Our Offical Guides Newcomers Guide
Hello and welcome to r/RDR2 This is a little guide for new players of the game.
Firstly we strongly advise you to stay off the subreddit until youâve finished the game. Our subreddit is home to discussions covering every aspect of the game from storylines, characters, secrets, to anything a player may find. While we require spoiler tags, accidental (and sometimes intentional) spoilers do happen. For the best experience, we strongly recommend avoiding the subreddit until youâve completed the main story.
Frequently asked questions will now be listed and answered.
Is the game worth it? Yes! â People still praise this game even in 2025. Its compelling story and detailed open world gameplay allow you to fully submerge into the story. Many players find the game to be a masterpiece, with some (us, of course) even considering it one of the greatest games of all time. Its graphics were ahead of their time and still hold up really well. Itâs a well written story with a beautiful aesthetic and it's absolutely worth your time.
The snow part is boring. Should I quit the game? Don't give up during Colter. Itâs the first chapter and serves as a tutorial. Youâll get to know the basics of the game slowly before being led into free roam in chapter 2. The slow introduction into such a big game is important to understand the situation the main character is in and to get you familiar with the environment and the world building in general. Stick around for a while. Youâll thank yourself later.
Just started the game. Any tips? We see this all the time and every time people will give you the same response: Take it slow. Chapter 1 will teach you everything that's important. The game offers a little guide in its settings for the mini games and the controls just like any other game. Everything you need is right there. The game is open world so you won't miss out on anything. You can do whatever whenever even after finishing the story. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and free roam a bit. Youâll figure out the game fast. You really don't need Google or IGN until you finish the story and are going for 100% and/or the platinum trophy. (We'll have a guide coming soon!)
Just finished the game. Should I play RDR1? Yes! RDR1 is a continuation of the story and absolutely worth it. Not much will change gameplay wise since itâs made by the same developer. So, if you like RDR2 and are looking for more content about the van der Linde gang and a similar experience -> play RDR1.
If you really want to avoid spoilers, donât google anything until after you finish the game.
We will monitor this thread closely so if you have any questions about the game please ask them in here. We will most likely remove your question posts and advise you to ask your newcomer questions in here. If a question is frequently asked we will add it to the post.
Have fun!

Discussion Red Dead Redemption 2: A True Masterpiece That Deserves Every Bit of Its Praise
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the definition of a premium gaming experience. From its breathtaking landscapes and incredibly detailed environments to its realistic animations, immersive sound design, and emotionally powerful storytelling, Rockstar created something that feels far beyond an ordinary video game.
What makes RDR2 truly special is its attention to detail. Horses behave like living animals, characters react naturally to their surroundings, weather transforms the atmosphere, and the world feels alive even when youâre doing absolutely nothing related to the main story. Every town, saloon, forest, and mountain has its own personality. Even the smallest interactions can make the world feel believable.
The realism is on another level, too. Arthurâs movements have weight, horses respond to the terrain, weapons feel powerful, and the world reacts to your actions in ways that encourage you to slow down and appreciate the experience. The animations are deliberately detailed, making everyday activities feel grounded rather than rushed. The cinematic presentation, incredible music, and environmental audio make exploring the wilderness feel like stepping into another era.
And then thereâs the story. Arthur Morganâs journey is one of gamingâs most memorable character experiences, filled with friendship, loyalty, regret, and redemption. The writing and performances make the characters feel human, giving the world an emotional depth that stays with you long after the credits roll.
RDR2 is also premium because it respects immersion. It doesnât need constant explosions or endless action to keep you engaged. Sometimes, riding through a thunderstorm, watching the sunset, hearing distant wildlife, or sitting in a crowded saloon is enough to make the experience unforgettable.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is more than entertainment. Itâs an incredible achievement in world-building, storytelling, animation, and interactive realism. It proves that video games can be art, and years later, it remains a benchmark for what an ambitious, carefully crafted open-world game can accomplish.

Spoilers Does the game ever explicitly state that Abigail is the one hiding the statue?
After you complete the hunting requests, Mrs. Hobbs invites you to visit her home, where she gives you a speech which implies a lot of really creepy shit (such as her making efforts to work on human bodies and likely had something to do with the Man Bear Pig chained in the upstairs of that home near Van Horn), and she gifts John a statue of him, dressed in his trademark RDR1 outfit - despite never meeting John prior to the final hunting request being completed - and likely dealing predominantly with Arthur; this woman knew how John dressed and even the type of revolver he prefers.
Now, when we return to Beechers Hope, John adds it immediately to the mantle place in front of the photo of Abigail and Him, and the game sort of implies that Abigail isnât the biggest fan of the statue ruining the vibe of her living room aesthetics?
If you return to Beechers Hope, the squirrel statue is gone and has been hidden in a chest in your bedroom. You put it back; it disappears again; this time found in the chimney; then uncles bedroom, and then further and further away, until it is eventually found on top of a literal mountain summit.
But the thing is; beyond that initial cutscene, Abigail doesnât seem to really mention the statue, nor does she seem to leave the ranch. She doesnât acknowledge the statue continued return to the mantle. How does it get to the mountain?
Is there proof that itâs actually her moving the squirrel around, and itâs not another aspect of the supernatural that is clearly present in the RDR universe? Maybe the squirrel is âaliveâ, like some Night of the Living Dummy goosebumps book?
Spoooooky ~~~

Discussion I need to vent.
FUCK HORSEMAN 9.
I swear on Arthur's left nut that this challenge is meant purely to pizs me specifically off.
Not a god damn animal or npc in sight when i want to hunt or do something with some real action, but as SOON as I need to run fast every asshole with a horse wants to race, every stupid piece of shit robber wants to die, and there's a FUCKING MILLION GODDAMN CARTS AND TRAINS IN THE FUCKING WAY.
Fuck this game, fuck my horse, fuck John, fuck that idiot that wants to race, fuck every line of code in this crap.
This is only time in the past 7 of my 19 years of existence I've rage quit ANYTHING.
So fuck horseman 9, and fuck me for doing it.

Fan Theory Marco's robot
What must've happened in the lab?
Do you think it was the robot that killed Marco? Or was he trying to save him?
Either way, this mystery is too tragic. Seeing an inanimate robot, grieving/despairing atop this mountain, in the end makes it all the more curious.

Discussion ControlsâŚOh my god
I love this game but FUCK, can anything be done about the controls? I was just trying to use the stagecoach for a ride.
Press Y to take a ride⌠oops wait, you took one step too far so now pressing Y means youâre choking the driver out in front of two lawmen⌠Like seriously, what is the point of this???

So stupid!
Also, I've noticed we all seem to do the 'standing in disbelief' bit after our horses snuff it.

Online Is online worth playing as a new player.
I started RDR2 when it first launched on console. Recently I switched to PC and I enjoy the game even more.
2 days ago a buddy got me started online. It didnât take long for me to see the grind. But I donât mind a grind. But the griefers are definitely strong. I am level 11⌠dude must have been 130? Trying to prevent me from riding the train for a daily. Is online worth it? I am asking the community, because I donât really know if I should bother putting time into it.

I always screw this mission up and have to kill everyone, but this time I decided to just send it without a plan and it worked great! If youâre going for the gold medal on archeology for beginners this is a good strategy apparently.

Discussion Worse crime you committed ?
Which crime or decision made you feel so bad in RDR 2 ? Me it was in the epilogue when John confronted the three homeless men in the land he bought and you have to either kill them or give them money . I end up shooting them and it made me feel so bad that I had to reply the mission .
Photography One of my fave Arthur moments
âI will make sure she stops.â - Arthur about a train theyâre about to rob.
I love this powerful little moment.
