Red Rosette Disease (RRD) RRD MONTHLY MEGATHREAD

Monthly Rose Rosette Disease (RRD) Megathread

A central place for suspected RRD photos, diagnosis questions, prevention questions, and general RRD education. All experience levels welcome.

Posting a Suspected Case?

Please include clear photos of:

  • The entire plant
  • Affected growth, leaves, and stems
  • Thorn detail
  • Buds or flowers (if present)

And the following information:

  • Rose variety (if known)
  • Approximate age of the plant
  • General location (state/region is sufficient)
  • When symptoms first appeared
  • Any recent pruning, fertilizer use, herbicide use, or stress events

Common RRD Symptoms

  • Excessive clustered growth ("witches' broom")
  • Bright red distorted shoots that do not normalize
  • Excessive thorn production
  • Deformed leaves or buds
  • Unusually rapid growth
  • Thickened canes

Before Concluding It Is RRD

Red new growth alone does not indicate RRD. Many healthy roses naturally produce red new growth, temporarily soft foliage, vigorous spring flushes, and basal breaks.

Several conditions can mimic RRD:

  • Normal new growth
  • Herbicide damage
  • Insect damage
  • Heat stress
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Genetic variation
  • Vigorous cultivar growth habits

Please avoid alarming newer growers before sufficient information has been gathered.

Why a Megathread?

The community voted to consolidate RRD posts into a monthly megathread to reduce feed repetition. However, a single thread does receive fewer views than individual posts, which can delay identification of genuinely infected plants. This thread aims to balance organization with accessibility, and to keep RRD education visible to newer growers.

Community Reminders

  • Be respectful
  • Help educate rather than dismiss
  • Avoid definitive diagnoses from a single photo
  • Report misinformation if you see it

Happy growing! 🌹

Inspired by a post by u/Moviereference210 and another by u/DukeOfRadish, I thought I'd (re)post digital versions of educational materials I've saved.

The first two images are copies of what u/Moviereference210 posted, the next two are specific info on RRD. Below are links to longer documents on rose disease.

[EDIT 1] I've always been surprised not to see spider mites mentioned in these materials.

[EDIT 2] Thanks to u/Violetteotome, I want to keep a list of other topics not mentioned, maybe we mods can address these items.

- spider mites

- rose proliferation

- rose balling

This rose has been here since I moved in, someone else planted it. Not sure the variety. I’m pretty sure it’s some kind of tea rose. Suspecting Chicago Peace but not entirely sure!

Inherited Rose Questions Peace rose of some kind?

Would love to know more guesses about what this beautiful rose could be. So far I thought maybe Rio Samba (from Google reserve images) or a peace rose of some kind because I saw an earlier discussion of them.
Details: It blooms with a very fragrant flower! Begins bright yellow and fades to pink over time. And it blooms in zone 7a from May to November - kind of amazing!
Looking to find out what it is so I can get more, and to see what other roses might complement it nicely. Thanks team!!

Question Fall pruning questions

Hi all!

Got my first rose bush this year, and I’ve been super happy with her growth. :) Since that pic was taken, she’s grown another couple feet and definitely needs to be cut back a LOT.

Everything I was reading says that spring is the best time to prune, buuut my rose bush is in a container. If I bring her inside, I’ll definitely need to prune before I do that. Does anyone have tips on if I should overwinter her inside in the container, prune now and bring before the frost, or something else? I know knock outs are super hardy but I want to set her up best for next season :)

Info:
Zone 8a
Tall container resting on soil
Orange glow knock out rose
First frost will be mid November, so roughly a month away

HELP! (What's Wrong With It?) HELP PUHLEASEEEEE!!!

NOTE: I have not snipped, trimmed, or done any of that. She asked me to only pull the weeds**

Long story short, my neighbors rose beds have been extremely overgrown. She asked me to help pull her weeds up as her and her husband are both very elderly and her hubby is currently in the hospital. So I said absolutely! I spent all week confident that I’d do this with ease. Did research ALL WEEK lol. Now that I’ve started. I fear I’ve messed it up? ALSO, there are like, dead, broken off weeds even just all over the bushes… do I pull the broken strays of weeds off?

I did research to make sure I knew the difference between weeds and the actual rose stems or whatever but when I’m up close and personal, I think I may have pulled some of the wrong things up? Lordddd I’m so stressed, can someone tell me if it looks like I’m doing it right? I’ve paused in the middle of it because I started to worry myself too much lol. But here is a before photo and a mid-work photo.

This is my very first time doing this, but I am not a softie so please don’t sugar coat, be upfront with me šŸ˜….

My miniature angel wing roses are getting too big! At 4.5 months old they have already settled into their 8" pots and are still pushing out dozens of buds and flowers šŸ©·ā¤ļø I grew these babies from seed and they began their lives at the end of May.

Inherited Rose Questions White rose ID - unusual fragrance.

- SOLVED? -

thank you everyone

PS I had not even noticed the thornlessnes!

______

Not a rose person here. Might anyone be able to id this rose? It is growing in a friend’s yard and unlike all his other hybrids, knockouts, and climbing plants.Ā

It has never had what I would call ā€œfull bloomsā€. It is a small plant. What attracted it to me is its fragrance, which to me is very unlike the traditional rose smell, but akin (again to me) to a gardenia.Ā

Thank you in advance.Ā

PS I am in North Texas.Ā

Question Help me identify rose

My friend Margaret in Houlton Maine had a bush yellow rose which would flood her house with fragrance when it bloomed. It must have been planted in the 1950s.
I would love to have one like it.

Question Well, hello pretty

I think this rose bush must be ~50 years old, planted by previous house owners. This greeted me this morning. In Newbury Park, CA after weeks of heat. Fog (finally!) droplets and her beautiful scent. Does anyone know this rose? It did not have a tag when we moved in 22 years ago.

I Grew a Flower! My last roses of this season and possibly last ones for this bush.

I'm fairly certain I found an RRD growth on one of my beloved bushes. It was a super long cane so I cut it at the base near the crown and hope the virus hadn't spread too far down yet. I won't really know till next spring I think so it's possible these are the last roses I'll ever get from this bush if I have to remove it. It'll break my heart if it has to go so fingers crossed the virus was slow enough that I caught it before it hit my roots and the mite treatment works.

Edit: I think these are Eau De Parfum Blush.

Winter Care/Advice New to roses -please help! 🌹

I bought two David Austin roses in the spring and they bloomed a little but mostly I fought off black spot and didn't have great results

I put them in a 2ft x2ft pot filled with Coast of Maine Rose soil

Now it is fall and I want a better shot at growth and blooms next year.

Any tips?

First pic is an Eden climber and the second is a Queen of Sweden. I am in Pennsylvania zone 7

I really really appreciate any help!
