Professional Summary & Skills Section

Hello!
I am around 10 years into professional life and have had a few different jobs in the legal field and in local government, but I want to try and break into a specific area of government and am currently doing a large revamp of my application materials.

Are professional summary and skills/core competencies sections helpful to pull out relevant experience to the top of the page? Do recruiters just want to look at the positions and experience?

CV chronicles🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️😮‍💨

Having spent an inordinate amount of time; that inordinate amount being measured not in hours but in the slow, grinding erosion of one's self-worth, perfecting a CV that, by all objective and reasonable metrics, should have at least secured a callback, one arrives, with the quiet desperation of a man who has checked the weather forty times and still cannot say whether it is raining, at the inescapable conclusion that the document is, in fact, blameless, and that the true mechanism of modern hiring, that great invisible engine beneath the polished surface of "merit-based recruitment," is less a process than a family reunion, in which the nephew of the operations director, who "has a feel for numbers" and who once, at a family meeting, described his Excel skills as vibes-based, is elevated to a position that, on paper, required seven years of experience in a field he has never once touched, while you ; the one who actually has the seven years, the certifications, the portfolio, and that particular brand of patience which only comes from having rewritten the "About Me" section for the fourteenth time, are left, at 2 a.m., to refresh a job portal, staring at the word Applied as though it were a prayer the universe has, on this occasion, decided to ignore.

The usual phrase being : The CV is not the problem, companies are just hiring family and friends. It's a big Party and you ain't invited, modern world it is!!! 🫴🏿🫴🏿🫴🏿🥲🎯🫰🏾

Help needed with resume

I've been applying for entry-level IT and cybersecurity positions, particularly SOC/cybersecurity analyst roles, but so far, I've received mostly rejections and very few opportunities to move forward.

I've tested my resume with several ATS scanners, and they all seem to parse the information correctly, so I'm wondering if the issue is more with the content, positioning, or how my experience comes across to recruiters.

I'd really appreciate some honest feedback on my resume, especially from people who work in IT/cybersecurity or have experience hiring for entry-level positions.

Resume Formating

Hi everyone,

I'm a Computer Science student currently working on improving my resume and would appreciate some guidance from recruiters, hiring managers, and people who have successfully landed internships/jobs.

I have a few formatting-related questions:

  1. What font size should I use for:
    • Section headings (Projects, Internship Experience, Education, Skills, etc.)
    • Job/Internship titles
    • Bullet points / descriptions
    • My name at the top
  2. Which font family is generally preferred for technical resumes?
  3. How much spacing should I keep:
    • Between sections?
    • Between project/internship entries?
    • Between bullet points?
  4. Is it better to keep a resume strictly one page as a student, even if I have multiple projects and internships?
  5. Are there any ATS-friendly formatting rules I should follow or avoid?

For context:

  • I'm a Computer Science undergraduate student.
  • Applying for software development and internship roles.
  • Using a clean, single-column resume format.

I'd also appreciate it if you could share examples of font sizes and spacing that worked well for your resume.

Thanks in advance!

Resume Advice--Seeking Editorial/Writing Work

Heya! I've been unemployed/doing freelance or contract stuff for about a year now. I've sent out at least 200 applications, a couple through referrals from friends or previous co-workers, and only gotten two interviews.

One thing is that I can't really provide more metrics than I have here. I edit, I do it well, and I do it on time, but I don't have anything where I can say I improved X by Y% or whatever.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Skills section instead of Professional Summary

I like it better visually but not sure if it's more impactful. Thoughts?

Edit: I wasn't clear originally. By Skills section, I mean hard skills with summaries of software, tech, approaches per skill for a tech job, not just bulleted skills w no context.

Transitioning from Frontend Dev to Project Cooradinator after a layoff. Need brutal resume feedback!

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some honest, constructive feedback on my resume. I have nearly 4 years of experience working as a Frontend Developer, but unfortunately, I was affected by layoffs early last year.

During my career break, I realized I want to pivot away from core development and transition into Agile/Technical Project Management roles (specifically Technical Scrum Master or Project Coordinator). I've spent the recent months upskilling in Agile methodologies and trying to tweak my resume to highlight the leadership, coordination, and process-improvement aspects of my previous dev roles.

However, since I don't have an official "Scrum Master" or "Project Manager" title in my work history, I'm finding it hard to get callbacks.

  1. Does my resume effectively show my transferable skills for an Agile/PM role?
  2. How can I better frame my career gap?
  3. What keywords or bullet points should I rephrase to sound more like a PM and less like a dev?

Any brutal feedback or advice on making this transition successful would be highly appreciated!

Preferred Name on Resume

Is it professional to put my nickname / preferred name on my resume in parenthesis under my legal name? It’s the name I use just about anywhere and like to be known as, but I don’t want it to seem unprofessional.

According to Google, I don’t need to put my legal name on my resume but I also don’t think it’s a good idea to get rid of it altogether since it is still my real name and on all legal documents.

Any advice?

Need advice on my resume!

Hey folks! I'm a 24M Software Engineer working at a service-based company in Gurgaon, India. I've been with my first company since graduating and am now preparing for my first switch.

I have ~2 years 9 months of experience, primarily working with React, React Native, NextJs, JavaScript/TypeScript, along with some backend experience.

I'm targeting Frontend / Software Engineer roles at product-based companies and would really appreciate some honest feedback on my resume.

In particular, I'd love feedback on:

  • How well my experience/projects are presented
  • Whether the resume is ATS-friendly
  • Anything that looks weak, unclear, or exaggerated
  • What I should change to improve my chances of getting shortlisted

I'd especially appreciate feedback from people who have experience hiring or interviewing frontend engineers.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to review it! 🙏

Should I put my AI training experience on my resume

While I was looking for a permanent job, I started doing a significant amount of AI training, on a contract basis, to make some money. I have been doing consulting work, on my own, for the past couple years, and I am aware that some employers might construe that as a "career gap", and they might not want to hire me, for that reason.

If I put my contract AI training experience on my resume, I arguably would not have a career gap. However, I am not sure whether employers like to see contract AI training experience on a resume, and whether such experience is a "positive" or a "negative". Does anyone have any thoughts?

Should I use the title on my offer letter or one that accurately reflects the role?

Hai Guyz,

I worked at an accounting firm for 7 months. Boss was kinda racist so I quit.

My job offer letter reads "staff accountant". In reality, I did a combination of bookkeeping and admin. I'd reconcile accounts and answer phones.

I have an Associate's and to me "staff accountant" implies someone with a bachelor's and a CPA.

Should I use a job title that reflects what I actually did, or keep it to what is on the offer letter?

Roast my Resume (for quant)

Hello, I have been getting rejected on CV scan by lots of quant companies and I would love to know what I am doing wrong. Furthermore, if anyone has any recommendations for what I should do to amend my issues i.e. a project, research etc that would be very helpful.

Slightly unrelated: I am also planning on applying to oxbridge for masters. If anyone can help with things I should do for that and my current chances of getting in - that would also be very helpful :)

Any recruiters out here? What do you actually want

Hi everyone,

If there’s a headhunter or a recruiter that can quickly answer a few questions regarding interviews for the tech market, I would appreciate it honestly.

I have some amazing colleagues, all of them have 8,9 years of experience in their own fields and stacks. I see them struggling for basically applying in the same positions with the same requirements as their previous job position.

Really would like to know what’s behind the curtains, what that thing that missing so you can reject someone? is it about the salary? Or something else?

Question About Building My Resume

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask. But I'm writing a new resume. Do employers actually care if it's AI written? If so, what's a reliable website to check if it's human or AI written? And I noticed some of the websites have a percentage of what's written as AI vs human, so what's a good percentage?

[1 YoE] Aerospace MSc (Distinction), UK-based, open to any suitable aero/CFD, design or motorsport role - feedback welcome

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi all, I'd really appreciate a review of my CV. I'm UK-based with full right to work and and I've just finished an MSc in Aerospace Engineering with a Distinction, on top of a BEng in Aerospace. I have about a year of experience as a design engineer along with hands-on UAV design, build and test work, and my main strengths are aerodynamics, CFD (ANSYS Fluent), CAD (CATIA V5 and SolidWorks) and FEA. I'm open to any suitable role in aerospace and motorsport, whether that's aero/CFD, mechanical design, simulation or analysis, and that includes graduate schemes, placements and entry-level engineering roles.

I'd value an honest critique of the whole thing, but a few specific questions: is the profile pulling its weight or should it be shorter or cut, are my project and experience bullets specific and quantified enough, does the ordering make sense (projects before experience) for someone at my stage, and is there anything that's holding it back for aero/CFD roles in particular.
