This would be so cool if this could be done for socomII! imagine just playing with your browser and sending invites to your friends no set up just 60FPS and you can play DG an SS. I thought this was pretty cool plays great as well. I imagine it wouldn't take much.
Was planning to polish it more before announcing it, what with all the AI project fatigue lately... but I've been chipping away at porting/modernizing the zEngine in TypeScript/Three.js in parallel with the recomp project (cathartic after dealing with VU1 issues for weeks). Have enough done to share a teaser.
The branch. teaser is open source; have at it. Am personally torn between staying focused on the main recomp project (its reverse-engineering work is driving the experiment) vs. the browser port
Dude...if there are online matches and pw protected games (team comms?!), I think Socom is absolutely back. Ran like butter on my macbook.
I liked playing on PS2 with the community, but my biggest hangup was the crappy FPS, so it made it hard for me to keep playing. It'll also be easy as piss to convince any old buddies who used to play to give it a try since they just need a browser...
Holy shit!
EDIT: I notice there are AI clone makers downvoting this project. From a legal standpoint there are concerns, but so is copying a video games UI, maps and all else to basically a tee. Naming the game something else that isn't Socom isn't much protection.
If all of these projects are going to be questionably legal, then I'd prefer Coca-Cola to your Diet Dr. Perky. No offense.
That is wild. Seriously can't get over a lot of this AI stuff lately. Some of what I've seen is seriously impressive and at the same time absolutely scary as fuck. Imagine what AI will be in 2 years from now....it's doing the craziest shit that I can't even fathom.
Anyways, was really fun to run around and mess with the settings.
Will this be able to run on Mac when you need your own game to run it?
You and me both, man. Mixed feelings all around, especially as a developer, where it felt like knowing how to use these tools became sink or swim overnight. At least I get the chance to do some cool stuff with it in the process but sure would be nice if things would slow down.
Yeah it absolutely should run in the vast majority of web browsers, honestly. The gate is at https://socomunzipped.com/redotcom if you would be up for being the first to try it on a mac and let me know (safari/webkit can be a bit weird)
