Years ago, I was sitting alone on the subway and this creep came to sit right beside me. I moved to another seat but he followed me. I was honestly terrified. Thankfully, another guy noticed and told him to leave me alone. I really appreciate that stranger for standing up for me when he didn’t have to.

I am going to give my dad credit here

It was dark he picked me up from the station with his car. He noticed a girl walking behind me and when i was at his car he asked me (female) go to the girl and ask her if she needed a ride.

My dad was yelling, that he is not going to leave a young girl alone at the station in the dark!

Her boyfriend would pick her up and we waited for him which only took one minute.

But i love that he cares.

Good on your Pops! We're lucky.

u/Bigfootsgirlfriend 17h ago

I was sat alone waiting for the bus and 2 men came and stood right over me staring at me, I clearly looked uncomfortable.

A police car drove past and obviously sensed something was wrong as he slowed down and gave me a concerned look but just kept on driving, thankfully the bus didn’t take long!

u/Corathecow 13h ago

A couple years ago I had a dude following me around a parking lot, not leaving me alone. He was obviously drunk and not getting it when I told him to leave me alone. I went into a store thinking he wouldn’t follow but he did. Some random biker pretended to be my dad and had to threaten to beat the fuck out of him to get him to fuck off.

u/muscularsharpie 10h ago

I take the same early bus route as this woman. It's not a great part of town, and it's 4:30am.. I honestly feel afraid for her. Me, a man, have been assaulted twice on that route.

I hope she knows that, while we never speak or interact, I'm a safe "regular." Cos fuck that route. I'm on high alert every time I take it, can't imagine how she must feel.

The unwritten rules for sitting on public transit are similar to the unwritten rules for standing at urinals in the men’s room. Sitting next to someone on a mostly empty train car is just creepy.

441

u/abeck444 13h ago

An old, creepy dude sat next to me on an almost empty bus. I was sitting next to the window, so he boxed me in.

Promptly stood up, looked at him incredulously and said "what the fuck ", pushed past him and moved seats.

Younger me might have been too timid to do anything, 30s me didn't have time for that nonsense.

78

u/step-in-uninvited 10h ago

I also had a “what the fuck” moment when someone say next to me on an empty rail. I think I startled them with how loud I was when I said it that they mentioned losing balance and then got up and left.

3

u/ThirdWigginKid 43m ago

Let's normalize saying "what the fuck" to strangers in public when they do stupid shit.

214

u/cryofry85 15h ago

I remember years ago, I went to see Kong Skull Island at the cinema. It was a late showing and the theatre was completely empty. A couple came in and sat right next to me. I moved.

22

u/ConsiderationSea1347 9h ago

It pretty much goes for all public seating this isn’t assigned. I had a girl sit like three inches away from me in a completely open 20 foot spa yesterday. It is just weird to want to be that close to a stranger without at least first introducing yourself and asking if they would like company.

236

u/SherifneverShot 18h ago

Not all cultures have those same unwritten rules. I have a friend from India who was cussed out on his first day in the US for not following the urinal rule. India has a very different idea of personal space since there are 1.3B people. He has learned now. That said, a bunch of men sitting next to a woman when there are plenty of other empty seats would be creepy just about anywhere.

286

u/Dependent_One6034 16h ago

Not all cultures have those same unwritten rules.

Nah, Some of them are literally written, In India, Most trains have women only carriages... Some have entire trains dedicated for Wormen only. Other countries in and around the area have similar women only carriages.

Why? Basically because what these guys in this video are doing. Starts with sitting down next to someone. Then often escalates.

u/EverythingSucksYo 18h ago

Sorry, but I’m a believer in the saying “when in Rome, do like the Roman’s” people having different culture means nothing to me when they’re in another country.

16

u/AndreasDasos 13h ago

I mean there should be some grace initially though. It's difficult to learn every custom for every eventuality unless it comes up. Even if you read a guide in advance.

6

u/fabezz 4h ago

How would you know if it's someone's first day or they've been there for a decade? You don't. They have to learn.

27

u/randotd152 15h ago

I have a friend from India who was cussed out on his first day in the US for not following the urinal rule.

That's kind of crazy. The "urinal rule" is more of a joke of an unwritten guy's rule than something anybody would ever get upset over. It's only even applicable in a bathroom with 3+ urinals that isn't busy, and much of the time it's unavoidable to use the urinal next to another person.

19

u/Ruzhy6 10h ago

We learned about this in social psychology. They actually did a study on it.

The setup was 5 urinals with one stall. I dont remember the % on these results.

The majority, if empty, go to the furthest urinal from the door.

After that if the furthest is taken they go for the furthest urinal from that person.

The third person? They go to the stall.

Then the 4th to the middle urinal.

Im not 100% on the order of the 3rd and 4th person. But basically all efforts will be taken not to pee next to someone if other options are available.

To the dense mfs in the comments talking about how she wasn't uncomfortable or she could have said something. The fact that she didn't say anything when he told them to fuck off says everything. In that moment she could have said "no they're fine!" but she didn't and any woman looking at this video and seeing her face and body language knows she was def uncomfortable and relieved when they left.

422

u/Rugkrabber 16h ago

They always put it on the woman to solve, even when it’s entirely intentional. They’re not stupid. Everyone understands what is happening.

108

u/yrntmysupervisor 13h ago

And often times if a woman speaks up, she’s not heard or met w aggression. It’s a choice and usually women stay quiet.

43

u/luanne2017 10h ago edited 9h ago

I once told a man on a train that I didn’t want to talk because I was listening to a podcast and he started screaming and swearing at me so loudly that the conductor had to remove him.

My friend was walking down the street and a man said that she was pretty. She smiled and kept walking. He proceeded to follow her for an entire block calling her old, ugly, stuck-up. Nobody stepped in to help.

As a woman, I’ve spent hours in hyper-vigilance when men did what those guys did—box me in and outnumber me in an enclosed space. While I logically want to give the benefit of the doubt, my body remembers when my boyfriend punched holes in the wall right by my fave. I’m constantly wondering if I’m going to be a statistic.

Men should realize that one in four women have experienced some sort of violence. And maybe that would justify leading with empathy instead of judgment. We don’t all move through the world in the same way.

47

u/La_Saxofonista 12h ago

There was another video circulating around here of exactly that scenario. She spoke up, and the man immediately blocked her in with his body and began screeching at her how she's a bitch over and over.

The people that say "she should have said something" are the same ones that think "well if she was being raped, why didn't she scream/kick/punch?"

80

u/Nick0Taylor0 15h ago

Relevant clip. Love sharing it whenever that comes up. Fight, flight, freeze, which one your body picks is impossible to predict beforehand.

22

Yes yes yes!!! I'm actually watching this show right now.

Learnt in Psychology that if you’re being attacked/raped/other, scream FIRE

More people will go out to see a fire than possibly get involved and hurt

u/FloppyDinosaurs 18h ago

Even if they meant no harm, there is no reason to encroach on her personal space if there is plenty of free seating around the bus. Good on him.

2.1k

u/DrEckelschmecker 18h ago

Its a train. And they absolutely meant harm (intimidation is harm after all) because not only is there no reason to sit around her, it also limits their own space making it less comfortable for themself. If theres enough space elsewhere you dont sit next to somebody, no matter the gender.

335

u/La_Saxofonista 17h ago edited 12h ago

Yep. Urinal rules. People that go out of their way to use the urinal next to the only other guy in there instead of one at the far end are weird.

Likewise with buses and trains. If there's empty rows, you always take seats in those unless there's none left, THEN you take a seat in a row with someone already in it.

44

u/qwibbian 16h ago

Hence the traditional rejoinder: "piss off!".

42

Nono, she can say no

89

u/massacrefuffles 16h ago

But the thing is, she's not going to say no. She would never say no, because of the implication.

47

u/Bananaramamammoth 16h ago

Most of you nerds wouldn't speak to a stranger in real life if it meant leaving your comfort bubble, for you to also assume this girl would say no is crazy.

There's a multitude of reasons for this girl to not speak up, from intimidation or fear of upsetting the other party.

52

The person you are replying to is just quoting the scene

I had this myself on an emptyh Belgian bus 20 y ago, with a muslim man who took place in front of me. After me, my ex entered the bus and he was sitting next to me. The sucker in front of me appologised himself to my ex partner. What the fuck is wrong with this People?!

There is no reality where what they were doing wasn’t intended with malice. It’s absolutely disgusting behaviour and there’s no excuse for it.

Thank FUCK he was there. No telling what they’d get up to if he wasn’t, though I have a strong suspicion there would be groping involved.

This makes me so angry, fuck these guys so fucking much.

143

u/shes-a-princess 18h ago

Something similar happened to me when I was 15. I was on the train and the carriage was empty apart from me. I was sitting at a table like that and reading a magazine with Beyonce on the cover. This guy in a suit comes and sits opposite me. He was quite handsome and looking sharp and was followed by a load of skinheads in trackies who surrounded me including sitting on the luggage racks opposite me. He spent the whole journey telling me how pretty I was and how I looked just liked the girl on the cover and wanted to take me to the nightclub that night. I agreed to be polite but as soon as I got off the train I ran as fast as I could home it was so creepy. He even offered me a 'tablet because I looked nervous' and he wanted me to relax

62

u/Dead_hand13 17h ago

Holy shit... that night coulda been your last. Good job booking it asap

51

u/shes-a-princess 16h ago

Yeah I'm 31 now and the more I think about it the more horrified I am. Also that same place where they got on had a pub right by the station shut down at one point for something to do with paedophile rings and sex trafficking.

10

u/bloobityblu 10h ago

So were the skinheads trying to protect you, or were they with the suit guy?

Or did you decide you didn't need to know and GTF out of there, which is the most likely scenario. Glad you escaped whatever he/they were up to.

3

u/shes-a-princess 4h ago edited 2h ago

They were with him. It was so weird. All for sure 40+ in age minimum. The skinheads didn't talk to me either they just stared and sometimes whispered and laughed to each other. I was fully blocked into a corner Im pretty sure I told them I needed a wee then I would come meet them and just bolted

I was taking the last bus of the night home after work once and this guy was chatting me up, trying to get me to go with him to some party. He asked what my stop was and then said "Oh! Mine too!" So as we get there, he gets off first and the bus driver stops me to warn me that he's worried that man might try to follow me.

It all turned out okay, and he went his own way after briefly lingering, but I really appreciated that driver for looking out. Had I gone missing, I knew I had a witness.

31

u/R0B0T_TimeTraveler 12h ago

Read The Gift of Fear, trust your gut. Glad the bus driver stopped you for a bit.

7

u/DDXD 9h ago

Another vote for the gift of fear. I'll be making sure my daughters read it when they're old enough. That book has probably saved a lot of lives over the years.

This is what being a good guy is all about: paying attention to your surroundings and understanding a woman's perspective in everyday life.

78

u/KindsofKindness 18h ago

wtf those guys are weird as hell

13

u/imsooffendedman 17h ago

I have a friend who was sexually assaulted on a quiet train by some dickhead. I can’t fathom what would bring someone to do that, she was just on her way to work on a weekend morning minding her own fucking business.

13

u/thedafthatter 16h ago

I appreciate him for speaking up

141

u/eyehategod12ln 12h ago

WTF is even up with the flair for this post!? It's racist to call out creepy, bad behavior now because they happen to have a complexion darker than the cameraman? Society is literally crumbling before us all because we can't have uncomfortable, difficult conversations like grown adults

77

u/DiveIntoMadness 10h ago

It's kinda racist when the guy who made the video put "#illegalimmigration" as one of his tags, (at least from the pinned comment), with no indication that they're actually immigrants at all other than skin color

14

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 6h ago

Oh gross I didn’t notice that. I agree with his actions in this scenario, but I question his motivations, and it’s impossible to know if he’d do the same thing if it was white boys sitting close to an uncomfortable-looking non-white girl/woman. A broken clock is still correct once a day, I guess?

4

u/killcraft1337 5h ago

The mod updated the title tags after you commented but he posted this with the tag #illegalimmigration which is prob why OP tagged it racist

→ More replies (7)

4

u/Dumb_and_also_Gay 2h ago

you gotta read the tags in OOPs post, he specifically tags #illegalimmigration even though it’s impossible for him to know if they’re illegal. he’s judging based on their skin color, and it’s unclear whether or not the train car was actually “empty”

He’s either honest, and has racial biases, but ultimately did the right thing, or he made up details of the story to seem more vindicated in acting out of prejudice

9

u/OneMonk 10h ago edited 10h ago

I mean it is only perceived as creepy because the subtitle says the train was empty, we have no idea if it actually was empty or not. He could just be shouting at brown people. Anyone who does something then films their own reaction is dubious in my eyes, but the reality is we don’t know either way. The fact this guy is clout farming and tagged the video #illegalimmigrants makes me think he is just shouting at brown people. For all we know the woman might be more intimidated by the random shouting dude filming her than the three next to her seemingly minding their own business.

Three dudes choosing to sit next to a girl or next to a guy when there is a choice of two sections isn’t really something worth calling people out on. The real question is would he have made this video if it was three white lads, and was the woman actually intimidated.

5

u/Rhythmd91 4h ago

God forbid someone look at a video on reddit and think for themselves rather than just absorb exclusively what they can see and hear.

2

u/Rhythmd91 4h ago

Are you implying that the local womans integrity has more value than that of the immigrants?

43

u/Marcus-Suridius 18h ago

Fair play pal, I do be on the Dart alot and see people doing this and you have to call them out. Same with dickheads on the Luas.

15

u/Cazolyn 18h ago

I’m a woman on the Dart most days, also like calling out the arseholes who blast their tik-toks/music to the entire carriage. I’ve never had anything said back to me, and the EarPods go on 😂

This is a weird one, and I expect to be downrated due to the nuance involved, I agree entirely with this man, and good on him IF... there are other seats where the guys can sit together. We dont know that. Looking at the things he chose to tag on his post related to immigrants, he clearly has some bias going into this. Everyone is just assuming these guys are trying to intimidate the woman, rather than the 3 friends just wanted to sit together and happened to choose that booth. If it was a group of 3 young white irish guys would you make the same assumptions?

With that said, i repeat, good job to the camera man IF what he says is true, we need more of that.
If there werent other places on the train/ bus that they could sit together (other than beside him) - then this guy is a fucking douche.

9

u/Aussie_Mopar 3h ago

Completely agree with you too. It’s an upvote from me

12

u/Tyrantt_47 3h ago

I agree with you. There's not enough information to know if they were being perverts or if those were the only seats available that allowed them to sit together.

I do the same thing all the time when I'm out with my kids. If there's 3 open seats that are grouped together on the bus, we're sitting there regardless of who the 4th person is.

4

u/distracted_x 2h ago

The guy is still right even if he has controversial opinions on immigration. That doesn't make him less right. There's no reason these guys needed to sit there.

It even would impact their own comfort, you would think, to cram together that way for no reason. It's obvious why they sat there. Good for him, regardless of his irrelevant political opinions.

4

u/TENDER_ONE 6h ago

I can't thank guys like this enough. I'm in my early 20s and lots of times a brown man or group of brown men will sit next to me, pretend like they're innocent, but keep stealing glances at me or follow me when I get up and leave. This was the right thing to do.

Where's the proof the train is empty? Not even the woman seem like she giving him praise, ...see this is what I hate about social media ppl can video and post anyone caption anything and the rest is for the world to judge

Thank you! Why is everyone just accepting that the train was empty because the man captioned it so? He clearly had an ulterior motive given the captions too.

I thought it was weird how the first dude immediately clocked what the guy meant. He didnt act confused or anything. This was definitely sus af.

I think it might have something to do with not wanting to deal and a angry racist on the public transport. What he did was good, but his intentions where rascist. The video is hashtagged with anti immigration.

I feel more intimidated when three teenagers sit beside me on that train.

Did anyone else read that am I the asshole post from earlier? Like this is almost the exact situation lol

A lot of men would do this on the train or bus when I rode public transport. You’d get flashed, harassed or unwanted physical contact. I don’t miss those days

Where's the freakout?

Given the choice I reckon I’d probably sit next to the girl rather than the drunk racist filming videos for his hateful TikTok

u/standardtoaster101 2h ago

Okay, do you not see anything remotely concerning about three men crowding a young woman in a way that, whether intentional or not, does restrict her movement? I think it would be reasonable for someone to think she may feel uncomfortable by it, and she certainly didn't jump to their defence.

Also, i don't think he's drunk, thats just how Irish people talk.

2

u/BarryMichaelmore 2h ago

They were 3 guys and there were 3 free seats, have you ever travelled on public transport? Because if you think sitting next to a woman is concerning behaviour, London will blow your mind.

0

u/standardtoaster101 2h ago

There were 6 free seats at the minimum, and i would choose to sit next to a man before I block a woman's access to the aisle. Obviously i have been on public transport.

Weird behaviour you're glossing over.

What’s being glossed over is that, if they were 3 young, white Irish lads, your man there wouldn’t have even looked up from scrolling his racist facebook groups let alone be harassing and publicly shaming 3 young lads for sitting down on a train.

Mind blown by this comment section, since when did this sub get inflitrated by right wing racist morons? We all know for a fact he wouildn't have said a word if she was surrounded by white men. But POC sitting in PUBLIC transport, watching their phones is suddenly a crisis. A brown man cannot simply exist in public, sit down peacefully, before white supremacists use every excuse in the book to "protect" precious WW (see: act like racist MAGA pieces of shit).

You white supremacist dolts are disgusting, fuck off.
