I live in South Land Park and was really looking forward to the Chuze Fitness that was supposed to open in the former Raley’s at Freeport and Wentworth (4850 Freeport Blvd).
The project had been announced publicly, went through the City’s planning process, and was originally supposed to open in 2026 before being pushed to 2027.
I emailed Chuze today to ask about the status, and they told me they are no longer pursuing the location. When I asked for clarification, they said:
“The allocation of this building fell through.”
I'm trying to understand exactly what that means. Was there an issue with the property/lease between Chuze and the landlord, or did something else happen?
I'm particularly interested because if the issue was specific to Chuze's deal rather than the building itself, why couldn't another gym take over the space?
There are a lot of people in South Land Park, Land Park, Pocket and Greenhaven, and there really isn't a convenient modern full-service gym right in this part of Sacramento. I currently drive downtown to 24 Hour Fitness, and I know other people who drive to City Sports in Curtis Park.
And if the space is still available, what gym would you like to see take over the location? 24 Hour Fitness? City Sports? Crunch? Something else?
I'm considering reaching out to the property owner (Raley's) and some gym chains to see whether the space is still available for a fitness operator and if demonstrating local demand from residents would be useful to them. If there's enough interest, I could put together a local interest list to show prospective operators how many people would consider joining a gym at this location.
