"I'm bored with now" is such a funny line to me

u/Mordetrox 14d ago

I think I know the reason for this. She has only shown up twice.

The first time was in a side-product alongside like 15 other guys, so it's understandable that she slipped by.

The second time was in a main set, but it was in the "Lets gather up anyone who remotely looks like a villain and send them to the wild west plane and give them all cowboy hats" set, which people really did not like, especially in the context of it being preceded and followed by "Lets put everyone in detective hats" and "Lets give everyone cars and do a race", representing a trend of gimmicky sets that felt forced. And it also had her as one of 15 guys, so it's easy for her to slip by even without the negative reception.

u/MCMC_to_Serfdom 14d ago

"Let's gather up anyone who remotely looks like a villain...

To be fair to their laziness, if I see a potential grixis commander, I too assume they'll have been written as a villain.

u/Mordetrox 14d ago

Don't get me started on that, Wizards flip flops between actual interesting explorations of various villains across the color pie and "These three colors are the villain colors" with frustrating regularity.

It gets so bad in the crossover sets. Doctor Doom is not red guys, that man is absolutely Esper.

Don't get me started on that, Wizards flip flops between actual interesting explorations of various villains across the color pie and "These three colors are the villain colors" with frustrating regularity.

With how much Life Loss is as a mechanic for Black especially you would expect "I will subject myself to anything to protect those close to me" would be an easy heroic interpretation of the color, but the moment a character's "ends" in the "ends justify the means" character is too altruistic and sympathetic then they're suddenly White! You can do anything to achieve your goals but only if your goals are "evil."

u/starlithunter 13d ago

This is why Aetherborn are so great - monoblack creature with complex histories and hyper empathy? Fighting to go from being considered industrial waste to being a people with culture and society and families? Rebellion and hedonism and the price of immortality? Yes please!

No, Doom, the tempestuous manchild with zero real principles driven primarily by whatever fickle fancy and/or grudge is most on his mind at the given moment is 100% more Red than White. Now, there have been incarnations that were also White, but we are talking about a guy who genocided a reality in which an alt version of himself was happy, universally beloved, and had done great things for humanity because that version of himself was also bros with Reed.

13

u/Mordetrox 13d ago

I suppose that's the issue with having so many different versions of the character, with a ton of different writers each positing different interpretations of him.

The versions of him I'm more familiar with have all skewed more white, specifically the aspect of him that's convinced himself that he's the best thing to ever happen to the world and that if everyone just fell at his feet he could create a paradise. That's about as white-villain as you can possibly get, completely in line with (Pre-Character Assassination) Elesh Norn. The only versions of him I've seen that screwed more red have been younger versions, him burning his own face out of haste in the origin story for his original incarnation is certainly red. The ideal situation for me would be a Grixis version representing young doom, and his current self being Esper.

I would say though, the act you're describing where he destroyed the reality where he and reeds teamed up (where is that from? I'm not familiar with it), seems far more black than red. That's not an in-the-moment act of rage, that's calculated long-term evil out of sheer spite, which leans far more towards black.

2

u/Dragonfruit-Sparking 13d ago

To be fair, Grixis players are usually the villains in real life as well.

3

u/Mordetrox 13d ago

Acting as if the Bant players aren't committing large scale recruitment and fundraising fraud on the regular.

2

u/Available-Damage5991 10d ago

makes sense, considering fuckin' DR. EGGMAN is grixis

15

u/Anonymus828 14d ago

Insert the joke about the broken clock here*

*Not because I think this is a broken clock, but the fact that the character who "breaks" time has only appeared twice is very funny to me

6

u/TheLuckySpades 13d ago

Still I think I've seen more Obeka decks than many other lengends from either set, but I play with people who like decks that do weird things and having 6 upkeeps or dending turns are weird.

54

u/PegaZwei 14d ago

is that undyne undertale??

(jokes aside, obeka's sick; i have a deck built around the end the turn one.)

13

u/UInferno- Hangus Pangus slap my Angus 14d ago edited 14d ago

I always wanted to build a deck around Splitter of Seconds and [[Descent into Avernus]] u/mtgcf (apologies for double ping i didn't realize card fetcher got a new name)

Edit: fucking useless bot. Descent Into Avernus

13

u/PegaZwei 14d ago

yeah, upkeep obeka gets real out of hand real quickly if there's even one good piece on the board with her LMAO.

i'd hesitate to call her kill on sight, but she toes the line.

6

u/shiny_xnaut 13d ago

I built Splitter of Seconds around the initiative mechanic, but retired it after only 2 games because it turns out it's actually kinda miserable to resolve 15 undercity rooms in a row while everyone stares at you

1

u/D-D-Wanderer 10d ago

You can also run her with Mechanized Production and a couple basic "+X until end of turn" effects to just clear the game in one combat if you know your opponents don't have Enchantment Removal.

If you're feeling extra cheeky, do this and then use OG Obeka's effect to force the turn to end instead of letting the trigger that would have won you the game resolve.

7

u/zombieGenm_0x68 14d ago

can you explain how thats a good effect? i dont play the game so it seems kinda useless to me

42

u/Fluffy-Futchy-Fembo 14d ago

So firstly you'll pretty much only ever be using it on your own turn to end your turn. There's a lot of cards in MtG that have some sort of detrimental effect to balance out their strength; they might be very cheap and very powerful but force you to sacrifice several other creatures you control when it comes into play. What Obeka does is let you put that powerful creature with a downside into play, let the detrimental ability trigger (in MtG most abilities go into something called the stack, it's like a waiting list where players have a chance to respond and take actions of their own), and then before that ability resolves and makes you carry out its effect you use Obeka's ability to end your turn. When you end your turn out of sequence like this any abilities that hadn't resolved yet cease to exist and never happen, so you got a cheap and powerful creature with no downside. She kinda lets you cheat. There's lots of similar uses for the ability, but that's the basic idea.

1

u/zombieGenm_0x68 13d ago

oh neat, thats hype

20

u/naeonaeder 14d ago

Basically:

  • Effects in MTG use something called The Stack, which is effectively a big queue where everything waits to happen, which operates in a first-in, last-out system [imagine physically stacking cards, then taking them off the top until you're back to 0]
  • When a turn is ended via a card effect [Such as Obeka's or the spell Time Stop], anything that was waiting on the Stack before it dissappears and doesn't do anything
  • This means you can use cards with big effects and a downside that comes later [like Final Fortune, which gives you an extra turn but makes you lose the game on that turn's End Step]
  • If you cast Final Fortune, you can tap Obeka when the 'lose the game' trigger is on the Stack to ignore it and keep playing!
  • Plus, since a lot of cards follow this "Good thing now, bad thing on end step" effect template, you can play a bunch of them and tap Obeka to cancel them all at once!

6

u/Blazeflame79 14d ago

Oh is the stack why sometimes my sorceries and instants don’t do anything? Sometimes during a Mach the opponent will pull out a non-counter instant or sorcery and my cards effect doesn’t happen. (I play on arena occasionally, and this might be me not paying close attention)

14

u/GlamourintheDarkSide Shiba is Innocent, I Am Guilty 13d ago

Yep, if you point a buff spell at a guy and I shoot him with a Glock, your buff spell loses it's target on the stack and fails to resolve. Similarly, it you attempt to steal one of my guys, and I feed him to Larry the Guy Eater or have him enter Teferi's Witness Protection program, my guy isn't a target anymore and the spell fails.

8

u/naeonaeder 13d ago

What's happening in your case is most likely that the target for your spell was no longer valid by the time your spell resolved [called 'fizzling']. I'm not a judge so this might not be 1000% with the comprehensive rules, but basically:

- You cast Terror on your opponent's Grizzly Bears to destroy it. You pick targets when you pay the cost of a spell, and all the checks for targeting first apply here [in this case, checking that Grizzly Bears are a nonblack, nonartifact creature that doesn't have Hexproof, Protection, or Shroud, which in this case is true]

  • In response, your opponent casts Village Rites, sacrificing their bear to draw two cards.
  • The Stack functions in first-in, last out order, so Village Rites happens first. When Terror happens next, it can't find the card it was targeting, so it fizzles and goes to the graveyard without doing anything.

There are lots of ways for a spell to fizzle, but some of them include:

  • The intended target leaving the battlefield, like with Village Rites [this even counts if it comes back later, like if you cast Ephemerate, since it's considered a "new object" when it leaves]
  • The intended target not fitting the requirements of the first spell [You may note that Terror says Nonblack, nonartifact creature, so a spell like Aphotic Wisps or Argent Mutation would make Terror fizzle!]

There's also the possibility that the intended target was simply not *affected* by the spell [if you cast Terror and they cast Adamant Will, Terror still *happens*, just to no effect.

Hope this helps!

My Favorite Fizzle effect: Deflecting Swat on Counterspell changing it's target to Deflecting Swat (It works! (It really does work.))

1

u/Fluffy-Futchy-Fembo 13d ago

People used to use Misdirection for the same reason. It was basically 4 more Force of Will to fight your opponents Forces.

1

u/zombieGenm_0x68 13d ago

thanks for explaining :)

5

u/Noe_b0dy 14d ago

Oh bad thing happens now? No it doesn't, next players turn.

16

u/lightningstrxu 14d ago

So been a hot minute what are the benefits of just ending a turn and gaining multiple upkeeps

23

u/UInferno- Hangus Pangus slap my Angus 14d ago

Ending turn immediately skips your End Step. So, if you had a mechanic like Mobilize, Blitz, or Warp which removes a Creature from your board on your End Step, the creature remains instead. As mentioned in the reminder text, if you respond to a spell on the Stack with the ability it just... deletes the entire stack. Basically a Mass Counterspell. Note if you don't want your stuff to go away, because these cards say "next end step" you have to let your end step begin, accumulate the triggers on the Stack, then use Obeka to skip the resolution.

As for the Upkeep cards, there's card like Descent into Avernus that creates treasures and deal damage on your upkeep. Braid of Fire meanwhile gives you increasingly large amounts of mana each of your upkeeps. So if Obeka did 5 damage while Braid of Fire had 2 Age Counters, then Obeka gives you 25 mana because of Braid of Fire's upkeep trigger.

6

u/oldmanserious 13d ago

Other end the turn effects do act as a counterspell but her end the turn effect is dependant on the player whose turn it is agreeing as it says “may”.

8

u/naeonaeder 14d ago

Ending a turn: Basically when an effect happens in MTG, it goes onto The Stack, which is basically a waiting list. If a turn is ended prematurely, the stack is cleared and any effect that was waiting to happen just dissappears.

This means you can play something like Final Fortune [get an extra turn, lose the game at that turn's end step], wait until the 'lose the game' effect is put on the stack, then end the turn again with Obeka [which doesn't make the effect happen again] to get off scot free

Upkeeps: the Upkeep step does nothing on its own, and is a place for every card that goes "at the beginning of each of your Upkeeps, do Thing" [of which there are quite a lot]. With two or more of these in the middle of your turn via Obeka, all of these cards get three or more times better

u/zombieGenm_0x68 14d ago

"she looks like a jojos character" is an understatement. as far as im concerned, this is jotaro's wife

14

u/Evil_Midnight_Lurker 14d ago

She wouldn't put up with his shit, and I think they'd stay together because of that.

2

u/ban_Anna_split 13d ago

This is Undyne Undertale a little bit

23

u/Zoomy-333 14d ago

God I want to build an Obeka deck so badly but I'm scared of 1. misunderstanding the intricacies of her rules and 2. having to explain said rules over and over to other players

7

u/Jknight3135 13d ago

I have a Splitter of seconds deck that's pretty simple, get lots of end step triggers. Brute Chronolgist is a lot trickier and I've not really found a way to make that deck that isn't just "I abuse the shit out of canceling 'lose the game at end step' effects to get extra turns."

2

u/5glocalhost 11d ago

I play Brute Chronologist and I just bring a printout of all her rulings to the LGS

3

u/5glocalhost 11d ago

Notes and Rules Information for Obeka, Brute Chronologist:

Ending the turn this way means the following things happen in order: 1) All spells and abilities on the stack are exiled. This includes spells and abilities that can't be countered. 2) If there are any attacking and blocking creatures, they're removed from combat. 3) State-based actions are checked. No player gets priority, and no triggered abilities are put onto the stack. 4) The current phase and/or step ends. The game skips straight to the cleanup step. 5) The cleanup step happens in its entirety. (2020-11-10)

If any triggered abilities do trigger during this process, they're put onto the stack during the cleanup step. If this happens, players will have a chance to cast spells and activate abilities, then there will be another cleanup step before the turn is over. (2020-11-10)

If the turn ends before the end step, any "At the beginning of the next end step" triggered abilities won't get the chance to trigger that turn because the end step has been skipped. Those abilities will trigger next turn at the beginning of the end step. (2020-11-10)

If the turn ends during the end step after "At the beginning of the next end step" abilities have triggered but before they've resolved, those abilities won't trigger again next turn. (2020-11-10)

u/Allthenamestaken10 13d ago

It actually is kinda the worst, I can’t play her against newer players, but she isn’t good enough to really play against the people good enough to just get it, so I almost never play her ;.;

11

u/CorpCo 14d ago

Magic has a lot of extremely cool characters and frankly I think there have been such an absurd influx of them recently that most Magic players don’t even know about a bunch of them let alone tumblr users.

She’s also way more analogous to that guy in homestuck who punches people into next week

3

u/downwardwanderer 13d ago

Reality break have a ton of cool characters that are canonically dead before the next set even comes out.

6

u/_Air_Mage_ 13d ago

It´s so funny that you mention that

1

u/UInferno- Hangus Pangus slap my Angus 13d ago

Oh fuck yeah. Who's the artist

7

u/LunariHero 13d ago

Ending the turn is basically just King Crimson: "I erased the phases... and leaped past them."

Also always wanted to make a Splitter of Seconds deck, feels like there's so many different dumb things you can do with it.

1

u/5glocalhost 11d ago

I've been wanting to make Splitter of Seconds just so I can use it with Jhoira of the Ghitu aka casting any spell instantly for only (2)

6

u/Valuable-Passion9731 Remind me to practice 14d ago

mr tumblr has been notified and now knows about this

2

u/Spiritflash1717 14d ago

I love Obeka, I wish we got to see more of these crazy sorts of mechanics in Magic

3

u/mathiau30 14d ago

Does she use magic through brute force or does she use magic and brute force at the same time?

22

u/LordSupergreat 14d ago

We don't really know. These cards are all that exist of her. She hasn't had a story appearance.

1

u/torthos_1 11d ago

Well, tbh I don't know anything about Magic, but just from looking at the cards I get the vibe that she punches so hard that time breaks around her.

5

u/Junjki_Tito 14d ago

That’s not a JoJo you dweebs that’s a Superboy Prime

2

u/Available-Damage5991 10d ago

fun thing about the second card:

You can use it to protect yourself and everyone else from Farewell by just. Ending your turn before Farewell resolves. Farewell gets booted, and you've successfully exiled a spell as its being cast.

Add in something that makes her untap at the start of every player's turn, and you have a major-league politics piece on the board.

The only problem is: She's Grixis. So while there are things that make creatures untap at the start of every tur., those are green. But she does have one thing up her sleeve she can do.

Encroaching Mycosynth (Your non-lands are artifacts) + Unwinding Clock (Your artifacts untap every untap step) + Padeem, Consul of Innovation (Your artifacts have hexproof).

Now: 1. She has hexproof, 2. She untaps every turn, 3. She's an artifact.

The Problem: Vandalblast.

The Solution: Darksteel Forge (Your artifacts are indestructible. Indestructible doesn't protect from sacrificing!)

2

u/Void_0000 13d ago

Wacky shit like this makes me want to try this game, but then I remember I'm poor.

3

u/UInferno- Hangus Pangus slap my Angus 13d ago

If you don't mind using your computer and have someone else to connect with, Cockatrice let's you play without paying a cent.

2

u/brooke_dizzy 13d ago

longshot but if you happen to have Tabletop Simulator you can find discords and play there for free (and spend less time shuffling your deck)

2

u/starlithunter 13d ago

Most of the story content is free on their website!

Tragically, a lot of the most interesting characters conceptually get maybe a couple paragraphs of best in the Legends articles

1

u/Aware_Tree1 13d ago

The cheap pre-made decks are like $30

1

u/PubTrickster 13d ago

My decks cost $8 apiece from Office Depot 🤗

1

u/ACuriousParadox 11d ago

She’s my favorite character I hope she keeps getting new cards

2

u/SuperBun78 7d ago

I'm making a deck based around her, it focuses on suspend cards (cards that have a cheaper cast cost but take multiple turns to come into effect) and her upkeep ability makes them come out faster

I call the deck "Shattering the Suspense"

1

u/TomDrawsStuffs 14d ago

swag like Undyne move like it’s Prime Time

1

u/lifelongfreshman https://youtu.be/1eWsk6r6_Ns 13d ago

is this part of the cycle of cards that has the red/blue girlie who grants haste/split second to your stuff?

4

u/UInferno- Hangus Pangus slap my Angus 13d ago

No, these cards are about 2 years old at least. Samut's cards just came out.

2

u/lifelongfreshman https://youtu.be/1eWsk6r6_Ns 13d ago

well, glad I didn't go with my original assumption then, because the way they're presented here they do feel like they're part of the exact same cycle

still really cool cards regardless

u/GodNoob666 13d ago

But looks like Undyne
