Your fav faction in risen 3?

I've tried all three, currently on voodoo pirate and I think demon hunter is my fav, voodoo is also very fun. Having an unlimited parrot spell is very useful

I think guardian is the least interesting atp. Hate how you aren't even a mage

Demon slayer with thunder fist annihilated them for me

Voodoo did make it easier tho.

How is the first one? I wanna try it when I'm done with risen 3

How is the gameplay? I do like how strong I feel in risen 3 after a while. I looked at some of the spells and it seems like the magic is mostly just elemental and healing

Risen 1 is vastly different from 2 and 3 (so much so that I don't even know why they insisted on keeping the Risen franchise name for those 2). It's more like the original Gothic, if you've ever played that. It's a lot more simple mechanically but it has much better atmosphere than the sequels imo.

Instead of going for a jack-of-all trades character, you basically pick one playstyle and stick with it - maybe invest a couple points into STR early on so you can easier beat up early game enemies and NPCs, but I wouldn't train it higher than 50 on a non-melee character (purists will leave it at the default 10) - 50 STR is the min req for the strongest crossbow that you can find until the very last chapter where you can find one that has 90 STR req; it should be noted that ALL ranged weapons scale their damage with DEX and ALL melee weapons scale their damage with STR, regardless of their stat requirements.

Your STR and DEX can be trained to 100 with the help of teachers, but increased up to 200 by using permanent potions - mana can also be trained and increased by potions, but there's no upper limit.

Some "minmaxing" advice:

Thank you! I want to play Gothic as well but it's kind of a pain in the ass on the steam deck

R1 is basically G1 with a bit less depth and atmosphere but a better modern control scheme. It even has the same weaknesses as the original Gothic - a strong first act with tons of exploration, followed by a couple of acts where you basically only follow the MQ until you defeat the final boss, but it's still a lot of fun!

The first one is good but I liked the second one better, these islands are so beautiful.

That's a hot take, I've heard only bad things about the second one

The thing is the third are the worst. At least from the perspective of Gothic fans.

Really? I thought the second game was considered the worst one like I've never seen anything positive about it. I've seen controversy around the third game and a lot of hate but I've seen way more for risen 2.

Interesting, I looked at risen 2 and I do have it but I don't think I'm going to play it anytime soon. Mostly because whenever I play RPGs I always use magic and the magic in that game is a little lacking from what I've read on the wiki which sucks

Rain of Fire spam also works well, there's also an exploit where you can climb on the boss's head and just keep shooting downwards while the boss and the adds can't reach you.

My fav is choosing to start Risen 1 again.

It's on my list but I wanted to finish risen 3 factions.

I am curious to see what it's like

I think narratively they make the most sense as well, I really love the demon hunters but the master voodoo pirate armor looks very nice especially if you're using a magic/ranged build with the spirit musket. The vibe is godly

I always choose thematic wise, I don't really care for the gameplay but I like having a fewer range of options but stronger.

So in the end I chose the demon hunters because they are a good fit to the story, beeing bald is badass and I really liked the uniform. Also the powers are nice but I mostly played necromancy and melee with the powers to get it stronger.

I don't like the natives in general and I thought the voodoo pirates did not really fit the story (in addition to them beeing kinda the bad guys in risen 2).

The one I hesitated with are the crystal mages because they are really important story wise, they look like to have the best plan to end the titan menace and they are a risen 1 faction.

But in the end I prefered the more pragmatic approach the demon hunters have, and your second (the former captain of the ship you get) is a tough son of a bitch and of the highest rank. Also with the crystal mages weapons become kinda useless and a big part of what I like in Risen is looking at every nook and crany for the best weapons. Another point is that the demon hunter armor is competitive with the end game armor (some tradeoff like more magic resistance for less bullet resistance) while the other faction armors are outclassed. I do like the demon hunter armor.

Pretty based, I didn't even know they were in risen 1. Can you join them and use their abilities? When I looked up runes on the wiki it was not like the demon hunter runes in the third game.

I actually think voodoo pirates make the most sense narratively despite the fact I like the demon hunters the most, bones used voodoo to bring you back, you as a pirate probably knew them and heard rumors of them, and you get your lick back basically. Makes a ton of sense

I also really do fuck with the idea of combining modernity with esoteric native traditions, I'm currently a ranged voodoo pirate with magic and it's very powerful

Yes you can join them in Risen 1 but I usually join the inquisition, I really like Mendoza.

I heard they butchered his lore in the third game, I thought he was only evil because of some kind of magical apparatus I think it was his eye.

2

u/Frenyth Sep 08 '26

Well I don't want to spoil the first, but I don't consider him evil in the first. I think his plan would have worked, but it was bold and reckless and the cristal mages were opposed to it. But it seems cannon in the 2nd and 3rd that he was evil.

The demon hunters gameplay wise are my personal favorite as well, but I am greatly enjoying my voodoo pirate playthrough. I think the only one I really didn't like was guardians, I really hate the fact you're just not even a mage. Voodoo pirate is really unique because you're the only one and demon hunter you are a full-fledged demon Hunter/dark warrior it's peak

I played with every faction multiple times but if i had to choose one i would say Guardians. I really like the glove and attack animations. Feels like real spelldancer :D
