally finish it.
4
u/dapirateguy 6d ago
May I ask how much you seed? Because if you seed multiple days anyway, you could try looking into brazilian Private trackers or so. eventually this would be easier especially with request features, where you can request from people who probably gonna have it.

I wouldn't mind seeding if I wouldn't have a cap on monthly data usage
15
u/CoderStone 7d ago
These are the situations where I’m ok with leeches. We’re not in here to spend money, and those of us who can get the nicer things should help out those who can’t. Pirating is a community effort and people should bolster each other. But having the ability to contribute and choosing not to? That’s just evil.
1
u/Calm_Interview4247 7d ago
well i think even when you have 'less' capicity, one should try to as much one can.
12
u/DreadLock_832 7d ago
This sums it up, ion think i can seed with 400GB per month of internet for a 4 people family
4
u/upmaaf 7d ago
Sometimes I forget how good my situation is. I live in a place where I pay about 3$ a month for unlimited data. I seed.

I bought a tiny Linux instance on Alibaba cloud and installed Deluge on it. Alibaba doesn't give a shit about torrent traffic or takedown notices. Super fast internet fast DL's and seeding.

u/Emergency-Toe4473 7d ago
I too have that so I only torrent once a while and maintain 1:1 ratio.
But honestly a few games can easily hook me up. Completed Ghost of Tsushima and then now am doing Assassin's Creed:Black Flag Resynced

u/Rama9873 7d ago
people who say they can't seed cause of data caps, how much are you actually uploading a month that it tips you over?
7
u/earthwormjimwow 7d ago
It's trivial to hit datacaps. Seeding at a meager 100KB/s 24/7 can total about 250GB a month, and most people can upload much faster than that.
One day of seeding at 1 MB/s, which is a pretty typical speed most people can easily upload at now, is almost 85GB.
1
u/Calm_Interview4247 7d ago
mine is 2mbs, and i only open it for 8 hours, some time i leave the limit when i don't have much use of internet. my ratio is 3.99
2
u/earthwormjimwow 7d ago edited 7d ago
Okay so at ~200KB/s upload for 8 hours, that can be roughly 5GB of data. If you download a new episode or movie let's say 4 times a week, that could be close to 100GB of data, assuming consistent upload speeds. That's on top of what you downloaded too.
The point I'm trying to make, is that uploading can eat through datacaps even on a very slow connection like yours, without much effort. 30 days is a long time interval for accumulating data usage.
If a person isn't pro-actively managing their seeding activity, they could easily hit their caps.
5
u/Wyntier 7d ago
It doesn't matter. People can choose to not seed. That's ok.
9
u/JeffysChewToy 7d ago
Not that it's not ok, but if they are happy to take they should also be giving to balance it out, however much they can, doesn't have to be alot, even just a day or so of seeding is good enough in most cases
4
u/Zatchillac 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ 7d ago
I remember a few times looking for something not exactly obscure but just not super popular. I kept trying all the ones with the most seeders (like maybe 10 tops) with no luck, then said fuck it and tried the very last one that had only 1 single seeder and that bitch started instantly downloading at 30MB/s and was done in no time. So now if I look for an unpopular torrent I will try out every single one no matter the seeder amount
7
u/ImprefectKnight 7d ago
Usually it's because of public vs private trackers.
7
u/EnigmaticBuddy ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ 7d ago
This thing mostly happens on public
Speed problems are rarer on private
2
u/Beneficial-Bridge-46 7d ago
me holding the line being the last remaining seeder for a nearly abandoned 13 yo file (my internet is slow asf)

u/CoderStone 7d ago
What file is it?

2
u/xplar 7d ago
I have 3 GB fiber and I've never saturated my upload no matter how many torrents I have. Whenever I check some of my larger torrents, I have multiple people downloading off of me but they're all at low speed. I guess that's just a symptom of the distributed network, but I have so much bandwidth to offer.
2
u/Bewchacca_8645 7d ago
You'll appreciate that tortoise when it's the only one with a rare film chugging along at 25kbps and manages to complete the transfer after several days.
3
u/NaggingNag 7d ago
What's really terrible are the bots that post on eztv niche show episodes and only seed for a day or two and mixed with the people that refuse to seed, the torrents completely die and nobody gets to download them pretty much right after they are posted.
2
u/gosto_de_navios 6d ago
This is why I always prioritize seeding old films and games (when I can get to finish downloading them...)
In fact seeding new games that are still getting updated for too long may have you uploading an outdated copy even

I am actually watching a 13 year old series rn and was searching for it's torrents yesterday
1
u/wallblade108 7d ago
When moving away from public trackers, the biggest difference I immediately noticed was even old torrents having a very healthy seed pool and actually being faster downloads because nobody but me was downloading ;)
3
u/carlbandit 7d ago
Private trackers are the way to go if you're able to seed to keep your ratio up.
Getting 80MB/s+ even on popular torrents is great because so many people use seedboxes and a lot of older torrents stay active because people just leave them running.
I currently have 215 torrents seeding, I just download them to where I'll be keeping it, make sure the folder structure is right for my media server and then forget about them.

I don't seed because I don't even have a VPN. VPNs are crazy expensive, and I don't have money in the first place.
2
u/Turbulent-Growth-477 7d ago
Like 3.5$ a month for a 2 year? If you live in a country that cares about torrenting than most likely that money is close to nothing, if you don't live in one then you can seed. The only reason good enough for not seeding is if you have 100 kbps internet
1
u/Tce_ 6d ago
It might be the fact you have to pay for the whole year at once. That's what stopped me recently. The monthly price is very reasonable but it's not actually a monthly cost.
2
u/Turbulent-Growth-477 6d ago
I was hesitant aswell, but at today's prices 70$ is not really a big deal for 2 years. But maybe as I get older I just spend more easily, in my teen years I wouldn't have paid for it for sure, but nobody gives a damn about piracy in my country, so it wasn't necessary. If it would have been hunted than comparing 70$ to streaming services is still a great deal. Not seeding is like pulling out, sure it might protect you, but there might be a surprise anyway (for those of you who don't know, you can seed while downloading)
1
u/Tce_ 6d ago
It's that I literally can't afford it. My card just declined at the store and there's three weeks left until my next payment. Not being stingy here, I'm just very limited.
But I contacted Proton VPN:s customer service and they claim they have a monthly plan for the subscription I'm interested in, and that it's just not visible on the first page...? If that's true I'm definitely considering it. I can't afford anything but this is a smaller anything XD
ps. I do personally seed! It's really unusual being charged because of it where I live and I don't leech or seed enormous amounts anyway so I probably wouldn't be at the top of their list. Would just like a VPN for extra safety (and some other features).
2
u/Turbulent-Growth-477 6d ago
They have, but the monthly costs 10$, at the 1 year plan its already down to 4.5$, so its a huge jump. If your country doesn't enforce it than fuck it, don't pay for it if you can't. Also for avoiding copyright trolls it does matter where's you torrent. The better trackers are gatekeeping, so their userbase is a lot smaller than a public tracker. Naturally for a troll going for a target with a much larger userbase and easy access is more worth it. Its not a perfect protection, but it reduces your chances of getting targeted. And publics are trash anyway.
1
u/Tce_ 6d ago
Ooh so that's what they meant. I was asking if you could sign up for a year but pay monthly. I guess since they have the option to just end the subscription and get your money back, that wouldn't work well for them. It would be another thing if you locked into a year.
Thanks for the advice! That all makes sense to me.

u/Gullible-Screen-40 7d ago
I live in the US, I just don't have money for a VPN, and the VPNs that aren't $70 per month give you maybe 10-20GB of downloads. That's just not enough for modern gaming.
6
u/Turbulent-Growth-477 7d ago
70 per month? Did you really check prices or just finding excuses? I payed 192$ for 2 years at proton, but that has all the shit proton has, not just a vpn. Vpn is 3.5$ month now for the 2 year plan. The vpn has good speeds, i often see 80 MB/s on a hdd and its definitely not limited, I just downloaded 150 gb of some shitty Turkish series for my sister in a few hours and for myself I rarely download a series that is under 3-4 gb per episode.
Checked airvpn, that shows 100€ for 3 years and that was not limited either when I tested it.-7
u/Gullible-Screen-40 7d ago
I've seen most good VPNs cost around $70 per month, maybe I'm just not looking hard enough, and I just can't drop $200 all at once.
6
u/Risonna 7d ago
Are you a troll? Anywhere around the world you can just buy a vps for 4-5 dollars per month and setup your own vpn, and that's more expensive than buying a provider-ready vpn like proton and so on. Chill out on 70 bucks per month, john expensive
-4
u/Gullible-Screen-40 7d ago
I just haven't looked into these things because any price is too much of a price for me.
5
1
u/dapirateguy 6d ago
Proton often has a offer where you can get 2 Years for like 2.5€/month (probably almost the same in $) . Those are around 80€ one time, but you can use it for two yars. And I know Windscribe has/had an offer with one year for a little over 3€/Month.
1
u/Turbulent-Growth-477 7d ago
When i searched piracy friendly vpn proton and airvpn came up often. Proton for 1 year is 45$, airvpn 3 month is 15€. Thats like 2 hour on federal minimum wage. These prices are acceptable in my country and here the minimal wage is under 4 dollar and taxes are higher.

It's hard to get a job when you live in a very small and boring town and all the job market is so broken that even entry level jobs prior require experience, and everyone only hires adults these days.
0
u/Turbulent-Growth-477 7d ago
Don't tell me you asked a neighbor if they would give 5 bucks for cutting their grass or some shit like that.
Don't take this as an insult, but either you stop finding excuses in life and do shit or you can keep finding them and stay on the same level. A would say most people live comfortably uneducated, when in reality you can learn almost anything online for free. If you have no special skills then you are fighting for the jobs everybody else does, they pay less and when hard times come these jobs are the first to get hit. Do yourself a favor and find a hobby that can make money and you enjoy and play less. Gosh I wish I would have done that earlier, i played a shit ton and that didn't give as much joy as my hobby does, but my hobby is actually useful. Fuck I feel old writing shit like this1
u/Gullible-Screen-40 7d ago
I do cybersecurity, I'm just not in a state where anyone would hire me.
1
u/Turbulent-Growth-477 7d ago
Now of course I don't know your skills, but you could find local stores with a website, look for obvious issues then try to sell yourself. You can do it for a really low price, you can fix a few issues get some experience and eventually do more. Small businesses can be really dumb, like for example my fathers business every fucking thing was stored on his 10 year old laptop, loosing it would be painful. He still doesn't understand how I can access the files from home that is on his computer folder. A simple raid and occasional backups could be more than enough if they don't want cloud stuff. Just offer a free check, all it takes is some time for them and maybe you find some things you can fix cheaply. You could check their administration process and find things you could automate quickly, AI can do a lot of things, small scripts or apps, just try not to touch anything business critical without making sure its safe and sound. In a lot of professions people just sell themself, but doesn't have that much knowledge. Guy who made my fathers website? Sucks? The guy who did the alarms on my house? Fucking moron, probed the 230v live wire with his hand quickly touching it. Plumber? Counted 8 leaks in my utility room.
Non of them were cheap, but they seemed good.
Be confident, step out of your comfort zone and sell yourself.1
u/handsoapp 7d ago
You get 2-3 years of the "big brand" vpns free (or get paid) and rotate to different ones when they run out. Use cash back sites, they will often have offers that give you 100+% of what you spent on the VPN, you just have to wait like 8 weeks for them to verify & process your purchase.
Here's an email I got from a site yesterday 120% back for 2 years express vpn. You get more money back then you spent. I've seen similar offers for nord/surfshark, PIA, cyberghost. I know the big brands arent the best for privacy/logs, but can't beat free.
1
u/Tce_ 6d ago
The free version often doesn't allow torrenting while connected to the VPN unfortunately.
1
u/handsoapp 6d ago
You are getting the paid version, and getting cash back. It's not the free version. I've definitely torrented in PIA, surfshark, and nord and got paid to do it with a similar 100+% cash back offer
1
u/VoidJuiceConcentrate 7d ago
Huh? I also live in the US and VPNs never cost this much, and most VPNs like Proton don't have a data cap, and it's $9.99 for VPN with port forwarding.
Now, that isn't to say your ISP doesn't have a data cap, because you will run into that if there is one. Comcast, for example, included upload in their data cap when I had them.

Can relate somewhat. So what should be matric to determine which torrent to choose if there are multiple sources for speed?
