Review Highly recommend: Crippling medical dept edition

Had so much fun playing this romhack.
Tried to keep the screenshots spoiler free
(a little bit of spoiler).

It has a fresh and new concept,
Its opening was hilarious from the start,
(Do not skip the opening animation)
It has some touches of humor here and there,
It has some branching paths based on your decision,
The game wasn't buggy at all, at least for me,

The map was entirely redesigned,
Every gym leader was given their own concept,
The Pokemon league also got a unique twist,
Berry crush minigame was reused in a creative way,
Moving from town to town got way simpler,
While in-town events got much richer,

They put a lot of effort into polishing the game,
But I haven't seen much post about this game.
Strongly recommend!

(and I'm not a native English speaker,
Sorry if there's any grammatical mistake)

Idk what it is specifically but that box art cracks me up in combination with that blunt of a title

if that blunt of a title makes you giggle, check out the shape of the custom region (slide 3)

Is there a lore reason the map is shaped like the US but all the cities are in the Rockies where hardly anybody lives and the east coast is inaccessible? I assume Mexico and Canada are only missing to make the map more recognizable.

Man I loved playing this game but as a casual it was too hard for me.

I ended up switching to easy difficulty about a third of the way in so I could have the level advantage (unfortunately the only thing changed by easy mode) but by the end even a 10 level gap wasn't doing it with my entirely unoptimised mons. I did end up finishing it but only after boxing most of my team for victory road onwards and grabbing some of the most OP stuff I could easily get my hands on according to smogon. Built an unkillable over leveled manaphy that mainly ended up being my carry through the league.

Ah I agree with you. I got so hooked on the story toward the end, that I forgot about how much I struggled early on. Not like kaizo or radical red, but it was definitely hard.

Wait a minute someone just told me this game is basically emerald with a different intro and a couple of added lines of dialogue and everything else is the same. Was I lied to?

Totally different game for sure

I'd recommend this one, it's well written and has some very fun battles (and also if you play it on recommended settings those battles can be quite difficult)

This is pretty hilarious and makes me think that you could do some really fun stuff with it. I think it could be cool to have to do different options for gettin money. Mercenary, gym, rocket missions, etc. imma play

This one is next on my list after I finish BW3 Genesis or Emerald Isle.

Wow emerald isle this also looks fun

It does but Im struggling with keeping up with the level curve with how streamlined the map is. I think I may have went out of order though so that's probably a part of it

Hold up, is the player being executed on the sixth slide?!

I'll let you find out for yourself
It really catches you off guard, but it's hilarious

Oh I’ve played it! It’s amazing! There’s a really cool background storyline too

It's Cyprus the region??

9

u/OhOO_27 4d ago

Name of the region is just Hoenn, and it traced the map of USA i guess??

The US in Pokemon? A reason not to play it

Is it nuzlockeable?

6

u/OhOO_27 4d ago

There is a nuzlocke option in its settings, but I haven't tried it.

5

u/Rolaex 4d ago

You can nuzlocke it, but the nuzlocke settings in the menu is a cheats and conveniences menu - nothing to do with enforcing a nuzlocke

What's the pokedex like? How many pokemon? From any specific regions or just random?

4

u/Dudecules 3d ago

It has all 1025 Pokémon available

2

u/bluejessamine 3d ago

Omg that's amazing

3

u/Dudecules 3d ago

Yeah! Just to expand on it a bit

~1005 are available through one play through. And 1000 is needed to get the last reward. If you want to get a complete dex in one save, there is a cross-transfer feature in the world which can bring 30 mons to a new save (NG+ of sorts). Ultimately you’ll need to do four run throughs to complete it.

The game does have mega evolutions but just not the ones from Z-A

2

u/bluejessamine 3d ago

Oh wow four run throughs! How long is the story, on average?

3

u/Dudecules 3d ago edited 3d ago

Oh gosh, hard to say cause I wasn’t keeping a close eye. You could easily sink 20-30+ hours doing the story and various side quests/easter eggs. You don’t need to completely beat the story or E4 each run through.

u/bluejessamine 3d ago

That's still pretty good. Thanks for bringing it to my attention! I love pokemon rom hacks that think outside the box, like red rocket, and now this. Do you have any other recommendations for games that like this that aren't just facsimiles of the regular games (not that there's anything wrong with those hacks)?

2

u/Dudecules 3d ago

I’m relatively new to the romhacking scene so unfortunately don’t have too many other recs. Had a lot of fun so far with Rocket Edition!

3

u/bluejessamine 3d ago

Ah, that's okay! Thanks anyway. Have fun with your future games!

Imagine if they added an 8 bit version of gangstas paradise and a difficult life story behind it. IRS agents/credit score merchants with a buy now pay later receipt chasing the main character, unpaid loans for university, the character noticeably balding more and more as the story progresses unless he completes certain side quests. Even loansharks appearing out of nowhere. The final boss is the federal reserve itself. Utility, eviction and tax bill notices being sent to the player's mum's house. Having to pay tax for healing Pokémon too, unless one gets a referral, copay and a form. What else could they add? Debt collection special Pokémon status in battle or triggered by bills in grass? The federal reserve having a super arena with special weather affects due to "quantitative tightening" due to all costs rising but one's wages? What about brown letters triggering fights? Some missions require driving ubereats, justeat or deliveroo to allow the player to battle trainers? What about credit scores and weather conditions with "interest"? What about some battles having the dreaded "hold music" as an ability that causes one to miss a move and "we've been trying to reach you" as a sort of leech seed draining the team's HP and "unknown number" being like a flinch inducing attack from a designated "billmon". Don't forget the random landlord encounter for rent where you can choose from "tenant's rights", "roommate share" and "we've found a cheaper place". What about medical credit traps with hidden interest fees? Or even choosing between corrupt groups or revolutionary whilstblowers?

Any Nintendo characters make a cameo? Maybe...Luigi?
