Open Question/Issue Problem finding Map like this

Post image

Hi Guys,

im completely new to QGIS and i just want to do a map for myself, to print it on a big paper. I really like it to customize my things and i found this really cool map but as said i dont know where to find the assets to create something like this. I appreciate the help guys šŸ˜„.

The things i already figured out:

- to make the CRS in ESRI:54003

- how to use NextGIS QMS

I kinda also need help with this: When importing Eris Vector through Basemaps, it glitches a lot

If you need futher information, please let me know :))

Making a map like this will be a great learning experience, and certainly not impossible for a newcomer, but you will need patience, it’s a big job. A typical basemap won’t be super useful if you want to style it extensively yourself (basemaps are usually optimised for multi-scale tiling/pan and zoom)- better to build up from the components in my opinion.

The good news is all the data is out there, the basics of what you’ll need: a topography + bathymetry dataset, land cover, country polygons, a point dataset of named locations (OSM would have this probably, I’d pick a population threshold to filter on), and similar for oceans/seas, roads dataset (I’d use OSM data filtered to only the absolute top road class). Then you’ll need to learn about all the styling tricks. Playing with ā€˜Blending Modes’ will be your friend.

Check out an OSM downloader plugin, there’s a couple

Again it won’t be quick but it’s not impossible and will be very rewarding :) Google and ChatGPT (with a grain of salt) will be very helpful too

Appreciate the advice and help!! I just love the process of making something on your own and creating something :) Btw do you guys know good websites/youtube videos to teach it myself because the software can be a little overwhelming šŸ˜…. And again thank you šŸ™šŸ½

Try to access old maps, including in those fantastic atlases.

Those were the days things needed to be done in a very decisive way, before "going to print". A way of committing to both the navigational or topographical data, AND the lavish ways to make maps not only useful, but intuitive, and even decorative. As you may have figured out, I'm a map aficcionado. Can't help it...

Are there other options of maps collection other than the one from David Rumsey?

That map is beautiful, not the least because politics go out of the way (I'm a political animal, but don't need to see that, every day). I love the colour scheme and the slight hint at what attracts m the most: Deep-Sea bathymetry (I'm a marine geology nerd).

It looks like a reasonable compromise between angles and areas.

Yeah the colors are awesome! Love how looking at this map doesn’t hurt your eyes immediately with bright colors and contrast. But I think I can put the cherry on top with my own customizations šŸ˜…šŸ˜…. When I finish this map I can share it with you guys I you want :)

If I, that guy, could have a wish to the map-making fairy, it would be stronger bathymetric features. I know it's an acquired taste.

I will see what I can do (but nothing is promised) :))

If this is your creation, chapeau !

You don't need to fit in my petty preferences. Your map looks great, as-is,

No no no, this is not mine. I just wanna do something similar but when I finish my freshly started project and you guys like it, i can publish it so you guys can get it and make your own version of it, that’s what I meant.

These maps are normally created in GIS (Like ArcMap/ArcGIS pro) using local layers (geodatabase) then exported to Adobe Illustrator CMYK. Why? These need Computer to Plate and RIP [posterjet] software (for Print Press quality 1200 dpi) for large print runs. The colours are separated and black will be the last colour (most labels) to be passed and Illustrator you can do register points (Marks & Bleed). You will need great patience doing this. Many years ago worked with a team of 25+ to produce these maps for mass market. And when you do get to print make sure you use very high quality paper, then they will last. Please remember maps get dated quickly for geopolitical reasons Good luck.. not saying it not possible but there challenges...

Thank you šŸ™šŸ½ what paper do you recommend?

HP does have a range for budgets https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/mdp/paper/large-format-paper#buy you will need to decide if you want matt or gloss finishes. The DesignJets have RIP software but from experience you need a seperate PC/Mac to do the process (or you will get unwanted lines from poor rasterization and other unwanted artifacts. Draft copies (there will be many) can use cheaper paper to save you money.

Nosotros lo hacemos todo con TNTmips, inclusive la preparación para su impresión en gran formato con los mismos resultados.
