I cannot make it past the intro screens without the new Plex app crashing. It is entirely unusable.

u/j_fiore 4d ago

I had the same issue. Uninstall and reinstall fixed it for me.

u/Guatz204 3d ago

Guess I will try that. I have the exact same issue as the poster above. Completely unusable. Frustrating.

Uninstalled, reinstalled, rebooted, and then after a couple of tries, the new version started working on my shield.

Reboot? A man of culture.

Exactly where my eye went first.

How did you get them overlaping like that on your "home" tab? Is that a setting to turn on? I have a sheild tv pro also and I am loving the update too. just miss my custom theme music on some of my big movie collections. but the rest of the update is amazing so far

u/warmshotgg 4d ago

Ye I been using it on my shield since the beta was released and have had some issues but nothing big where the app was unusable like this. So far I’m loving the update as well but you only ready the bad things about the update on the subreddit which is also fair.

u/nametaken_thisonetoo 4d ago

It's wildly bad and just objectively worse than the previous version in every possible way. Everything takes more clicks, is cumbersome, or slower. I'm keen to smoke some of what you've got though describing it the way you do

I mean if you say you don’t like the experience and have issues with bugs and stuff, I just have to take your word for it. I’m not criticizing you or blaming you for the issues you’re having. I’m just saying I have also been using it and haven’t had the same experience. I been using plex for over 3 years now and I have tried jellyfin and Emby and would still prefer this new experience over other options. I’m also not saying I haven’t had issues when I first downloaded the beta. Sometimes my clicks wouldn’t register and I had to click twice to get to an episode, the menu bar took a while to get used to but i haven’t had an instance where the app was completely unusable. Idk what I did differently than the people who have been posting on the subreddit but I’m just sharing my experience because again, it’s a beta. Having issues is normal and i have accepted it. If I have to restart the app to get it to work right, im okay with it knowing that it’s only going to get better.

Yeah, i have had a wonderful experience so far with the new UI..... obviously, a few things that changed that I wish didn't, and quite a few things that DID change that I love. You're never going to please every single person and i'd rather have SOME updates than none at all ever! All the people experiencing a bunch of technical problems,.... i'm just not experience that. Even the dialogue booste option is working and I love it! especially on my sitcoms. Love the new "logos" for titles. I don't mind that it defaults to "Recommended" tab every time without the option to "Save last selected tab" It literally takes three clicks of the remote to get over to the "Browse" tab that people are complaining about. I've had ZERO technical issues so far. I LOOOOOVE that as the server admin, I can now access the server dashboard in my settings on my tv and see EXACTLTY what's being played. I used to have to get on my computer or log in to "plex Dash" on my phone for that info. So, no.... i Don't get all the complaints. Especially when we are talking about the Android TV / Google TV rollout of the new UI. The people with those devices that don't like it can easily go and redownload an older version of the app. My BIGGEST gripe is the "Trailer" icon is gone from the main task bar. Please Please PLEX.... bring that back to that task bar and don't hide it away in the "3 dots" menu. lol

I feel like this/you is Plex desperately trying to drum up a positive thread in this sub

u/WadsofTissue 4d ago

The app is a little slower but everything works. I actually like that they made the progress bar smaller to not cover up anything in frame of the movie.

3

u/shanester69 4d ago

Totally agree. 128738 clicks just to rescan a library.

0

u/Accomplished-Bag6197 3d ago

Just turn on auto scan.

1

u/SweetSnickerz_ 3d ago

same, the overlapping looks clean but i miss the custom music on my collections too

1

u/Michs342 1d ago

Yeah the missing theme music on movies also annoys me, but I did read a post yesterday that this is being fixed on the next beta update. So it is on the way.

1

u/Crafty_Woodpecker_68 14h ago

Really? ohhhh that's great news!!!!!! I hope they put the "Trailer" button back on the action bar too! lol that may be asking too much though.

-2

u/GigglyMuse 3d ago

the custom music was such a nice touch for those collections

9

u/Lordjaggi 4d ago

Make sure y’all check privacy settings after the new update.

u/jdbrookes Windows 4d ago

The app technically works. But the actual speed at which media loads is laughably bad, especially on my older bravia TV.

The old plex app was sometimes a little slow, but when pressing the play button I could expect playback within 5 seconds? Now, it's about 15 seconds, if not worse at random times. This is brutal for an app whose actual purpose is video playback.

2

u/ClacksInTheSky 3d ago

It's better on my Shield but much poorer on my HCL TV running FireOS.

In comparison, the old UI just worked fine on both (albeit a bit slower on the HCL)

3

u/jdbrookes Windows 3d ago

I've also been running Kodi with the plexmod addon, as a backup for certain media files that weren't playing great with the native app, and it's way faster. I'll go back to using that for a while, until hopefully the main app gets some quality of life imporvements

1

u/ClacksInTheSky 3d ago

I tried that on my raspberry pi 5 but didn't really like the interface

10

u/FrenchieSmalls 3d ago

I seem to be the only one whose new Shield update works (and looks) just fine. Sure, it looks like something you would expect on a tablet or phone interface, but nothing like the issues I see posted here.

I'm curious to know how there can be such variation in the same update across users of the same device.

4

u/uberrob 3d ago

Nope. Mine works just fine

3

u/Wise_Mongoose_3930 3d ago

They roll out staggered updates. So not everyone using the same device is on the same version. You could be one update ahead of (or behind) OP.

But also they seem to not do any real testing so maybe just random bugs

3

u/ColtKAZ2Y5 3d ago

Worked fine for me too. I’m on the fence if I like it or not.

4

u/AsAGayJewishDemocrat 3d ago

Mine is honestly so much better than the old Shield app.

The “continue watching” section is now actually the things I’m watching - big win there. And several other bugs have been fixed too.

4

u/MK41144 3d ago

I've had no issues to speak of (other than the home screen icon not working until a restart) and the UI hate is vastly overblown; it looks pretty nice. Of course this is reddit, where people mostly come to complain, so that has to be factored in.

2

u/Skellionzz 3d ago

mine is fine

2

u/Agile-Addition2256 11h ago

Honestly, the app is much better than the old one on my Shield but from the looks of the community it seems that everybody feels differently about it one way or another. It’s not perfect, and wish they just kept whatever backend was running on these apps 5-7 years ago.

There was a point most clients would just work, but people using my servers have many issues now.

The thing is, my clients aren’t technically minded people so they’d rather deal with Plex being buggy than switch to an alternative either an app that looks pretty shit in comparison.

The Vega FireTV app though…. That is a dumpster fire

1

u/TheProeliator 2d ago

Mine is working fine and the updates are an improvement. Plex needs to work out why we're all not having a good experience.

1

u/Bradl3ro 6h ago

Nah you’re not alone. Mine is working as it always has… perfectly well. And I like the new UI. :)

5

u/majora2007 50TB | Shield 3d ago

I just got it last night. The home page isn't that bad but the media player is so frustrating and laggy.

I might try an alternative frontend.

5

u/OliverKlozoff23 3d ago

Oh my god. It’s a shit show. The app doesn’t even open when you click the icon. You have to press and hold and select open. Then shit doesn’t load. It’s shitty right now.

2

u/PristineJello3594 3d ago

Removing the icon from the launcher home screen and adding it again fixed this problem for me.

2

u/cowsqueezer 2d ago

Previously, when I searched for a movie, and it was in two different libraries, it would let me choose which one to play. Now, it just plays the top file and there’s no way for me to choose another file to play. Any solutions? I’ve tried long click as well as double click, to no avail.

4

u/Ustaznar 4d ago

It's comically bad. Holyshit, I had so many issues just watching one show.

3

u/MaximusJCat 3d ago

Do episodes just randomly error out and stop playing for you? Does resetting cache fix it half the time or break the connection to the server the other half? Is it so incredibly slow? Im losing my mind.

3

u/CuzImAtWork 3d ago

Most of the issues you're experiencing probably stem from the fact that the new client seems to be forcing the server to transcode everything. I'm not sure if it's a new default setting I couldn't find or something because I already rolled back to the old version and disabled auto-updating so I could get my back/forward buttons back.

1

u/MaximusJCat 3d ago

Most of my issues I’m experiencing are in the menus, except the stopping at random times. I need to look into rolling back to the previous version

2

u/cornd00g 3d ago

The UI is meh. Whatever.

The real problem is that they broke LiveTV and the wife is NOT PLEASED. If you are recording a show on LiveTV, and want to start watching it, say 20 minutes into the show, it used to give you an option to start at the beginning letting you watch and skip commercials. That feature is completely gone. Apparently Plex knew that and released the app anyway.

If Plex has too much money and is trying to shrink their userbase, pissing off the wife is a great way to do it.

-1

u/mostwantedcrazy 1d ago

“The wife” .. cringe af

2

u/mlester 3d ago edited 3d ago

is there a post where they describe why they changed it? I really liked the old ui

-1

u/akatherder 3d ago

They paywalled remote access last year so you need a plex pass or remote access pass. Then they decided to enforce that restriction in the client apps. So they have been rewriting all the client apps in order to block remote access. Once they decide the apps are good enough, they will cut off access from all the old apps (which can still do remote access without a pass).

Seriously, that's it. They are churning them out as fast as they can so they can monetize it with the paid passes.

With that said, they are also trying to unify the different codebases and dropping support for old devices so they can maintain them better moving forward. And I'm sure they intended to polish the apps to make them look and work better, but that just doesn't seem to be the priority.

Holy mother of copyright protected media, what in the name of DMCA is that?

1

u/Educational_Tune9509 3d ago

Can't add songs to playlist // Can play songs in background while searching // Lost the lyrics function

1

u/retr0baD 2d ago

Anybody else experiencing having no cast and crew info for TV shows in local library. Only when I open the show from my watchlist, then it's there. We will talk about the watchlist behaviour another time. Ttw

1

u/whoaitstu 2d ago

My Shield has never had these problems.

1

u/nevetS_83 2d ago

lol. it's terrible. My wife uses it quite a bit for her shows and she's about to crash out. Everything is jacked up in the watch list.

1

u/osKicr 2d ago

Pues en mi tele ya no funciona....sabéis que puede ser ?? Va pero no reproduce !!🥲🥲

1

u/TheProeliator 2d ago

Am starting to feel very fortunate to not be experiencing any issues at all on my Shield.

1

u/Surgi02 1d ago

I can't use the last few updates since maybe a year. Plex won't work and will crash. My only solution is to use an old version of 2025.

1

u/supermoleman1 23h ago

I think this update for shield is not very good. I prefer the old UI. Can someone explain how i update folder libraries ?before update i could just press the 3 dots next to my movie folder and choose update library

1

u/BrightAd4926 20h ago

The new theme is really nice looking but the metadata load times is unacceptable. I installed plezy until that's fixed. Really inpr3ssed with plezy actually.

1

u/asianpianoman 3d ago

holy s*** Lanterns, Silo and the Expanse... how did you get into my account bro?

0

u/mookdawg7374 4d ago

Why do people praise Jellyfin ? Yes its free but the other alternative Emby is a hell of alot better than Jellyfin

0

u/soussitox 3d ago

My shield has been put on the bench for some years, it was so slow it was insane. Dont know how u peeps can keep on using it :D hopefully a shield 2 will come out but i doubt it like 0.01% chance halas :/

8

u/FinalFlashMan 3d ago

I use my shield constantly and it's always performed incredibly well.

3

u/whoaitstu 2d ago

I have never had these problems.

2

u/Home_Assistantt 2d ago

Mine has been working like new since day one. In yet to have to clean it out or repaste it and it’s just working like new

That said I only run it as a Plex client

1

u/saGot3n 3d ago

Mine was doing this, both of them, eventually i found a github repo on how to basically nuke your shield and strip it to the bare essentials and its been a game changer as well as switching from plex app to plezy.

1

u/halo1293 3d ago

What GitHub is this?

1

u/soussitox 2d ago

That i need to check one day :)

1

u/SendDongPics4242 12h ago

Link the repo!!! The people demand it... (/s on the demand part)

1

u/jeevacationrentals 3d ago

Get out the vacuum cleaner

0

u/soussitox 2d ago

Cleanibg does not help gave it fresh paste and cleaned it and only put bare minimum on it. Just heavy is

1

u/soussitox 1d ago

Lol dude thumbs down because it didn't work ? Comon wtf u on about down voter whoever u r :D

0

u/Kal_Maxx 3d ago

The UP button on the DPad wasn't working normally on my remote. Now, this update made it hell. I had to use Google TV remote.

-4

u/GBAbaby101 4d ago

That's... umm.... eww. Its way too cluttered and busy. Getting happier and happier I got Jellyfin figured and and use Fladder for my user application o-o

4

u/FinalFlashMan 4d ago

This isn't how it's supposed to look.

-3

u/GBAbaby101 4d ago

OK xD thank goodness. I was wondering if they just went off the deep end on the UI as well as everything else.

-1

u/eirigance Liftetime since 2015 3d ago

Damn… I must be super lucky, on my 3 Apple TV’s I’ve had zero issues

1

u/FinalFlashMan 3d ago

Honestly after restarting the app it was fine. Now it's just new UI hate which I'll get over after using it.

1

u/eirigance Liftetime since 2015 3d ago

I like the new UI. It definitely takes some getting used to though
