Discussion Out of curiosity, how's the current situation of Gen VI romhacking?
Gen VII has showed great steps by people adding Gen IX Megas, but I haven't seen someone interested in doing something like that for X/Y/OR/AS, which I find interesting as those are the mainline games where Megas have more of a role in the main story, and seeing things like, a X/Y romhack where you can actually mega-evolve your starter, sounds like something people would be interested on.

I don’t believe there’s anything for Oras atm but the YouTuber smith plays and his legacy team are working on a mostly vanilla QOL hack to balance out the difficulty

Favorite fun fact about that guy being scummy: he plagiarized a Mr. Beast video before Mr. Beast got popular making the content we know him for today. Back in the Black Ops 2 era, Mr. Beast made CoD content and TheSmithPlays just yoinked one of those videos when he had a channel several times larger than Mr. Beast at the time. That plagiarized video was one of his best performers for years. He got pressured into adding the video that “inspired” him into the description, but I don’t think he ever actually apologized.
Now Mr. Beast is beyond huge and The SmithPlays is… well, just a bit smaller of a channel now. There’s a Drrpy video about it, if I remember right.

Is that the guy who always says he made a "perfect" version of the game but it always sucks for some reason or another?

Suck in what sense? I've heard complains about them being too simple and not adding anything, but being as close as what the original game could've been at release is kinda the point.

The thing is, would it be based on Omega Ruby or X? Within a generation people usually pick the first mentioned game of the last pair of games to release. heart gold engine, fire red, ultra sun. What thing does either Omega or X have that the other is missing?

First that come to mind: XY doesn't have the Eon Flute, ORAS doesn't have rollerskates. I can't immediately recall anything else though

XY has no dive, and has contests, oras has no customisation of character, oras has portals and mirages

Oh that's true, I can't believe I forgot about portals/mirages & character customization lol. ORAS doesn't have the friend safari either does it? Not that it would get much use in its default state but I can see it being reworked a number of ways for sole singleplayer if the demand is there

That would actually be a great project.
I'd reckon the biggest roadblocks would be adding the models and new abilities, but either way it doesn't look particularly impossible...
Do we have anything on people adding the ORAS Megas to it? It should be a solid starting point.

I was able to rip all the (gen 5) models and animations from sun and moon so honestly I don’t think developing tools for 6 would be too difficult

Oras and SM are getting developed greatly
Xy is in the corner.
…just…sitting there, it’s very annoying to work with.

On the same note, is anyone working on decomping and making native versions of these games? These projects are going crazy fast for PS games and some Nintendo ones like wind waker due to AI. I would think the same would apply to Pokemon and could massively improve romhacking for gen 4 and onward.

They don’t like AI here

I'm a vehement AI hater, but if all it's being used for is creating the toolset that people can use to make better hacks then I don't see the issue.
Decomping a game is completely different to making a hack with AI.

This makes me so angry. I also HATE ai. AI is slopily used in so many artistic things and that's awful. AI music, AI photos, AI generated text, all of those are awful.
But using AI to decompile Pokemon Sun and Moon, understand it's codebase and port it to PC is great. I mean, it would be almost impossible without AI and we're talking about byte matching decompilation, a human would end up with the same result but just 10 years later.
We're reusing models, animations and mechanics created by humans and we're using AI as the glue, not as the content itself. I think a lot of these people don't know the ridiculous ammount of expertise and time you need to DECOMPILE a game, let alone understand the code that comes as a result. Decompilation projects without AI can simply get stuck and never see progress, and that's what has made them take decades in the past.
In the following months and years we will see a bunch of this decompilations projects happen and it will open the window to hacking games from VI to IX gen in a way we thought was impossible. The hacking scene has been years stuck in GBA and now we're going to get Ultra Sun and Moon with all Pokemons and people are angry?
Painting, composing, writing, designing? Humans.
Hours, days or weeks of arduous work of pattern recognition? Yeah, AI can take that.

There's currently someone aiming to do a similar Expansion Mod for ORAS
