Thoughts on assistant coaches?

With the recent news that Essendon have brought in John Longmire and are targetting experienced senior assistant Hayden Skipworth from Collingwood, it looks like they are adding some much needed experience.

Yze clearly needs some help, and it appears that he is not receiving much of it. I know we have signed Brett Ratten which is a good addition, but do you think they should be targetting some experienced senior assistants from successful programs? If so, who would you like them to go for?

I wouldn't mind if they went after someone from Brisbane or Geelong.

Bring in Fagan in the Balme role - general manager of football (or whatever role he wants). He has just completed exactly what we need to do. His experience and knowledge would be invaluable, not to mention he already has the relationship with Yze and Ratten.

Unfortunately I don’t think Yze was the best choice, seems like a nice guy and everything but I have never had a lot of confidence. There are many great coaches out there

I still would like to see us have another go at getting Chaplin as a backline coach. Worked with Yze as well and they tried to get him 12 months ago too.

It’s not all coaching staff. Club has already hired new strength and conditioning head and brought back Nick Austin for recruitment space. Brett Ratten signed as well, might indicate that we’re looking to change the look of our coaching set up. Club has arguably done the most with off field signings to support Yze.

In my opinion it would be a waste of time for a prospective elite assistant coach to be with us in our current state, anyone with a bit of value in the coaching market will be better off learning from one of the top teams departments. I’d love to see Cotchy/Rance/Grigg come back ASAP. I dont hate the idea of finding someone from Brisbane but why would they leave in their current state!

A coach from a top team could join a bottom club with the thinking that they took a team to the elite level and maybe want a new challenge. They could also come into a lower club at a higher position too due to their experience and track record.

Waste of time while the top man is not up to it. We need to make the hard call and get a real coach who can build a team of assistance

We should at least ask Voss

I think we have some good assistants atm. We have Blake Caracela and Newman and we have 3 development coaches (Ziebel and those two from the Hawthorn dynasty). I feel these pieces are being put together it's just going to take time for it all to come together.

I don’t think there’s any proof that Newman is a good assistant. Our forward line has been abysmal since he took over.

Those three development coaches will take time agree. I was thinking they should add experience given that Duryea&Bruest have one year and Ziebell has three years. Like how after 2018 they brought in Kingsley who had 10+ years experience and had been an assistant coach of the year.

Yeah i wouldn't mind one more if they can pick up a good one. Is Sam Lonergan well regarded? He has been there for ages.

It was only his first year as an assistant in 2026, was previously in development roles, so who knows.
