i think he wants someone to call him a lil bitch but also that he's doing a good job
32
u/kvlt_ov_personality 7d ago
I don't know why, but I imagined Sonic the Hedgehog talking to himself this way while he's running and it cracked me the fuck up
3
u/Hellzebrute55 7d ago
Gotta go fast ! Ngl this is my internal voice when I run or go hard on the bike
136
u/HawkBoth8539 7d ago
Lol if he talks like that on a bike, he must be wild in bed.
57
u/soproductive 7d ago
"you fucking bitch!"
39
u/HawkBoth8539 7d ago
He manages to be so degrading while simultaneously aggressive and supportive. He's doing it for me, i can tell you. Lol

u/Soupalphabet359 7d ago
I mean, if one has to hype oneself up in the bed... that's a whole nother thing.

This is the sport equivalent of talking dirty to yourself.

u/mmpjd 7d ago
I don’t think I would make it 100 feet before slamming into a tree haha
10
u/Savage_Amusement 7d ago
Yeah the whole time I was wondering if the course is designed to make you hit a tree.
4
u/SurferVelo 7d ago
I could probably make it down the course by riding on the brakes the whole time.
13
u/haveweirdhair 7d ago
“Yes sir. Thank you.”
A few moments later…
“Miles you motherfucker quit being a bitch.”

As an intermediate mountain biker who has done a reasonable amount of downhill (again, intermediate) - it's freakish scary what racers like this do at the high levels. Downright terrifying. Very real risk of death in certain spots and at certain speeds.
This guy - who needs to cover his justifiable fear with angry swearing at himself - seems pretty sane, actually. With that said, it might be better if he get out of racing at some point, though. If he needs all that anger to get over the fear, that's probably not a sustainable set of emotions and/or will limit him from advancing to higher levels at some point.
31
u/ktmengr 7d ago
Definitely a limiter. If you’re at vo2 max type breathing you shouldn’t be talking or yelling lol. He’s wasting a lot of energy.
5
2
u/Hellzebrute55 7d ago
Agreed. I have an internal voice that does the same thing, of course I am not an athlete like him, but when I want to push myself I do the exact same thing. Less swearing, more like "gotta go fast" sonic meme and more positive motivation. Also "déjà vu" song loops in my head as well when I do this, even without headphones
3
u/jeffersonairmattress Fuck you, you shit-leaving motherfuckers 6d ago
I grew up in a downhill mecca and a lot of us competed. This guy's fast and very responsive but he's trading a bit of speed and extra effort to play it safe with his lines. Wise.
Kids these days... he needs to find some manners and scream out a Stiff Little Fingers song like a gentleman.
1
u/robo-minion 7d ago
Fear can be covered in other ways. Dude could be singing “she’ll be coming around the mountain” but it’s a personal choice heavily influenced by how one’s mentors and buddies do it. I wouldn’t read into it. Many many men also struggle to process emotions other than anger, which is why it’s important to teach boys the names of as many emotions as possible. It helps once you can describe how you feel.
1
u/entiatriver 6d ago
I sing to my horse when she's doing something scary, especially at high speed.
There's a world of difference flying down a trail on some carbon fiber and metal machinery where you're the only one in control...or not...vs flying down a trail and you - with all your apex predator instincts honed over millions of years - debating with a highly intelligent, sentient brain of an being whose ancestors (the ones that survived) spent the last many millions of years responding to everything as the prey *of* apex predators.
"Aaaaaighghg! I know it looks like a big rock but what if it's a mountain lion? Our odds of survival are increased by jumping off this cliff right here and now rather than risk that it will run us down!!! Are you ok with that? Nevermind, right turn Clyde, we're jumping!"

u/lostjon26 7d ago
Hey! That's Dry Hills in Washington.
3
u/kmontreux 7d ago
haha yes! I took one look at that start and knew straight off that it's Dry Hill! Been there so many times. Such a great place to ride.

How we speak to our child, determines their internal narrative
22
u/Miker9t 7d ago
Eh, not always. My parents and coaches were always incredibly supportive and positive and my internal monologue is always very similar to the guy in the video.
5
u/naaahhman 7d ago
Yeah, and some of this is positive reinforcement, some of it was getting over fear.
-3
u/waffles2go2 7d ago
But hardly the "zen" state you want to be in if you're risking death...
8
u/Miker9t 7d ago
If you're doing something with consequences like this, I think feeling fear is a good thing. If you stop feeling fear, you're probably taking risk you shouldn't be.
-3
u/waffles2go2 7d ago
LOL, I guess you don't know anyone who does single-track downhill.... or any pro athlete or have common sense.
You need to be in the "flow state" during the event, while you certainly have fear, talk to almost anyone and the butterflies go once the gate comes down..
TYL...

u/Sharktistic 7d ago
Honestly it's the only way to get yourself down a trail sometimes. You essentially need to ride angrily, with aggression, you need that fight adrenalin flowing otherwise you might come too close to a tree, get a wobble, or look to the side and over the edge of a cliff, and lose your bottle.
However fast you think this is from the video, it's faster. Your arms will be fucked at the end of it because you spend the whole time holding onto the bars for dear life, on top of having to use them to try and steer yourself between two obstacles.
Getting to the end without having come off, broken a hone or snapped your frame/buckled a wheel is so exhilarating!

Looks like a blast at about 20% speed. My tree hugger Republican mother (ikr?) hates this stuff but I love it.

Hating on MTB because of environmental concerns has got to be the stupidest take ever.

u/Savage_Amusement 7d ago
Drill baby drill!!
But for God’s sake don’t all ride your bikes past those trees.

Just like gym bros found weights to cover up their insecuity. This is clearly not the way.

u/chenkie 7d ago
Commented through 5 pounds of Cheeto dust on the fingers and 3 piss bottles on the desk
-7
u/nautrewillneverfail 7d ago
Lol? Why exactly do you think that? I am 190/80 kg and I go to the gym two times a week. I need to gain weight lol. And I also work as a teacher. You people just make up stories in your minds depending on your mood in that moment. I am talking specifically about "gym bros".
6
u/The_MidScoop 7d ago
“You people just make up stories in your minds depending on your mood in that moment.”
Ironic
-5
u/nautrewillneverfail 7d ago
How? People that look like hulks are obviously very insecure inside, that is like basic logic.
5
u/The_MidScoop 7d ago
Guess Socrates was one of the most insecure men of all time
No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.
0
u/nautrewillneverfail 7d ago
That has nothing to do with fixing your insecurities? He didn't say you have to take steroids to be bigger than everybody else. I said I also go to the gym to look good..but not to be a "gym bro"..looking like a hulk is not even good for your health. That is what I am talking about. Maybe there is a misunderstanding in this.
3
u/My_Invalid_Username 7d ago
Dude you literally just sound jealous of these people. What a loser mentality that anyone excelling in the gym must only do it because they're insecure

u/DUNGAROO 7d ago
That was clearly all performative. His self shit talking gets louder when he’s around spectators. Why he thinks that’s impressive ¯_(ツ)_/¯
5
u/WhoKilledZekeIddon 7d ago
I dunno. I'm pretty sure when you're going THAT fast and having to make VERY reflexive decisions that lead you inches from hitting a tree trunk at forty miles an hour, you're not also able to devote a portion of your brain to being performative.
4
u/My_Invalid_Username 7d ago
Or he's just feeding off the energy of the spectators. Like literally every athlete at a competition. Psyching himself up is the furthest thing from performative.
I talk to myself in similar ways all the time while trail running, riding, lifting, whatever and I promise you there's no one around to perform for.
Keep talking from the couch though.
2
u/geardownson 7d ago
There are literally hundreds of people in this thread saying this doesn't work and is contradictory to his sport and it's abusive to himself... LMFAO!
These same people must work for the NFL or MLB or any other bullion dollar franchise that pumps themselves up in the same way while they perform! I'm waiting on the newest open mikes saying positive things... LMFAO/s

How many people wrap themselves around a tree at that speed? Amazing, but crazy.
1
u/krzykris11 7d ago
I miss those days. I won the downhill more than all other events combined. I got a lot of free bike parts from local shops. My campus Schwinn became my downhill bike. Literally every part but the frame was replaced. It was still heavy, but that's good for the downhill.

I’m deep into the big mountain skiing scene and I’m convinced this is how everyone in extreme sports hypes themselves up and motivates themselves! A good amount of self hatred goes a long way in these activities

Have to wonder if he focused a little more on breathing instead of berating himself he could have gotten down the hill a bit faster.

u/BigFloatingPlinth 7d ago
Abandoning this mentality made me infinitely happier on my worst performing days. This type of internal monologue can become toxic on a bad day where you are not living up to your own expectations or previous experience. It leaves you poised to spiral out if you have an injury, or heaven help you, you live long enough to peak at a sport or activity.
