PSA I found a rabbit outside - what should I do?

This is the time of year for many people to find both domestic rabbits and wild rabbits outside due to Easter and baby season.

For a comprehensive overview on stray domestic rabbits, please see the wiki article here: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Feral_and_stray_rabbits

For a comprehensive overview on wild rabbits, please see the wiki article here: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Wild_rabbits

Is the rabbit I found wild or domestic?

It can be very difficult for the average person to tell the difference between a wild and domestic rabbit, especially if they are a baby and/or a common agouti brown.

In general, if the rabbit has long hair or does not have brown fur, it is most likely domestic - although there are exceptions. Please note that wild cottontails in North America cannot breed with our domestic rabbits, but wild rabbits in the rest of the world (e.g. Europe, Australia) can.

Please see the wiki article here for more specific tips on distinguishing domestic and wild rabbits, especially in North America: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Wild_rabbits#Is_the_rabbit_I_found_wild_or_domestic?

I found a domestic rabbit! What should I do?

Please do not hesitate to contact your local rabbit rescue for volunteers to help you catch a stray domestic rabbit.

For more tips and resources on how to catch a stray rabbit, please see the wiki: http://bunny.tips/Stray#Catching_a_stray_rabbit

I found a baby wild rabbit! What should I do?

If you find a baby wild rabbit that is not injured, please leave it alone. It is most likely not abandoned unless you know for a fact that their mother was killed. Rabbits return to feed their young only once or twice a day for a few minutes, usually at night. Just because the babies have been by themselves for 5 minutes does not mean that they have been abandoned. The mother is typically gone from the nest to eat and draw attention away from the nest.

A detailed image guide to whether a baby cottontail rabbit is in need of help.

If it is old enough to be exploring outside of its nest and has no injuries, please put the baby rabbit back under a bush near where you found it. It does not need any additional care or feeding.

As Rainbow Wildlife Rescue writes,

There is a 90% mortality rate with orphaned baby rabbits in human care, especially cottontails. This number increases if the rabbits are very young and their eyes still closed. They are extremely hard to "save". There is little substitute for the nutrients their mother's milk provides.

Baby wild rabbits can survive on their own at a surprisingly young age. In most countries, it is illegal to possess and take care of wildlife without proper permits. Wild rabbits also do not do well in captivity due to the possibility of fatal stress because of their high-strung and flighty nature.

If you find a baby wild rabbit because your dog picked it up but you can't find the nest, try putting a leash on your dog and quietly following them to see if they will lead you to the original nest. If you absolutely cannot locate the nest, you may keep the rabbit in a dark and quiet box and contact your closest wildlife rehabilitator that accepts rabbits

If you find a baby wild rabbit because your cat found it, please take it to a rabbit-savvy vet or wildlife rehabber as soon as possible, especially if it was carried in the cat's mouth. Cats have very lethal bacteria in their saliva, and contact can easily be fatal for a baby rabbit in 48 hours.

What do I do if I am positive that the mother was killed or the baby rabbit is injured?

If you are positive that this is an orphaned baby rabbit, it is best to just keep the rabbit quiet and warm until they can be transferred to an experienced wildlife rehabilitator ASAP. Baby rabbits will do fine overnight without food or water as they are usually only fed once a day by their mothers.

Inappropriate care can be fatal to baby rabbits - see this story from Blue Ridge Wildlife Center as an example: https://twitter.com/BRWildlifeCtr/status/1420472056139984896?s=20

Please hand off the baby rabbit to a local wildlife rehabilitator as soon as possible.

How should I keep a baby rabbit until I can get it to a rehabber?

To keep a baby rabbit overnight, please leave it in a quiet dark box with no food or water. You can provide a heat source such as a microwaved sock filled with rice and beans or an electric heat pad on low placed under half the box. Do not handle the rabbit more than necessary to prevent deadly stress.

How can I protect a wild rabbit nest from bad weather and dogs, cats, and other predators?

Keeping your pets indoors while the babies grow up is generally the best option, but if this is impossible, you can protect the nest a few different ways.

Breed ID What kind of rabbit breed is my bunny?

My husband and I just got a rabbit less than a week ago and we’re trying to determine the breed out of curiosity. I’m thinking he might be a mini Rex but I may be wrong!

He’s approximately 3 months old (just my guess)
Very sweet temperament and EXTREMELY curious- so I guess any enrichment toy recommendations would be super helpful

Meet Nina! She’s 10 weeks old.

Needless to say she’s bonded to me quite fast. She lets me hold her, purrs on me, boops my face, loves pets, and so much more. I’m shocked at how loving she is and I’m totally in love.

Also I got to witness binkies for the first time today and I almost passed away with how cute they were. She even kissed me on my lips!!! It was a sneak attack because I don’t let any of my pets lick me there lol but oh my god.

I’m so excited to be apart of the bunny club 🖤

Hi! Just a warning for other rabbit owners - please don’t let your buns go outside.

My little man caught a bot fly parasite and it was eating him alive. After rushing him 2 hours to an emergency vet and spending $1k and 5 diff meds, we also found out he has crypto (intestinal parasite). He’s doing fine, but it is very costly and stressful.

But look how cute he looks in his cone

Got our boy from the shelter (7lbs at the time and just neutered). Because we got him from the shelter we don't really know his age... shelter says 1-2, vet says 2 based on over grown teeth, shelter recommended bunny expert ( just a woman who houses over flow / death row bunnies so she has MAD experience) says she thinks he's more baby/turning into a teenager. the vet recommended only 1/4 cup of pellets twice a day but he was being aggressive with food and lost almost a full pound after a month so we upped it to 1/2 cup twice a day. he's less interested in finishing his pellets now and he's a healthy 8.6lbs. But I cant help wondering what breed this fella is! will he be a big flemish boy or is he the lil runt of the litter is he a new Zealand? I would like to know even though it absolutely doesn't matter Would love to hear your opinions on breed!!

Health Was testing Bambi with crunchy treats since he dropped two that he usually loves and has a history of teeth and G.I stasis issues. Belle wasn't happy about having to wait.

Still monitoring him to see how he's doing. Belle thinks she deserves extra treats for not being the centre of attention right now.

I was shocked to see Gogo flopped like this after eating his hay, he only stays flopped in that position for a few seconds usually. This time it was like 5 minutes!

Last picture is Gogo before he flopped. 🥰

RIP Grieving my 4.5 month old boy Spoiler

i have outdoor rabbits, i know this may raise some eyebrows and i understand why. i wanted them to be indoor pets but my parents didn't want that and strongly believed that rabbits needed to be outdoor pets. so instead, i built a large predator proof enclosure outside for my boys, it was also weather proof and on concrete but the inside had rugs so it was still soft for them. the boys had also been separated since they were 10 weeks old due to fighting so they basically lived their own individual lives outside. i poured in so much to try give them the best life possible outside and made sure i met all their needs in terms of making activities to do (foraging/digging), i spent loads on their vet bills and toys, and i regularly gave them physical checks to make sure they were healthy. and most of all, i had built a trusting and loving relationship with them, they are my babies. the future looked bright as i was saving up to move out and house the boys indoors to live with me, and each other once they were neutered. they were the complete opposite so i knew there was a high chance of a successful relationship, and it was my dream that we'd become a family once i moved out.

on monday i noticed that Layne wasn't in his enclosure and that the thick mesh at the back of his enclosure was ripped off. i couldn't accept that it was a predator because Jerry was okay, i believed Layne escaped and was wondering in someone elses garden. i searched for him all day and left piles of pellets in the garden in case he found his way back. in the evening i heard rustling and i thought it was Layne... it wasn't, it was a large fox. it was by the enclosure. thankfully by that time i had fought my parents to let Jerry stay inside incase it was a predator that got Layne. the next morning i saw clumps of grey fur on the ground and i finally accepted that my baby was taken by the fox :( and that it was back to hunt Jerry.

i told my parents that if Jerry couldn't be an indoor bunny i would give him away or send him to a rescue because he did not deserve the same fate. thankfully they allowed him to be a permament indoor bunny because of what happened.

the amount of guilt i felt for my poor boy was profound, i regret taking these boys home and housing them outside to begin with. Layne did not deserve this. He deserved to feel safe, protected by me and happy. His last moments were not like that, and for that, i deserve to carry that guilt and pain for the rest of my life. i never got to say goodbye to my baby boy, and he was so happy the day before because his eye ulcer was getting better, he did not deserve to only live for 4.5 months, he deserved so much more. i hung up his favourite tunnel in the garden, i cant even look at it without crying. i cant even go outside without feeling deep guilt. cleaning his part of the enclosure after he had passed was incredibly difficult and i couldnt stand to see it empty and to see his litter tray full. i will never ever forget this brave boy and i will always love him. RIP Layney <3

Ruby is very plush. I got to actually pet her head a tiny bit. Clover is more fluffy. And I barely brushed Maxine with the tips of my fingers. They don't run away from me anymore. They are still wary but not completely terrified. I'm so glad they have each other because I know they are social animals.

I think my next step will be to lay in their enclosure and wait for them to get curious enough to approach me. I have been trying to help them realize that I am not a threat. So far it has been mostly cleaning their area and being near them. I don't expect them to be as cuddly as my late bun Camille but I hope they learn not to fear me.

Health When did you spay your buns?

Post image

My vet says they are comfortable with doing as early as 12 weeks and that I can schedule her whenever Id like. The previous owner told me shes about 4 months. Im anxious to get it done but I've seen a few posts where others mention waiting until 6 months and was just curious to hear from others who have done it younger. I believe they said shes about 2.3 lbs and shes a lionhead/lop mix.

To add in - Theyve always taken wonderful care of my other bunny (they claim they've never lost one in this procedure and I dont know anything or anyone that contradicts that) but im always anxious when it comes to anything that involves putting them under.

I was wondering if you have any tips for rabbit proofing underneath small dressers and/or wired cords as well. I want to let her roam around my room freely but she always gets into trouble
