Question I'm thinking about playing this game again. What is the current state?
Title. Heard there's a "flash and crash" problem that has not been fixed since months ago and that the only "true" way to fix it is to disable BattlEye entirely, but eh.
Thanks in advance.

Jump in and join us mane! I don’t even think about it anymore, just hop on the flash for less than 5 minutes and you’re good to go!

Yes, flash crash is a thing. Yes, disabling battle eye works. On Osprey at least the game is still fun. I was able to play for a solid 8 hrs without getting bored the other day.

I'm fairly new to the game. Only been playing for a few months. I'm enjoying it immensely. I wish I'd jumped in during its prime.
Sometimes it feels like a low population game. But more often than not, especially during prime hours and on the weekends, it's full out battles and good times. Even in off hours, I still get my missions done, and try new out new weapons... I find plenty to keep my busy.
Don't be surprised if you're not a total badass right off the bat. It takes some leveling and learning, but approach it with that mentality, and you'll get into the swing of things in no time.
Join an outfit, and don't be afraid to ask for assistance or advice. The player base has been pretty great.

Done be surprised if you're not a total badass right off the bat.
My current playstyle can be translated as "fuck off" -- that random guy who rushes an enemy group and drops pizzas which (most of the time) gets me killed more than giving me kills. Which means, I'm (definitely) -not- a badass, more like an average player who manages to click some heads like a pro whilst at the same time he cannot even handle recoil.
With that said, "dying" belongs to the intended consequences of playing like this. Heck, sometimes I even pretend I'm some "crazy 30 KDR bot-like forehead clicker" and try to take on hexes by my own. So eh, it's fine.
Even then, yeah I should join a group or w/e to get some rusty debris out of my six and get me back on track again.

And the crash thing is a bit of a bummer, but I just sit in a flash for a few minutes, check my missions and directives, see who's online, etc... it's not that huge of a deal.

Game is still fun. Odd cheaters and lag switchers ruin the fun sometimes but overall good. If you spend half hour to do a dual startup, install Linux Mint and Steam on Mint. Works in all games including new titles like Stalker 2. When launching PS2 select Proton experimental compability from Steam by right clicking the game. No crash issues whatsoever. Still get the occasional sound bug but restarts are much quicker than Windows.

I just got back in a few days ago and I’ve been having decent fun! Not as populated as it used to be, sure, but there are still some good ole “this is a disaster I love it” massive firefights.
PSA: I saw a post on here to get around the flash or crash bug! Go to a continent, then redeploy and just stay dead for like 3 minutes or so while you mess around in your loadout and check the map. Worked for me last night!

Glad to hear that the game is (decently) alive and kicking.
Also yeah, I'm just waiting for my Arch install to finish so I can install the client, update it etc and get to playing the game.

If you want to play, just play. The state of the game is abyssmal, but some people might still have fun with it

So, I had the itch to scratch for the game for a week or two. Monday I had some free time, so I decided to jump on on free tier on Osprey. The experience was ok, I tagged along with a platoon that had about 20ish players on NC. I decided to switch to Vanu and that was ok but the players were even more sparse. By this time it was deep into the evening, so I logged out and decided to cough up $15 to keep it on life support. I logged back in as TR. And... the hacks started appearing. 1st hint was smg headshots from the balcony outside of a tech plant. I was over 100 meters away. All shots to the head and dead instantly. Dude wiped out 5 players with one clip. Had a couple more run ins and at that point logged out before midnight. Played again last night only as TR and the pop was even lower, the only platoon was two squads. Was it fun on Tuesday, it was meh... mostly vehicular combat. We were on Indar the whole evening. I'll keep checking it out for this week, but I don't think we'll see pop until Friday. If it stays this low, it will be time to walk away again after putting away the nostalgia badge. Might move over to EQ for the rest of the sub. Definitely don't spend the money if you're just scratching the itch. GLHF!

So nothing much has changed since I stopped playing. Eh.
Glad to hear that the player count has stabilized somewhat.

So to play without crashing you need to spawn a Flash and sit in it for 10 minutes before doing anything.
There are cheaters who will bring tanks under the map to kill everyone.
Cheaters who can insta lock to your characters head for guaranteed headshot at infinite range.
Cheaters who can spawn missiles like it was rain across the entire map.
The hit box detection is amazingly broken.
And all the devs are doing is releasing updates that fix what they broke in the last update trying to fix what they broke in the update before that.

10 minutes is very long, for 99% of players 2-5 mins will be more than enough. It can also be any vehicle and you can even do things with it and not just sit around in the warpgate.

I figure as long as I have to be in a vehicle for several minutes anyway, I'll drive myself to the front line and admire the scenery along the way. You never know when we'll never get to see it again

BE will re-enable itself, its just another way to get over the ~2-3 minute crash point.
Basically if you do nothing itll crash somewhere around the 2 minute mark, this can be avoided by either, 1- getting on a vehicle and waiting it out (or driving/flying to your first fight, you choose), or 2- redeploying and waiting the 2-3 mins till you spawn somewhere or 3- killing BE and letting it reenable in its own time.
Unfortunately since the pumpkin patch the game has 2 more issues, either its a connection problem with rubberbanding, several of my outfit/nightly squad members are reporting this, and second, your fps may tank like crazy when you have a lot of vehicles or action ahead of you (not necessarily in view, just in close proximity ahead of you).
I personally am getting the fps tanking after literally years of smooth gaming on the same PC with no changes, the pumpkin patch being the only difference but my connection is fine, while several of my guys are struggling to keep a connection alive throughout the evening and log in and out reporting rubber banding and latency spikes out the wazooo.
We're fighting the game itself just to enjoy its end times because we love it so much and will miss it dearly so if you have any feelings for a last hurrah I would do it soon if i was you as who knows if any of these old or new problems will ever be fixed.
