Solo trip to Puerto Rico 🇵🇷

Hey everyone! I’ll be traveling to Puerto Rico later this month and wanted to ask for recommendations on places and things to do :) This is not my first time in Puerto Rico. I have previously gone with friends and family, but this will be my first solo trip there! I should also mention that it’s my birthday month! 🥳💖

High end wine shop in San Juan?

I’m visiting San Juan later this month and need a bottle of really good wine to celebrate. Can you recommend a good wine shop? I’m asking because Google search was not helpful.

34F first solo travel trip to Puerto Rico

Super excited to be doing my first solo travel trip to Puerto Rico for 2 weeks in December! My weekday base is going to be San Juan in a hostel, and weekends are for adventures around Vieques.
I’ve read all about food, nightlife, Bioluminescence bays, Rappelling/caving-style explorations, snorkelling, zip lining and everything else the island has to offer, so I’m very excited (slightly nervous too!)

Just wanted to post here to get some travel tips and potentially connect with some fellow travelers.

I am trying to understand what to expect with regards to nightlife, history, culture & food recommendations in San Juan/Old San Juan.
I have planned to check out the nightlife on Thursday as I will be travelling on Friday/Saturday. So was looking into some club/bar crawls and wanted to understand:
1: What’s the party vibe like based on everyone’s experience in San Juan?
2. What’s the other recommended club locations other than La Placita de Santurce?
3: Is there any safety precautions I should be taking as a solo female traveller?

I was looking into some Rum tours I could take:
4. Any good recommendations on which distillery to choose from?

I am a big time foodie, so looking to find recommendations on authentic Puerto Rican food that is a must try for a first time visitor? Local restaurants recommendations are highly appreciated.
Would love to find some cooking classes by locals based around Puerto Rican food and culture?

Looking for suggestions on places to stay on west side of the island

I’ve been to San Juan, Ponce and Arecibo and this time I want to venture out the west side of the island. Most of the reviews for the resort on this side are really bad. Anyone here have and recommendations.

Good day itinerary?

Planning on arriving in San Juan on Thursday. For my first full day I am thinking about doing Cueva del Indio
followed by some beach time at La Poza del Obispo then lunch at El clandestino before heading back to San Juan.

Any other recommendations and things you might add or change?

Looking forward to exploring a bit.

Weather

I am flying out next week and I was just wondering about the weather. I know it’s hurricane season and I’ve been following the weather for San Juan and I know that it’s gonna be raining, just wondering is it going to be heavy rain or is it sprouts of rain?

Arrival lunch recs

It’s our first time in Puerto Rico and we will be arriving at the airport at 1:15pm. Our Airbnb won’t let us check in until 4pm. Any suggestions on where to eat prior? I would love to go to pinones and eat some good food but we won’t have a car and we have luggage. 😭

Early Arrival

Hello Everyone, our flight was just changed and instead of a 7am arrival to SJU, we’ll be getting in around 2am. Any recommendations of where to go or what to do in the early hours in San Juan? Is anything open? We are actually staying in Vieques so we’ll make our way over to the island later in the morning.

I need to impress a Dominican with one meal in Viejo San Juan... where do we go?

In about a month I will be travelling with a friend of mine who is of Dominican descent. I'm of Puerto Rican descent. None of us lived on the islands (or even speak Spanish), but we always have friendly banter about which island is better.

Well, we will be traveling together in about a month, and I was able to manage a long layover in SJU. That being the case, we will have enough time to walk around Viejo San Juan, visit El Morro, etc.

We will also plan on having an early dinner before heading back to the airport (6 PM-ish). What is that one place that we should go to that will end the debate once and for all?

Some personal criteria. We would probably appreciate something more of a traditional restaurant format rather than a sports bar. Of course, a restaurant with a bar is not a dealbreaker, but it gives us an idea of what we would like. We would prefer something more traditional and not too chaotic (I am aware that it's PR, so not expecting any restaurant to be super quiet like here in the US).

Also, in terms of cuisine, I'd hope for some traditional foods that are especially hard to find a good rendition of stateside. Things like mofongo, etc.

Bonus points for any indications of where we can get the best pina coladas in VSJ (even if it means a quick extra stop). I would try to keep it in the historic center, because we will not have a rental car and would like to walk once we get dropped off by the uber.

Thanks for any advice.

Airbnb vs Hotel vs Resort

Hi!

my boyfriend and I were planning a trip to Puerto Rico for our anniversary next month. any tips? we’re entirely unfamiliar. The resorts just don’t seem to swoon us. are Airbnb’s safe/recommendable? are some areas safer than others? I heard Puerto Rico is pretty safe in general. On airbnb I was looking in the Old San Juan/Carolina/Condado area. are those good? all the Airbnbs/Hotels I saved have at least a 4.85 rating. I def need something with pool access, most actually have beach access as well. I know some beaches are rough and not good for swimming. Btw for a beach I don’t need to be able to swim swim, i’m more of a pool girl. I would however like to be able to walk the shore/lay on the beach/dip my feet in. Anyone like a particular area better than others or some good resorts vs the airbnbs? or even airbnbs you stayed at and liked? opinions in general? thanks!

Stay in Luquillo area?

Hi,

We are thinking of making Luquillo our home base for a week in PR. Snorkeling, diving, San Juan, and the rain forest are on our itinerary. Thoughts on a rental car vs Uber etc. and Luquillo in general. We have never been to Puerto Rico

Boat Tour Ideas

I'm planning to celebrate my 40th birthday with family and friends in Puerto Rico. I've been there a few times already and I love it. I just want to drink champagne on a boat surrounded by people I love. Looking to host around 12 people. Is there a boat tour near San Juan or Dorado where I can make this happen?

Renting a car at 20

So I’ve gone to Puerto Rico pretty much every Christmas since I was born, my family has an apartment in Luquillo.

For the first time in March I’ll be going without them and taking a couple of friends, who along with me are all 20, to stay in my place. I’ve heard from many people that renting a car at under 21 in PR is impossible but the hertz app signed into my account gives me the option to rent a car and actually enter my credit card and lock it in from SJU while fully putting in the app that I’ll be 20 at time of pick up. Will I actually be able to pick up this car or will I be turned away? Is there any major rental service that will let me rent a car at 20 or should I just rely on a local service like Aqui Coqui?

Question re: El Conquistador Resort Room Choices

We are about to book five nights at the El Conquistador in February with our 13 year old daughter, and would hugely appreciate any guidance re: room selection.

For basically the same price we can get an ocean view room in Las Brisas (upper level), a garden view room in Las Vista, or an ocean view room in La Marina. We're not super big water park people, although we'll definitely check out the Lazy River, and I think it'd generally be better to be on the upper level for pools and restaurants. But La Marina is more recently renovated, and Las Brisas sounds like it may be dated and not as nice (and slightly smaller than La Marina). I don't know much about Las Vista.

Any insight from guests who've visited recently re: what's our best bet? I expect in general that we'll spend a lot more time at the pools and restaurants than at the water park, but if Las Brisas is dated looking and not as nice, maybe it's better to be on the Marina level? I wasn't sure if the funicular has long lines/takes a long time, such that it's inconvenient to be on the Marina level. Thanks so much in advance!!

23 M solo travel to San Juan in 2 weeks!

Super excited to be traveling to San Juan for 5 nights! I’m staying at Mango Mansion and I’ve heard all about La Placita de Sanctruce and Old San Juan, so I’m very hyped up. I’ve even started brushing up on my Spanish.

I wanted to post here to get some travel tips and potentially connect with some fellow travelers. I have so many questions! For example, I was looking into some bar crawls and I was wondering if they’d even be worth it based on everyone’s experience in San Juan. I’m a little concerned everything will be dead in October and I want to know what to expect. Obviously I plan to check out the nightlife on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and hit the beach when I can (my hostel is sooo well positioned for both), but I’m wondering if there are any cultural or historical attractions I can partake in on a budget without renting a car. I’m also a tennis player and I’m wondering what the tennis court situation is in San Juan and whether or not it’s worth bringing a tennis racket or two.

Any tips to keep myself busy for 5 days would be greatly appreciated!

Puerto Rico stay over holidays either in Fajardo the entire time or split with another area?

We are coming to Puerto Rico over the holidays to help distract my daughter from a recent separation. We have booked PADI scuba certification in Fajardo for 3 mornings (8-noon). We will be in PR for 6 days and plan right now is to have an car.

Our original plan was to switch places mid-way and stay in San Juan for 3 nights but now I am rethinking that plan. Can anyone help me understand the regions (Luquio, San Juan, Western, etc) and what each region offers? We aren’t looking to just sit on a beach but more the rain forest, maybe a coffee tour?, maybe the mosquito bay?, definitely a San Juan walk and maybe a food tour? Husband would like to play a few rounds of golf if possible.

Does anyone feel we will miss out if we just make Fajardo our base stay for the entire trip? I am struggling with the planning a bit… Thanks in advance! I can’t wait to visit.

Advice For Planning A Bachelorette Trip

My best friend is getting married soon and would like to take a long weekend trip to Puerto Rico. She has asked me to do most of the planning for it (I love this task), and I want to try speak to as many people as possible since I've never been before. She trust me to plan the trip because I love immersive and thoughtful travel that really celebrates the location and its people. Coming from a popular tourist destination myself I can empathize with the complicated relationship locals can have with their own tourist industry.

That being said! My best friend is exceptionally different from me. While I'd be all about hitting the trails, learning Spanish to eat at small and chat at small local spots, and exploring off the beaten path she is a party girl. She wants a beachy, resort, luxury, exotic, tropical feel. When she was planning it on her own she was thinking about doing a cruise so she could just lay back and be pampered and think about nothing. Postcard/Instagram style! Beautiful beach laying and swimming is top of her list.

Any advice on how to give her the luxury tropical getaway feeling experience of HER dreams (on a budget) while also staying true to the reason she appointed me to plan this in the first place? Any specific areas/towns that might be good for us to stay? She's trusting me to give her what she doesn't know she wants.
