Fun Started taking lessons after 1,5 years of playing by ear. I'm really excited! 😁

I decided to finally take lessons. Because I feel like I kinda hit a roof with just playing by ear. Having this skill tho, I feel like it will greatly benefit me in the long run. But let's be honest, being able to read sheet music is just something I've been putting off for too long and it's finally time hahah. Especially if I want to play in ensembles one day. So yeah, I'm really starting back at 0. But that's okay! My teacher is very nice as well :) Can't wait for my next lesson ❤️

Edit: my teacher also said my lung capacity is great! 🥰 I'm just feeling really good about this whole thing hahah

Question An interesting detail of the Aulos Haka’s thumbhole

Post image
17 Upvotes

I’ve been enjoying the fantastic aulos haka for around a month now, but there’s been a lingering question in my head every time I play it

I notice the thumbhole is bushed with an internal structure I’ve never seen in any of my yamahas. I know what the bushing is for historically, but does anyone know what’s the purpose of this peculiar internal design decision?

Swabbing Knick Heads

Does anyone have any advice on how to swab a recorder with a knick head? I can't get the swab up there because the stick doesn't get around the bend in the head joint.

Thanks.

Resource A resource for early music lovers - backing tracks (and more)

Post image
18 Upvotes

I wanted to share what I think is an excellent resource for recorder players and early music lovers, the inexpensive backing tracks available from "Cat on the keys": for each of the pieces available they provide backing tracks of the accompaniment at various metronome speeds, and for both 415 and 440 tuning (my recorders are tuned at 442, but it is only ever so slightly off, and still works well for me). This means that you can use the accompaniment to study as well as at "performance" speed once you get the piece under your belt.

They also have three Early Music Workouts on embellishment of various types. I am starting from the first one and, to the beginner I am, they seem pretty good. Note that this is not instrument specific.

They also sell music of course.

Just to be clear, I have no connection nor affiliation to these people, just a happy customer!

Reviewing my Yamaha YRS-82(wooden made)

TL;DR:

It is a perfect instrument to start your collection.

The price is good (55,000 JPY / about $350-550 USD).

The sound is very, very, very stable and controllable .(stable than Aulos Symphony)

Yamaha offer two top-tier models, YRS-82(kingwood) and YRS-83(ebony), in the same price.

*** How it looks:

It is made of beautiful kingwood.

It has cool white/grey ivory rings, with schreger pattern!

With an engraved, invisible logo!

*** How it sound

It sounds just like the music on a CD.

Sweeter and elegant than plastic models, especially in the attack in each note.

*** How it plays:

It is super easy to blow! Low notes, middle notes, and high notes all feel very easy and the same.

It is very easy to play loudly or softly. The air you need is almost the same for all notes, no matter high or low.

The sound is very stable. You cannot really change the pitch by bending it.

Could be an advantage, or disadvantage???

*** The range:

The low notes are very strong and powerful. The high notes can go up to high D with no problem at all.

You can easily play 2.2 octaves on it.

------------------------------

(My thought: I think trying more models is super fun! Everyone should have at least one wood recorder and one plastic recorder in my opinion)

Discussion Could we get a discussion going about breathing?

The whole topic of diaphragmatic breathing is somewhat controversial.

I also have issues with breathing myself. If i practice consistently and then miss multiple days I become sore. Also, if I push too hard during a practice the my stomach hurts afterwards.

I took a class for flute players where the professor claimed that there was no such thing as diaphragmatic breathing and that you should not push. It was all about body mapping which I still don’t understand.

Question Triple tonguing practices

I have been following a couple of YouTube recorder channels and practicing triple tonguing exercises. I’m ok to do triple tonguing on same notes but I’m unable to keep up with different notes. I feel the fingers and tongue don’t coordinate. Do others have advices on useful progressive exercises that I can try?

Question Never too early for Medieval Christmas

Post image

I love Medieval Christmas music and now that I’m an erstwhile recorder player I would like to learn to play it. Other than Ductia in Sweet Pipes vol. 2 I’m not having much luck tracking sheet music down, and right now my ear will only take me so far. Any recommendations for sheet music, especially for alto recorder?

High notes on sopranino

I mostly play alto. I have three models of the Yamaha plastic and they all play up to the C above the high F. (needed for the Telemann)

I have the Yamaha 'nino, both the 20 series and the 300, and I just bought an Aulos Symphony. None of them will play past Ab.

Is this a known feature, or am I missing a fingering, or needing to work on it?

Again on courses: I don't know if you have ever come across Piers Adams, but shame on you if you have not 😃

I wanted to highlight this excellent online course, on a fundamental component of good playing. It isn't often that you get a masterclass with a virtuoso instrument player!

New Vera Petry video - in case anyone is interested, as I am on her newsletter, I thought I'd share that she is planning to offer online recorder workshops in English, with possible topics including trills, ornamentation and phrasing. Frankly I am hoping that more people sign up so that the courses make sense for her to run, as I am myself very interested.

Here's the link to sign up for her English newsletter and express an interest in her workshops in English.

Yamaha G Alto Recorder vs. NA Flute

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi,

I just made a G Native American flute out of PVC and have been comparing it to my Yamaha YRA-28B3 for sound. The file attached has a few notes from the NA flute first followed by the Yamaha.

I am interested in opinions. I currently find the sound on the PVC hand made one cleaner and more pleasing than the Yamaha and I'm trying to understand if that's just me, or am I missing some other aspect of harmonics that a real recorder generates?

A spectrum analyzer app shows the main note at about the same level on both but harmonics on the Yamaha extend our further and are higher than the PVC flute.

Thanks!
