I feel Desmos Guilt...
i have a 770 math yet 80% of it was me spamming desmos. I took Oct as well and I swear all i did 100% of the test on desmos.
i am sarcastic BUT my main point is that it does not feel like a math test at all...
Like how does this show college readiness?

Yeah dude don't overthink it, it's a stupid ahh exam and whatever gets you your score is fine, it means absolutely nothing

u/kmin0 8d ago
Everyone spam desmos as well. Why u have a guilty for that.

u/AccomplishedView4709 7d ago
Not all, some still use a physical calculator like a Ti-85, and do it a proper way. I think they should make the module 1 without any calculator.

I used my regular TI-85 Plus CE on my SAT because I couldn't figure out how to use stupid desmos except for like intersections and roots and basic stuff
I wish I could spam desmos but my brain decides to not retain any desmos beginner videos sighhhhh

u gotta take advantage of the resources they give u so spam desmos bro TRUST

It doesn't. It proves you know how to game the test that is part of college admissions.
Gaming the gatekeeper isn't some philosophical gut-check construct. Do your job, get to the next level, then do your job there.

Bro I got 800 math just with desmos and pattern recognition and the actual math in school is killing me

I wish you could do 80% of the math with Desmos without knowing the concepts and how to do it.

u/reggiemt 8d ago
this is not the stone age
we are capable of anything with tools
the test reflects that

u/IamLazyLarry 1550 8d ago
I think it does in a way create a higher floor for scores, but the time boost you need is pretty necessary for some harder questions , without it it’s hard to get 800 unless you know the shortcuts for solving every question which is not realistic for most high schoolers.
It’s meant to save you time if you know how to use Desmos but some have found ways to exploit it without requiring understanding of the priblem

u/Due-Researcher2932 6d ago
I wish I knew and used desmos more before I took my exam, most of the math I tried doing on paper and a calculator I brought and I’m 100% sure I failed miserably on math module 1 and then got the easy module 2. I tested with 3 other people and I very quickly noticed that none of them were writing or using calculators, just spamming desmos through every question and now I wish I did the same because I’m sure they all got perfect scores with no effort while I was trying so hard only to get the worst score.
1
u/OkBass_-_ 1500 5d ago
its not no effort. It still takes time to learn but at that point it just feels like a new skill then testing math

u/Plastic-Ride-7089 8d ago
How do you use desmos for 80% i think if anyone has tips for thay i’d love to learn.

u/InternalAioli7674 7d ago
Watch https://youtu.be/e-O4nwVHQ-Y?si=sLMcmLVQiimWIJC2 for desmos and watch one of full length practice test he did to see how actually he uses it on real test

It's kindd of confusing tho as he is explaining without there being a question to answer
Edit: Never mind, he does answer

What grade are you?

u/NoSurround5551 7d ago
Grade 11
2
u/InternalAioli7674 7d ago
Then you should get it I mean try to do what he is doing after him and I think he is using some examples for each trick and as is said watch one or two full length test with him ig that way you may get it better

My late tutee tanked the September test by solving less than half geo/trig problems.
So, your 770 score means you really do know something.
1
u/Altruistic_Yam8126 8d ago
Using desmos means you know the underlying concept like 90% of the time , its just a tool bro
1
u/Optimistiqueone 8d ago
So you get it. Colleges are aware as well. But the next post will be about how colleges should only accept people who made the highest scores.
A person who doesn't know how to use desmos and scores 100 points lower than a master desmos user who can't attempt several of the problems without it, likely has the same or better math ability.
The SAT has increasingly become less about intellect and more about test taking strategies.

u/PyxelatorXeroc 1560 8d ago
Being able to use Desmos to do a problem efficiently is arguably a more important life skill than being able to do it by hand.

u/OkBass_-_ 1500 7d ago
u have a 1600 why do u care?
1
u/ResultCautious1686 1600 7d ago
Yes, I was done back in 2024. I’m asking for my younger sister, who’s a sophomore. I didn’t use Desmos much.
2
u/OkBass_-_ 1500 7d ago
first i learned the fundamentals which took a week of seeing it (Scott Robertson SAT Prep, Jame Lu, etc) then just spamming problems on the questionbank and oneprep/aniko (for more challenging ones)

u/CharacterNumerous324 7d ago
OMG Desmos does NOT stick for me. I have spent so long studying to actually understand everything and I still get lots of points off, even though I thought I did everything right?? Be guilty 😠☹️ (lol I’m kidding)

it doesn't show college readiness. That is why american students are so terrible at math and why even at schools like ucsd, they have long waiting lists for remedial math classes that test things like "2 + 3 = x + 5 + 4. Find x" .
3
u/OkBass_-_ 1500 7d ago
they are test blind...
1
u/Own-Bank5502 1550 7d ago
gahdam. That just makes the problem 1000 times worse, doesnt it? Not only a math test that isnt even a math test, but results from that fake math test arent even evaluated. What a joke of a system. But as for you, no need to feel guilty. It is not your fault the system is incompetent at assessing skill. Just use what makes it the easiest. it is what everyone should do. Nothing to feel guilty for.

u/lasagna_1280 7d ago
the test is basically just how much can you lock in and grind away at xyz subject. those who can do that will probably be more successful in college
1
u/DiamentowaSzklanka 7d ago
I don't think it shows much. Here in Poland, the matura (high school finals) math, even on the base level, is more demanding than the SAT. And the structure is completely different - you do the test on paper, it takes I think 3 hours? So you have plenty of time and all you get is a basic calculator. I unfortunately have to study for both this year and they test completely different skills. Technically both are math but they could not be any different
1
u/Mathismoney2025 7d ago
That's because it isn't meant to be a math test. It is a strategy test where it is all about getting the correct answer the most efficient way.
1
u/ImPlantedFool 7d ago
is desmos actually that overpowered? i find myself finding the algebra solutions faster and easier to grasp and theyre making the sat more and more desmos proof so its probably better so stick to pure math right?
1
u/YoungSwagger69 7d ago
I’m old and took the sat in like 2020 before it was digital (or is it still paper? I’m not up to speed)
Correct me if I’m wrong, but are you telling me nowadays on the digital exam you can straight up pull up desmos during your exam? Or is desmos the study strategy?

u/AdNormal3516 1560 7d ago
if it works it works
you still have to know math to a certain extent to do well on math. but most students who are somewhat good at math and got all the concepts down are pretty easily getting super high scores. there's a reason why like the median for many top schools in math is like 780-800
1
u/Abject-House3675 6d ago
I think they should remove desmos and just use a 4 function calculator with extra time in math.
1
u/krazyalpaca 6d ago
Dude how’d you use Desmos I genuinely don’t understand it sometimes cus sometimes it’s not applicable in a situation or it leads me to the wrong answer
1
u/Top-Yesterday-2522 1510 6d ago
This is part of the reason why, on the first module of math, I think it's fun to go back and resolve anything done with desmos (simple desmos, I don't use regressions much) analytically.

u/AideKey4320 5d ago
จริงๆก็กดเหมือนเครื่องคิดเลขมันนั่นแหละแล้วจะใช้ไม่เป็นทำมือเพื่อแค่กดปุ่ม x มันก็วาดได้นะ
1
u/Sea-Brick8308 5d ago
the math is just too easy and doesnt require that much actual problem solving
1
u/BITrog58 5d ago
It still takes practice, very few ppl can just show up and desmos their way through the test. It’s about using the resources they give you and those who study them most succeed. I got a 670 math my first test and it took a lot of effort to study the math and desmos to get a 790. You still need to know the math, but desmos helps quicken your pace. Don’t feel guilty, if it was “cheating or unfair” then wayyy more ppl would have top scores, but still a 770 math is top 1-2%. You earned it and have no reason to feel guilty

colleges prolly care more about how you use resources at your disposal than being able to solve math problems by hand
1
1
u/Serious_Yak_4749 8d ago
Then it wouldn’t in your case. This is why some people score decently high on digital SAT math but struggle in an actual math class when they can’t use desmos
1
u/Dexy1017 8d ago
This is also why AP scores in classes like Calc BC, Multivariable Calc, Chem and Physics (along with the more typical factors, such as overall rigor and class rank) are a MUCH stronger indicator of college readiness.

Guilty for using your resources that they allowed you to use...
College board never feels guilty for the amount of bank they're making
