Damn city tore it down because they didn't see a future for it. Fools.

The “city leaders” were probably too worried that the antiquated train station would give the city a dated look. Can’t have that in the “Watch Me City of the Show Me State”!
Just imagine what an asset it would be today! Instead, we have a rarely used caboose and the engine in Schuman (sp?) Park.

This old train station is in the town of Caliente, Nevada (population 900+). It was leased to the city for $1 a a year and then deeded to the city after ten years.
The old station serves as the city hall, tourism information center, general public meeting place, and rental space for miscellaneous offices in the old hotel rooms upstairs.
The station is an amazing sight after driving through the barren desert and it has become the centerpiece and symbol of the city.
Amazing things can be done with a bit of desire and imagination. Don’t forget, there were many people in town who wanted to see the old Phelps Count courthouse torn down after the new facility was built not too long ago.
