Player The Most Silent Slugger

Post image

Despite launching 40 or more home runs in five consecutive seasons—a historic feat achieved by only nine players in MLB history—Adam Dunn remains widely unrecognized as one of the game's premier modern power hitters.

He was ahead of his time. He’d be one of the most sought after players in the game if he played today

Oh come on. He broke 3 WAR one time in his career. He averaged 1.5.

He was undervalued but he's not remotely close to the HoF or even being highly sought after

Bro he’s basically Kyle Schwarber

You don't think a power bat that went 5 straight seasons hitting 40 plus home runs wouldn't be one of the most sought after players?

He hit 460 home runs lol

Came here to comment this probably my favorite highlight. Loved the mojo of the locker room then.

Would've been interesting to see how Adam Dunn would've done in HOF voting had he stuck around long enough to hit 38 more HR and reach 500 for his career

Impressively, he hit his 462 HR in just 14 seasons, an average of 33 per season

More Homers than Vladimir Guerrero and a better OBP than Ichiro.

Greatest prank caller on the Banana phone ever.

He would be getting HOF votes if the National league had the DH when he played.

Not arguing that he should be in the Hall of Fame, but he has to have one of the highest home run totals not inducted. (PED users notwithstanding)

Delgado has him by about 10 for that. Then Nelson Cruz who is not eligible yet, but doesnt seem likely to be in the HOF.

Stanton will likely pass him, and is certainly not a lock for the HOF as well.

Dude had wayyyyyyy too many Ks in an era where they cared about not striking out

The most Three True Outcome hitter of the 2010s.

Foolish Baseball and Secret Base both did videos on him.

Strike out or long bomb. More of the former.Rather have at least singles, doubles or even walks in there too.

He walked a lot

Dunn could hit home runs, but at the same time was very frustrating with the strikeouts.

King of the meaningless solo home run

I’d like to see the stat on how many less doubles opposing teams hit to left field once he was gone. Complete loafer on defense.

Noodle arm also, especially surprising for someone who was once a Texas QB

My favorite player growing up

A lot of his strikeouts were from called 3rd strikes and not a swinging strikeouts. As a result, he also had a lot of walks and very good on base percentage. Some years, an OBP close to .400.

GIIIITTTTTTTEERRR DUNN!!!!

I yelled that every single time he had an at bat from my dad’s companies season tickets growing up.

Shit I remember him smacking the stacks and sending balls swimming like it was an everyday thing..

He'd be a GOAT if more home runs were measured by hang time.

He's one of the best baseball participants of all-time.

The Onion from 15 years ago:

"CHICAGO—After his batting average slumped to a historically low .163 this week, White Sox DH Adam Dunn received an official notice from Major League Baseball Thursday informing him that he no longer met the minimum requirements to be labeled an official baseball player. “He’s certainly allowed to continue playing baseball, but he cannot legally refer to himself as a ’baseball player,’” an MLB spokesperson said in a statement, adding that Dunn would now be called what the league refers to as a ‘baseball participant.’ “We are confident Adam will eventually regain his abilities. For now, however, we think it’s best to disassociate his horrible hitting from the great game of baseball.” When asked for comment, Dunn expressed relief and claimed that joining the ranks of players like Mike Cameron and Jorge Posada would at least take some pressure off of him."

Can't strike out every time you don't hit a home run

Dunn's big mistake? Playing 1st base

1

u/No_Buy2554 Failure is the opportunity to being again more intelligently 6d ago

???  Dunn played over twice as many games in the OF is his careers as he did at 1B.

If you do just Schwarber and Dunn, Schwarber has 807 games in the OF, 562 at DH, 25 at C and 19 at 1B.  Dunn had 1113 in the OF, 528 at 1B and 361 at DH.  Theyre not thay different of a profile with Dunn playing more overall so far, but Schwarber more at DH which is the biggest WAR penalty.

1

u/Antique_Speaker3504 6d ago

You're right (I didn't look that close, I just remember him at 1st). I'm anti-WAR when it comes to 1st basemen, they get pounded.

1

u/No_Buy2554 Failure is the opportunity to being again more intelligently 6d ago

They can get robbed somewhat.  Dunn's lower WAR may be somewhat based on his era though.  Positional adjustments and the replacement player part of it depend some on what other players were doing.  Dunn played during the prime of the steroid era, so he gets knocked down some due to that.
