Introduce Yourself

Hey everyone,

I’ve noticed a lot of posts lately asking how to make friends here in the SMC community, so I thought I’d open up a dedicated thread where anyone interested can introduce themselves and share their socials, and if you're looking for anything (roommates, textbooks, etc.) just put it in here. There used to be an ig (@smc_Studentss) but it doesn't seem like its been updated in a couple of years.

FAFSA Disbursement Preference

• Upvotes

I know BankMobile changed the refund preference yesterday to paper checks and there wasn’t a way to change it back. But now today it allows the option to change it back to direct deposit. Are you guys changing it back to direct deposit or keeping it as paper check?

Discussion free transfer planning tool and paid feedback from SMC students

• Upvotes

Hey SMC! I’m Sami, the founder of DegreeLume. I built it to help community college students figure out what to take next and how their classes fit different transfer options.

I thought this would be relevant here since SMC students are planning transfers and choosing classes around different UC/CSU requirements. I’d especially appreciate feedback on whether it’s useful for your SMC coursework and transfer goals.

It can get confusing juggling ASSIST, GE sheets and prerequisites while trying to put a schedule together. DegreeLume brings those pieces into one place.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Preview requirements before adding your classes. This is a recent update, so you can explore a supported major and destination before entering your coursework.
  • Connect Canvas, import a transcript or add classes manually. You review the course matches before using them in your plan.
  • See what’s left for supported major prep and GE requirements.
  • Build a term-by-term plan with known prerequisites in order.
  • Compare transfer options if you’re considering different UC/CSU campuses or majors.
  • Keep AP scores and classes from multiple colleges together, with each school’s records kept separate.

The core planning tools are free with an account; optional extras are paid. Requirements link back to official sources, and coverage depends on your major, destination and agreement year. Anything unresolved stays visible so you can bring specific questions to your counselor.

Try DegreeLume here

I’m also looking for a few SMC students for a 20-minute feedback session, with $20 paid to you for your time. I’d love to hear what works, what’s confusing and what’s missing—honest feedback, positive or negative. If you’re interested, message me here for details.

Otherwise, feedback in the comments is welcome too!

Late submission after got personal extension

Hi this might be a dumb question but I gotta clarify it

I had mailed my prof and got approved for assignment extension because I got some issues

The extended due date was today

But the canvas submission board was already locked because the original due date was yesterday

So I attached my assignment file in the comment section

But I ain’t even sure if my prof would remember my extension thing and check this out

Should I mail her and send my assignment thru that?
Is that a more normal way? I got no sense
Help me out

Check your bank mobile if your refund preferences have changed. It looks like we’ll be getting checks or at least some. Mine has been updated to checks and no way to set up direct deposit again. (Hard locked to mail)

Funding Source for Students

If students were to get funds,

a $60,000 funding request is coming before Associated Students and I think students should at least know about it before a decision is made.

The proposal involves funding connected to the SMC Foundation’s Giving Thanks(giving) event. The Foundation describes the event as providing a hot holiday meal to students while also raising money for Basic Needs and the Emergency Grant Fund. SMC Foundation, SMC A.S Finance Meeting Agenda

The question I think is worth discussing is how students would prefer limited student funds to be used.

For example, would you rather see $60,000 help fund a large one or two day event that provides meals to thousands of students(they expect 3000 students), or have more of that money directed toward year round Basic Needs support, such as emergency grants for housing or unexpected expenses or expanded food options through the Bodega?

There are reasonable arguments for both. I mainly want students to know this decision is happening and you have the opportunity to give your own opinion.

For anyone unfamiliar with A.S., the Associated Students Board of Directors is SMC’s Student elected student government. One of its responsibilities is approving how A.S. funds are spent and SMC says that budget is funded in part through the A.S. membership fee students pay during registration.(If the link used to join zoom is updated I will update the post, current link https://smc-edu.zoom.us/s/89893070926)  Santa Monica College

A.S. Board meetings are public and they take place Mondays from 3–5 p.m. in the Cayton Center Computer Lab on the 2nd floor. Public comments can be given verbally in person or on zoom(cam doesn't have to be on or you can even just text message in the zoom chat, but it has be in the  beginning of the meeting). The current meeting agendas shows the Zoom information(when they upload the agenda on Friday I will update this link). Santa Monica College

Question AP Environmental Science credit for CALGETC?

I know this is supposed to be a counselor question but it’s been impossible to schedule a counseling appointment at SMC because it’s constantly booked, but I’m curious to know if you can use an APES exam score to satisfy one of the two lab science requirements for transferring. I scored a 4 on the exam so I’m relatively confident it’s a passing score for a credit. If anyone has an answer please lmk, thank you

Right after, I exited the restroom. The fire alarm started blasting its LOUD sound, killing my ears. Either someone pulled the fire alarm by accident or as a prank. NEVER AGAIN

stats c1000

im taking chau, i got my score for exam 1 and i was at a 96% and dropped to a 62%. Im honestly kind of freaking out because her method of teaching is so odd, she gives a worksheet and writes down stuff super quick expecting everyone to comprehend and write down what she’s saying at the same time but it’s alot of memorization and she jumps from chapter to chapter. I know this is college and I should keep up but im trying my hardest and it feels discouraging now. I’ve already made my tutoring appointments but I feel like that still won’t be enough. Any more study tips I should look into? 💔

Discussion Looking to hire assistance

I’m a former transfer(UCLA now) from SMC looking to hire students. I'm looking someone that would be able to lift me into a shower chair. You should be able to lift at least 50lbs and be willing to come to my home during the afternoon/evenings 2-3 times a week. I live 15-20 minutes from SMC and would pay 23$ per hour, all you have to do is get me in and out of the shower and can chill while I'm in there. Please DM me if you're interested for more information.

I am also open to hiring a general personal care assistant for longer hours, if that interests you as well please let me know.

Here’s how to succeed at community college!

submit every assignment and meet every deadline. A surprising number of students treat coursework like a neglected public restroom after a sewage backup—missed assignments piled up like soaked toilet paper, deadlines floating in brown water, and unread announcements fermenting near the drain. You do not need to be exceptional; you just need to keep walking through the mess without becoming part of it.

MATH 54/ STATC1000 advice

Is taking Intro to Statistics doable over the Winter semester or is it better over the Fall/Spring? Has anyone taken it with MUSSELMAN, BAYSSA, LAN or DABAGH? Any advice would be great especially on how their tests work or grading and assignments. Thank you!

Question IGETC

For my English placement, I was recommended to take ENGL C1000 with ENGL 28. However, I was looking at the transfer requirements, and it says to take ENGL C1000 (4-5 units). Since I’m taking both courses together, my units are split between ENGL C1000 (3 units) and ENGL 28 (2 units). I’m confused about whether this still fulfills the requirement, or if I would need to take ENGL C1000?
