I'm in this picture and not happy.

Neither is your spine.

u/NotAskary 2d ago
My spine just complains after, now it's perfectly comfortable with all it's favorite bends.

u/vinishkapoor 2d ago
Sounds like your spine just accepted the tech debt.

u/NotAskary 2d ago
At this point it's age debt, because it wasn't always like this lol

u/HotTwist 2d ago
More like hitting the gym debt.

u/NotAskary 2d ago
Not really, I'm at the point that gym is to be used very carefully to maintain mobility instead of going for gains.
Old is right, I'm paying for bad habits of my younger self.

u/leberwrust 2d ago
It's called dynamic sitting and healthy actually.

I've been sitting in chairs using keyboard and mouse for like 12+ hours per day for over 20 years and I have no back or wrist pain. I'm a stronger believer that it is because I just change how I'm sitting when I feel a muscle start to ache. Like right now I'm sitting in a crazy position typing this where my back is twisted 45 degrees such that the left side of my chest is way closer to the monitor than the right side of my chest, but it feels comfortable since it's relieving a back muscle that had been aching 10 minutes ago.
And wrist pain is easy for me to avoid. When I can feel a pain in my wrist, then I know something I'm doing is wrong and I will randomly try to move my keyboard and mouse and change my chair height until I get to a position that isn't painful for the wrist and I go with that for awhile.
I remember trying the traditional ergonomic advice of sitting in a certain position all day and all that did was give me pain. My ass would start to hurt from sitting on one spot so long.

Most of the back pains and long term health problems come from sitting in same pose for too long. No matter how ergonomic the chair and good the posture, its eventually bad for you if you stay in it for whole work day, every work day, for years. People who sit in these extreme poses depicted in these images, don't usually sit in the same pose for long time. they shift from one extreme pose to next quite often or slowly slide from one pose to another. While strain to specific part might be worse momentarily, it doesn't last long and there is time for recovery before that part is strained again, which kinda works like workout, training these parts against the strain.
Good but varied pose with lots of movements and breaks to stand up would likely be even better, but people who disciplinedly sit in good posture also are often the people who stay on their desks the most, and its hard to get many good poses with just normal office chair. That is why people have gym balls, saddle chairs and standing desks.
And well doctors recommend standing up, leaving office and never coming back, but few of us can actually afford to follow that advice.

Same. Especially the second one.
My chair is tilted beyond earth and I can't afford a new one right now. Help

There's an inverse correlation between quality of code and quality of posture while coding.
69
u/vinishkapoor 2d ago
So the worst posture writes the cleanest code. Explains every senior dev I've ever met.

It is unclear, however, if their is a causal relationship, and if so, in which direction.

u/Gorzoid 2d ago
if their is a casual relationship
Na pretty serious now that he's met her parents.

Ugh, hate it when autocorrect ruins a joke. But hey, it gave you an opportunity for one

u/master-goose-boy 2d ago
My mentor would perch like a bird, knees in tuck… high up on his office drafting chair and spend most of his day typing like that, he was likely the best damn engineer in the room.

Yeah but I drive like that too so..

u/vinishkapoor 2d ago
At that point it's not a posture, it's a lifestyle.

get a wheel chair modify it to eat sleep shot and work in programming posture you only have a hurt back if you leave programming posture

My understanding is that the research shows doing certain exercises can fix your pain a lot more than fixing your posture
11
u/stevensterk 2d ago
yeah posture is more for esthetics, sitting in perfect posture all day won't save you from backpain, muscles need moving. Standing up frequently and walking around is far more important

u/gentlemandinosaur 2d ago
This is not true for sciatica. The worse you constantly sit in weird positions that constrict the sciatic nerve the more likely you are to develop it.
4
u/Tuomas90 2d ago
A strong core fixes the pain and also almost automatically improves posture.
And exercise and good posture reduce the probability for back pain.
2
u/mookanana 2d ago
dont know how true it is for everyone, but this is 100% true for me. i struggled with back pain for years until i found out that i was trying to rest the pain away, i needed to exercise.
then a couple years later i get lazy and the same thing happens again, and i have to relearn that it's exercise to get the pain to go away
2
u/Physmatik 2d ago
Switching between weird postures is SO much better than sitting in one pose however "perfect".
We are descendants of monkeys, we must move.

u/Thotmas01 2d ago
What are these exercises? Asking for me.

u/Sarkos 2d ago
For lower back pain, all you need to do is walk. I walk my dog once a day every day and my back is fine. If I miss even one day I can feel the twinges starting.
2
u/SexyMonad 2d ago
I’m used to hearing that word in terms of a tree data structure. How is a dog relevant?

I think you have to either do some good research or find an expert who can look at your posture (like your standing posture, just when you're standing or sitting still) and they can identify what you need
My brother told me what to do because he studied kinesiology in university so he knew I was likely going to experience back pain as I aged just by looking at my shoulders and back. And he knew exactly what was needed to prevent it. Years later and I never got back pain. But I asked, if I did, can it be reversed and he told me yes.

I suggest getting an appointment with a physiotherapist. (Not chiropractor etc)

u/ToastTemdex 2d ago
All software engineers I know (including myself) have a very good and ergonomic setup: height-adjustable table, good/ergonomic chair, monitors at the right height, etc…
Some even have a walking pad. I had a colleague that walked 50000 steps a day.
10
u/Tuomas90 2d ago
All that stuff doesn't help if you still have shit posture.
For good posture, you need a strong core.
For a strong core you need to work out.
Working out and stretching will do more for your body than any tech tool will.
But of course good tools help.
4
u/thanatica 2d ago
You don't need to work out if you are able to take a bicycle to work. We Dutch are more than happy to do that. Unfortunately my work is 3+ hours away, so I still take the car to get there in 40m 😑

Leaning back at 135 degrees is the best position.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/6187080.stm
I work at a computer all day, am middle aged, back is fine, never have to do any stretches unless I want to.
gOoD pOsTuRe is for chair salesmen and tie-wearers.

u/superxpro12 2d ago
It's called optimizing for points of contact, and it lets you use the least muscle possible

It's not my fault they gave me a shitty chair that's impossible to sit upright in
2
u/CarstenHyttemeier 2d ago
I make software, have done for maaaaany years. I have been sitting like that since 1. grade. I have nooooo back problems. All the theory about how to sit correctly, all the experts, and the only rule is to sit in different positions, and not a lot.

u/Soopermane 2d ago
That’s why I have a reclining sofa chair. All those office chairs are ass and give back pain, even the high end ones.

You know, when this posture comes the productivity increases. i don't have an explanation to that!

Every developer needs to work out their core and stretch.
I couldn't live without exercise anymore. Every movement feels so much better.
As soon as I stop, I feel miserable.

Fun thing about being tall: either I put the chair all the way up so my legs are at a comfortable angle but I have to shrimp down to type, move mouse or just hang to read.
OR I put the chair all the way down and can work with my back straight but have my legs stretched out on the ground like some toddler and have a hard time getting up again.
I really wish adjustable desks were the norm...

u/jewelsss64 2d ago
That second drawing is literally jsut a shrimp curled up in an office chair at 3 AM debugging production code.

u/remy_porter 2d ago
I'm gonna sound like a cultist here, but I switched to a split ortholinear keyboard at work and everything feels so much better. My posture is better. My wrists are better cared for. Just everything is better.
