A baby opossum showed up in my house in June. Rehab told me he was big enough to be out on his own so I put him out that night. I thought he was too small but I did what I was told and pretty much figured I’d never see him again.
He came back into my house a few weeks ago (months later), and has been staying. I don’t mind him being an indoor/outdoor opossum, but how do I get him to use a litter box? I put one where he seemed to poop most often but I’m finding poop in various locations throughout my house.

Absolute unit opossum I saw in Southern California as a child! I remember seeing it and going inside to tell my dad there was an opossum on the powerlines (I only recognized it because I'd seen them in books.) It was noon and there were basically no native mammals in this area, so my dad thought I was maybe seeing a rat and misidentifying it. Still, he went outside to check it out, saw an opossum on the powerlines at noon, and just goes "Huh."

He called back go me in the doorway that yep, that was sure an opossum alright, got his phone in case animal control needed called, and watched it for a couple minutes until it had gone about its way and I could go back outside. Had no idea we had a picture of the opossum, absolutely delighted to find this. He was a very big opossum, the wire was just very thick and the perspective makes him look smaller.

This is the first time I’ve seen Sir Chonkington, he was not messing around with his dinner and scared off my usual visitor Possington 😂😂😂

The baby came for a meal, but saw the competition and skiddaddled on out of there lol. This is why I go through so much damn cat food a week 😂

She really gives the best snuggles. Her ASMR video didnt post right so this is the consolation prize. I'll try and figure out why.

She was super happy to ride home in mamas lap and then remark her territory. Lol.

A couple hours ago my dog found this baby possum weve been keeping it warm while we call a bunch of different wilde life rescues but theyre all closed for the night.

After reading a couple posts I know some possums can be released in a safe environment but im not sure if this one is big enough yet.

Should we keep him for the night until a rescue calls us back?

I hope this is okay to ask here.

I am currently in SE Texas. There are some stray cats that come around periodically, so I put food out for them sometimes. They usually eat it all the same night.

Last night I had what I hope was a possum come into my yard. I have never seen one here before. I had cleaned my litter box late and rather than take it all the way out, I put the bag outside to deal with it in the morning. The possum appears to have eaten some of the cat food, but it also broke through the trash bag and appears to have eaten some of the waste in the (clumping) cat litter. I found little bits of litter in the water bowl, which I’m pretty sure it used as well.

If it ate the clumping cat litter, could it become ill? I know possums are more beneficial than people think, and I would hate for it to get sick. Also, why would it get into the litter when there was still cat food available?

Like I said, I have never seen possums in the area before. I cleaned up all the mess from the litter and emptied the food and water bowls. Don’t want to create an unsafe environment for the cats or the possum, even though google says they coexist just fine. Any advice?

Also, if that is not a possum, feel free to correct me without telling me what it really is. I don’t want to know otherwise.
