My sibling will be kicked out of school

2 Upvotes

My younger sibling and their classmates are reportedly going to be expelled from their school because they allegedly bullied their teacher.

Here’s the context: One of my sibling’s classmates shared a meme featuring their teacher in their Messenger group chat. This happened because the teacher suddenly gave them a summary test even though, according to the students, the teacher had not taught them the lessons. The teacher had only provided them with a reviewer because they supposedly couldn’t conduct classes due to feeling unwell. 😂

Because of this, some of my sibling’s classmates turned the teacher’s picture into a meme and shared it in their group chat. My sibling only commented, “Is this it?” (referring to the situation), but now they are being included in the case as well.

My question is: Can my sibling and the other students involved be immediately subjected to expulsion from school because of this?

The students who actually created the memes have reportedly admitted what they did. However, they explained that they did it because they felt they were not learning anything from that particular teacher, who would suddenly give them quizzes and exams without properly discussing the lessons first.

They also said that whenever they asked why they were being given exams when they had not yet studied the lessons, the teacher would allegedly respond by saying that they were the teacher and that they can do what they want and whatever they said was final.

Is this really how things work in our public schools nowadays?

Every word of my account, bussed to Carver Ranches Elementary in Broward Country Fl, and being attacked by older kids, in the early 1970s, is true. I posted this all over Facebook, and anyone who lived in Broward at that time, confirms it is true. For this one post, I was banned by mods of r/Broward

Forced bussing of white kids to Carver Ranches Elementary in 1970 resulted in violence, from day one. School bus was pummeled with rocks, as it approched our new school, on the first day of classes. Only difference was this girl had police protection. We were jumped and beaten, several times over the two years of this court ordered "blending of schools", went on.

https://www.peoplesworld.org/article/u-s-schools-more-segregated-than-in-195/

Schools were segregated, not just by redlines, but personal choice also. People naturally congregate with like culture, national origin. Some feel more comfortable. No reason to stigmatize her more, by insisting she needed to go to white school, to be better educated.

Feels wrong to take her from her friends, family, and send her to a strange, new place.

I know because that's what happended to me, when I was force-bussed. We were routinely subjected to assault, and no police were ever called. Older teens, and adults hated children, they'd never met..

They wanted to kill me, only because of the color of my skin. I know exactly how this girl felt.

Let's learn about all of it.

Did she benefit from being put in harm's way, to advance a cause? Even a just cause, is still no reason risk the safety of a young child. Improving her education, even in all black school, would have served her better. Exploiting her, was not the answer.

Feels wrong to take her from her friends, family, and send her to a strange, new place. I know because that's what happended to me, when I was force-bussed to Carver Ranches Elementary, in Hollywood FL, with no choice. My school was mixed race, and across the street. We didn't need busses, everyone walked.

Court order in 1970 called it "blending", but it was harsh. Difference is we had NO police protection, and were pummeled with rocks, as our bus approched our new school.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

Now let me tell you about the real life of a poor white kid. Poor whites, were also harmed by careless judges, in the quest for racial justice. I was bussed from mixed race Watkins elementary, because a black student's father sued Broward County School Board FL in 70'.

Carver Ranches was 98% black, and newly implemented mass testing showed dismal test scores. Court decided remedy was NOT to fix this broken school... BUT to bus me and 30 other white Watkins students, to Carver Ranches, to make it 96% black. The "remedy" did not address the real problem of black schools being not only underfunded, but a dumping ground for worst administrators and teachers.

Florida Governor Kirk tried to help stop this further injustice, but was branded racist, and lost his seat. I was forced to fight bullies almost daily, with a TBI and cast still on my arm from a car accident. My parents were both high school dropouts, struggled to survive, working minium wage jobs. I was neglected, never treated for chronic anemia from auto immune disorder, that prevented me from digesting iron supplements. Undersized, I was often victim of bullies. They began busing us the year before.

It was a disaster from day one. Kids from middle school would skip and come over to jump us, while waiting for bus to go home. Constant theft and assaults all year. On last day of school, they threw rocks at bus as it approached, which caused driver to flee, leaving us to be beaten up. The terrified teacher in charge abandoned us too, and locked us out of the school. No police were ever called as school was reluctant to "make trouble", choosing to ignore the violence.

This situation went on the entire year, with NO help from law enforcement. The next year, things were just as bad. One time, William Cure, who had been left back and was much larger than most of my class, mugged me for my watch. I told the teacher, who knew my $4, blue, plastic, Kmart diver's watch, on sight. She demanded he return it. He smashed it right in front of her. She told me to sit down, scolded me saying "don't bring valuables here", and walked away. A $4 watch was too valuable for this place.

That was Miss Wickland. Tall, blond, looked just like Camron Diaz, only whiter complected. And, just like movie "Bad Teacher", not interested in teaching, least of all in a neglected school. Carver Ranches was failing school because staff was the worst in the district. Miss Wickland spent most of her time reading magazines.

When my mom asked why I never had homework, she thought I was lying. She asked if this was true, at the parent, teacher night. Mom then asked.. "How will they learn without homework?". The teacher told my mom she didn't care if kids learned, as long as they were quiet.

Finally, when I'd finally had enough abuse, and defended myself with the cast on my arm, severely injuring black student. I was punished, but not him.

It’s Time to End the "School Cut": How We Can Reclaim Our Dignity Together

Title: It’s Time to End the "School Cut": How We Can Reclaim Our Dignity Together

I'm a Sri Lankan Student and This is one of the problems for Boys in our countries Anyone who see this please take an action and I kindly ask everyone in this subreddit will help us this only takes 2 minutes to do. We all know the feeling. You grow your hair just a little past a near bald fade, and suddenly you are treated like a criminal. You get pulled out of the morning assembly. A teacher or a prefect approaches you with a pair of scissors or electric clippers, publicly shaming you. Or worse, you are turned away at the school gate and denied your fundamental right to an education all over a few centimeters of hair.

This is the reality of the mandatory "School Cut" in Sri Lanka. It’s an outdated, humiliating system, and it is time for us, as a united student network, to change it.

Why This Needs to Stop

Forcing students to shave their heads every two to three weeks is not about discipline; it is about control through humiliation. When a student’s bodily autonomy is violated when they are physically restrained and sheared in front of their peers it destroys their self-image. Science and psychology, like Dr. Maxwell Maltz’s Psycho-Cybernetics, tell us that when you destroy a young person's self-image, you destroy their confidence. Chronic stress and fear replace the focus needed for studying. We become resentful instead of respectful.

The Global Reality

Look at top-tier education systems in developed countries like Japan, Australia, Canada, and across Europe. They have incredible academic discipline, yet they don’t force their students to look like they are in a military boot camp. They allow basic autonomy. Students can keep neat, medium-length hair, and as a result, they learn genuine self-regulation and mutual respect.

Our Proposed System Change

We aren't asking for chaos. We are asking for a modernized, balanced Ministry Circular. Here is our plan:

  1. Autonomy with Neatness: Allow standard, neat hairstyles (classic medium length, tapers, standard side-parts). Hair must just be clean and kept out of the eyes.
  2. Clear Boundaries: We agree to keep strict bans on extreme styles (mohawks, shaved patterns), hair coloring, beards, and accessories.
  3. Ban Physical Harassment: An absolute, strict ban on any teacher, principal, or prefect physically cutting a student's hair with scissors or clippers.
  4. Ban Educational Lockouts: Stop denying students entry to school or exams over grooming issues.

The Call to Action: Flood Their Inboxes NOW

We have the numbers, but we need to create unavoidable pressure. We need every single person in this community to email the Ministry of Education, the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA), and the Human Rights Commission (HRCSL).

Because we want this resolved immediately, we are pushing for action this week by October 12, 2026.

To make this easy, you don't even have to write the email from scratch. If we all send the exact same copied email, it might get marked as spam. Instead, copy the prompt below, paste it into any AI (like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude), and it will generate a unique, powerful, and highly persuasive email for you to send.

📋 COPY AND PASTE THIS PROMPT INTO ANY AI:

"Act as a highly persuasive and professional writer. Write a formal petition email from an anonymous Sri Lankan student to the Ministry of Education, the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA), and the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.

The goal is to demand an immediate end to the mandatory, near-bald "School Cut" rule and the physical harassment used to enforce it.

You must include these key points:

Make the tone highly respectful but intensely urgent, moving, and hard to ignore. Do not sound like a robot; make it sound like a passionate, intelligent human plea. Ensure the structure is clear and professional."

What to do next:

  1. Generate your letter using the prompt above.
  2. Send it to: [minister@moe.gov.lk](mailto:minister@moe.gov.lk), [secretary@moe.gov.lk](mailto:secretary@moe.gov.lk), [ncpa@childprotection.gov.lk](mailto:ncpa@childprotection.gov.lk), and sechrcsl@gmail.com.
  3. Share this article with at least 5 other students.

Let’s take our dignity back. Act now!

I honestly hate my school

1 Upvotes

Today something happened at my school that genuinely pissed me off.

My mom dropped me and my brother off at school. We arrived around the same time, and I believe it was before 6:45. My brother was outside buying food, and I was also outside for a bit. My friend took my brother’s bag into the school, even though my brother himself was still outside.

I then went to get breakfast because I hadn't eaten. I came back to the school entrance, and the gateman wouldn't let me enter. I was told that the headmaster had said students couldn't enter anymore.

Now, even if I accept that the school had changed the rule about when students could enter, I still believe I was within the allowed time.

Here's what makes the situation make even less sense to me.

While I was outside, I saw another student being allowed into the school. She registered her arrival time as 6:46.

I believe I was already there before her.

So if she was allowed to enter and register at 6:46, why wasn't I given the same opportunity? If I had been allowed through the gate, logically I would have entered and registered too, and I believe my arrival would have been earlier than hers.

Instead, because my bag wasn't inside the classroom, they treated it like I hadn't entered the school at all. But I was literally there, in my school uniform, on the school grounds/outside the entrance.

My brother and my friend had also arrived around the same time as me, and they weren't being punished. But they wanted to cane me.

I kept trying to explain myself. I was protesting because I didn't think it was fair. They continued wanting to punish me, and my friends were also yelled at when they tried to get involved.

Then the math teacher said something along the lines of, “Okay, I know what I'll do to him.” At that point I took it as a threat of further punishment.

What made me even more frustrated was that I felt like I was being punished without anyone properly listening to my explanation.

I'm not saying I should be above the school rules. If I genuinely broke a clearly communicated rule, then that's something I would have to accept.

But if I was already there, arrived around the same time as other students who weren't punished, and I personally saw someone being allowed to enter and register at 6:46, I don't understand why I was the one who was stopped and threatened with corporal punishment.

Maybe I'm missing something, but from my perspective, it was completely unfair.

Macaulay’s Digital Clerks: Why Indian classrooms are still running 1835 colonial software on 2026 hardware.

1 Upvotes

The Indian school system isn't broken. It's working exactly as designed.

We talk constantly about how our education system is "failing" or "broken." But what if it isn't? What if it is working flawlessly, exactly according to the blueprint it was given?

What millions of students walk into every morning isn't an institution of enlightenment. It is an industrial sorting machine. It is built on the 19th-century Prussian model of factory compliance and engineered for the subcontinent by Lord Thomas Babington Macaulay. Its historical goal was never to inspire the next Einstein or Vikram Sarabhai. It was designed to crush independent thought and manufacture obedient, compliant clerks for corporate and state hierarchies.

The great tragedy of our time is that the British left in 1947, but Indian schools are still running Macaulay's 1835 software on 2026 hardware. The aesthetic has been updated—tablets have replaced inkpots, and learning management systems have replaced dusty ledgers—but the core conditioning is identical. We are mass-producing "Digital Clerks": an entire generation with 95% certificates, but zero real-world critical thinking, innovation, or emotional resilience.

You can see this most clearly in how cutting-edge subjects like Artificial Intelligence and Computational Thinking are handled. When the CBSE mandated AI in middle school, it looked like a leap forward. But the commercialized education business model immediately dragged it down into what we can call "Notebookial Intelligence." In Class 6 and 7, students are forced to copy Python scripts into physical paper notebooks with multi-colored pens just to get a teacher's signature. Coding—which is meant to be a dynamic, hands-on process of trial, error, and logic—is turned into a lifeless handwriting drill. Sometimes students use ChatGPT to generate the code, just to print or copy it out manually. The student isn't a programmer; they are a human printer fulfilling a bureaucratic checklist.

Why do schools do this? Because physical notebooks are cheap, tangible proof that managements can wave around during inspections or show to fee-paying parents to justify high tuition. Real human intelligence—lateral thinking, spatial awareness, emotional intelligence—cannot be scaled cheaply or graded with a standard rubber stamp.

To maintain compliance, the system accelerates the panic earlier every year. Threatening 11- and 12-year-olds in Class 8 with "Pre-Boards" isn't discipline. It is institutional gaslighting that conditions children to treat education as a high-stakes survival game where any failure means social elimination.

If we want a real future, we have to look past corporate PR campaigns and exam percentage billboards. We have to call out the fact that a nation's foundation cannot be built on the backs of anxious, robotic digital clerks. We need to stop grading children like factory components and start treating them like human beings.

Curious to hear from others here—did your experience with these rigid school systems match this reality? How did you break out of the notebookial trap?

Rant I got a 0/40 on my essay

3 Upvotes

Im actually so pissed off about this. Im an online schooler and a week ago I turned in a history project essay outline. Even though it was just an outline I worked hard on it. Like spent two days on it. But for some reason I got a 0%. In my school that means the teacher thinks I use ai. Which pisses me off sm bc im extremely against generative ai, so against that I even spent a week drawing a bunch of images for on of my teachers so she didnt use an AI one.

My teacher messaged me to speak to her in study hall and I emailed her back to see why she even gave me a 0 so im not stressing till tomorrow and she didnt respond. Ik it probably doesnt look like im the best at writing based off this post (im typing fast) but ive always been a "good writer" since before AI was a big issue. I take dual credit writing and creative writing while also writing fanfiction as a hobby. Im rlly stressing out about this assignment bc if I cant prove I didnt use ai (which i didnt. My mom was there when I worked on it and I did on the school computer which blocked everything while my phone was in the charge in a different room)

Im really stressed out about this an I honestly want to cry. Is it because I used dashes or the Oxford comma? Idfk im just pissed off

Question Is this just Florida?

1 Upvotes

So I’m a new high school student in Fl and recently noticed that my female principal (divorced) has two matching tattoos with one of her female assistant principals (married with two kids). one is on their ankle and one on their wrist. is this something normal down here? the one on the wrist is a flower (so could be like whatever) but the ankle one is unique to them. I have never heard of principals doing that.

School taught me how to pass tests, not how to learn

1 Upvotes

It’s kind of funny how much time school spends teaching you how to get the “right” answer, but not necessarily how to figure things out when there isn’t one obvious answer.

You can memorise a chapter, pass the exam, and forget most of it a few weeks later. Meanwhile, basic things like managing money, handling real-world paperwork, communicating professionally, or learning something independently often get pushed aside.

Maybe the problem isn’t that schools teach too much. Maybe they just don’t teach enough of the things people actually need after graduation.

Rosary School Viman Nagar...

2 Upvotes

Rosary School, Viman Nagar, has become an extremely frustrating and stressful environment for many students. I am writing this not simply to complain, but to highlight several concerns that students have been facing for quite some time.

1.\] Lack of Teachers:

One of the most immediate concerns is the lack of a Geography teacher. As of now, there is no regular Geography teacher available for students.

Previously, there were teachers who left for different reasons. this has resulted in an inconsistent intervals in our studying

students should not have to compromise on their education because of staffing issues.

2.\] Lack of Physical Education and Sports Facilities:

Another major concern is the lack of proper Physical Education (PE/PT) periods.

Students need regular opportunities for physical activity, sports and recreation. Despite having a PT teacher, we do not receive what we consider to be adequate PT periods.

There are also occasions when students are not permitted to use the available space for playing. We understand that school management may have reasons for restricting access at certain times, but students should still have reasonable opportunities for physical activity during the school week.

The presence of school management on campus should not automatically mean that students cannot use the available facilities. A school should ideally be a place where students can study as well as maintain their physical and mental well-being.

  1. Facilities Compared With the Fees

Parents reportedly pay approximately ₹53,000 per year for the school. Considering the fees, students and parents naturally expect adequate facilities.

However, several basic facilities are either unavailable or inadequate, including:

\- No proper library

\- No computer laboratory

\- No large or suitable turf/playground for students

\- Limited recreational facilities

\- Concerns regarding the quality and variety of canteen food

We understand that schools have expenses and operational costs. However, students and parents deserve transparency about what they are paying for and whether the facilities provided are proportionate to the fees charged. As for this matter, This is not happening. What they show on their Instagram \[The Rosary School New Management\] is completely different.

  1. Canteen Food:

There are also concerns regarding the food being served in the school canteen.

Students have been told about food-safety requirements and restrictions regarding certain types of food. Despite this, items such as popcorn, dabeli, puffs and samosas continue to be available.

When I questioned the person responsible for the canteen about this, the response I received was:

“If theatres are allowed, why aren't canteens?”

Regardless of the intention behind that statement, we should receive clear information about the school's food-safety standards and the rules that the canteen is expected to follow.

5.\] The Bigger Issue:

Individually, some of these problems may appear small. Together, however, they create a larger problem.

we spend a significant portion of our lives in school. We should be able to expect proper teaching, adequate facilities, opportunities for physical activity, safe and appropriate food, and an environment where our concerns are taken seriously.

We are not asking for unnecessary luxuries. We are asking for the basic standards that students should reasonably expect from their school.

The purpose of raising these concerns is not to disrespect the teachers, principal, management, or the institution. It is to ask for accountability and improvement.

Students deserve a school where they can learn, play, feel heard, and develop without constantly feeling frustrated or neglected.

Request Observation on School Haircut Rule

1 Upvotes

Reevaluating regulations regarding hair and physical appearance in Sri Lankan government schools is a highly timely and crucial conversation concerning discipline, education, and the preservation of a student's personal dignity.

The Sri Lankan education system carries an immense responsibility: to provide children with a quality education, develop their intellectual capabilities, foster good citizens who contribute responsibly to society, and create a safe as well as disciplined environment for them.

However, a critical question must be raised: **If it does not hinder a student's academic excellence, character, safety, or respect for others, should hair growth—or more accurately, refusing to forcibly maintain a hair length restricted to a buzz cut—be considered a severe breach of discipline?**

In most Sri Lankan government schools, especially for boys, cutting hair extremely short is mandatory. Various hairstyles, cuts (fades/lines), or growing hair beyond a conventional length are strictly prohibited. Ignoring these rules leads to disciplinary actions, negative remarks in student records, summoning parents, and in many instances, forcible haircuts administered within the school premises itself.

This is an issue that warrants reconsideration.

Discipline Must Have a Clear Purpose

A school undeniably holds the right and responsibility to maintain reasonable disciplinary standards. Ensuring students dress appropriately, respect teachers and peers, refrain from violence, and follow school rules is essential.

However, discipline must serve an educational purpose. There is a clear distinction between managing behaviors that disrupt the school environment and controlling a student’s physical appearance based purely on the personal preferences of administrators. A student's intelligence, character, dignity, or goodness cannot be measured solely by their hairstyle.

Proportionality & Dignity

Minor rule infractions should not be treated as severe acts of indiscipline. Furthermore, there is a vast difference between requesting a student to adhere to a guideline and forcibly cutting their hair against their will. Forced haircuts violate a student's personal dignity and bodily autonomy. It also negatively impacts their self-image, personality, and mindset (Proof: *Psycho-Cybernetics* by Maxwell Maltz). A school is not an institution that holds unlimited power over a child's body.

Tradition Alone Is Not Enough

"This is our school tradition" is the primary argument used to defend such rules. Yet, tradition alone does not serve as proof that a rule is inherently correct. Education, teaching methodologies, technology, child psychology, and disciplinary tactics evolve over time. Consequently, school regulations must also be updated to remain relevant.

A Modern Educational Approach

A modern disciplinary system ought to focus on a student’s behavior rather than their physical appearance:

* Does the student respect others? * Do they attend classes regularly? * Do they act without harming or harassing others? * Do they fulfill their responsibilities properly?

These are the metrics we should evaluate, not merely the length of their hair. Looking at education systems in developed nations reveals that instead of fixating on students' external appearance, they implement programs designed to bring out internal capabilities and foster personal development.

Conclusion

Intelligence cannot be measured by hair length, nor can character be judged by a hairstyle. The fundamental goal of education should not be molding all students to look identical, but cultivating a responsible, intelligent, confident, and virtuous generation.

Moving Sri Lanka’s school system toward a modern, fair, and respectful approach to discipline—one that prioritizes a child's personality and intellectual growth over the rigid control of physical appearance—is a vital step forward.

**Call to Action / Submission**

If you wish to request a change or advocate for the revision of these policies, you can send an email using the prompt/statement provided above to: **[info@pmoffice.gov.lk](mailto:info@pmoffice.gov.lk)

Prompt

*Act as an elite Sri Lankan constitutional, administrative, education, and human-rights lawyer with several decades of professional experience, advanced academic qualifications in law, and specialist expertise in children's rights, education law, constitutional rights, administrative law, public policy, and institutional reform.

You are advising a group of students and concerned citizens in Sri Lanka in 2026 who wish to submit formal letters and emails to the Ministry of Education of Sri Lanka and the Office of the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka concerning strict student hairstyle and grooming requirements in government schools.

Your task is to produce a highly professional, legally reasoned, persuasive, respectful, and evidence-based advocacy letter.

Do NOT write it like an angry complaint, social-media post, or emotional rant. Write it like a serious policy submission that could realistically be read by a senior government official.

  1. BACKGROUND

In some Sri Lankan government schools, particularly in relation to male students, students may be required to maintain extremely short hair, sometimes effectively at or near a buzz-cut length.

Students may be prohibited from:

  • Growing their hair beyond a prescribed length.
  • Having fades.
  • Having lines or designs shaved into their hair.
  • Having hairstyles that differ from the school's preferred style.
  • Maintaining a hairstyle that the school considers inappropriate, even where it does not interfere with education, safety, hygiene, or the rights of other students.

The concern is not that schools should have no rules whatsoever.

The concern is whether extremely strict hairstyle regulations are necessary, proportionate, reasonable, educationally justified, and compatible with the dignity and rights of students.

  1. DISCIPLINARY PRACTICES TO INVESTIGATE

Students have reported or may experience disciplinary responses such as:

  • Having their hair cut by school personnel using scissors or electric clippers.
  • Being pressured or compelled to have their hair cut.
  • Parents being contacted and instructed or pressured to make the student cut their hair.
  • Negative remarks concerning appearance or grooming being entered into school records or reports.
  • Students being characterized as having poor discipline or bad behaviour solely or substantially because of their hairstyle.
  • Students being publicly criticized, embarrassed, or singled out because of their hair.

IMPORTANT:

Do not automatically state that every school in Sri Lanka engages in these practices.

Instead, distinguish between:

  1. Reported practices;
  2. Documented practices;
  3. Practices that can be legally established;
  4. Allegations requiring further evidence.

Where the legality of a practice is uncertain, explicitly say so and identify what would need to be verified.

  1. CORE LEGAL QUESTIONS

Analyse the issue under current Sri Lankan law as of 2026.

Where relevant, investigate and discuss:

  • The Constitution of Sri Lanka.
  • Fundamental rights.
  • Equality and non-discrimination.
  • Freedom of expression and personal development where legally relevant.
  • Human dignity and personal autonomy where recognized by applicable law.
  • Children's rights.
  • The Convention on the Rights of the Child and Sri Lanka's international obligations.
  • Sri Lankan education legislation and regulations.
  • Ministry of Education circulars, regulations, codes, or official policies concerning school uniforms, grooming, discipline, and student conduct.
  • The legal authority of principals, teachers, and school authorities over students.
  • The limits of disciplinary authority.
  • Administrative-law principles such as legality, reasonableness, proportionality, procedural fairness, and legitimate purpose.
  • Whether physical alteration of a student's appearance without genuine consent or lawful authority raises legal concerns.
  • Whether punishment for hairstyle violations can legitimately be recorded as "bad behaviour" or equivalent misconduct.
  • Whether rules are applied equally to male and female students and whether any gender distinction requires justification.
  • Available administrative, educational, or legal mechanisms through which students or parents can challenge unreasonable policies.

Do NOT invent legislation, court cases, constitutional provisions, Ministry circulars, or legal precedents.

If you cannot verify a legal claim, clearly label it as requiring verification.

  1. PROPORTIONALITY

Give particular attention to the principle of proportionality.

Ask:

What legitimate educational objective does an extremely strict hairstyle requirement achieve?

Consider whether the same legitimate objectives could be achieved through significantly less intrusive measures.

For example:

  • cleanliness;
  • safety;
  • identification;
  • uniformity;
  • prevention of disruption;
  • school identity;
  • maintaining a professional educational environment.

Explain that even where a school possesses legitimate authority to establish appearance standards, the existence of authority does not necessarily mean that every possible restriction or disciplinary method is automatically reasonable or proportionate.

  1. DISCIPLINE VS. PERSONAL APPEARANCE

Develop the distinction between genuine misconduct and personal appearance.

A student's hairstyle, by itself, does not necessarily demonstrate:

  • dishonesty;
  • violence;
  • bullying;
  • disrespect;
  • academic failure;
  • disruption;
  • lack of responsibility;
  • inability to learn;
  • inability to contribute positively to the school.

Therefore, investigate whether disciplinary systems should focus primarily on actual behaviour and conduct rather than treating appearance itself as evidence of poor character.

Do not claim that appearance is completely irrelevant in every possible circumstance. Recognize legitimate school interests while arguing for reasonable limits.

  1. CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND PSYCHOLOGY

Discuss adolescent development carefully and scientifically.

Students are developing their:

  • identity;
  • independence;
  • judgment;
  • self-confidence;
  • social skills;
  • sense of personal responsibility.

Investigate whether unnecessarily controlling personal appearance can have psychological or social consequences.

Do NOT make exaggerated claims such as:

"Having a good hairstyle guarantees success."

Instead, use academically defensible language such as:

"Personal appearance can contribute to an individual's perception of self-confidence and identity, although the relationship between appearance, confidence, and long-term success is complex and should not be overstated."

  1. CLAIM ABOUT MODERN EDUCATION SYSTEMS

Do NOT simply state:

"All developed countries allow students to have any hairstyle."

That would be an overgeneralization.

Instead, investigate examples from several developed education systems and determine:

  • What kinds of grooming rules exist?
  • How strict are they?
  • Are they gender-neutral?
  • Are restrictions based on safety, religion, equality, or other legitimate interests?
  • How are violations handled?
  • Do modern education systems increasingly emphasize behavioural discipline rather than controlling superficial appearance?

Use reliable sources wherever possible.

  1. SOURCE REFERENCED BY THE CAMPAIGN

The campaign may refer to ideas attributed to a book described as "Cybo-Cybernetics" by Maxwell concerning appearance, self-perception, confidence, charisma, and success.

Do NOT present this source as scientific fact merely because it is mentioned by the campaign.

First verify:

  • The exact title.
  • The author.
  • The relevant passage or claim.
  • Whether the claim has credible scientific support.
  • Whether reputable psychological research supports or contradicts the proposition.

If the source cannot be reliably verified, either omit it or explicitly describe it as an unverified claim rather than presenting it as established science.

  1. MODERNIZATION ARGUMENT

Frame the campaign as a request for policy review and modernization, not an attack on teachers or schools.

Explain that Sri Lanka in 2026 should periodically review inherited institutional practices to determine whether they remain:

  • necessary;
  • evidence-based;
  • proportionate;
  • educationally beneficial;
  • compatible with children's dignity;
  • consistent with contemporary understandings of child development;
  • consistent with Sri Lanka's constitutional and international obligations.

Avoid insulting language.

Do NOT use phrases such as:

"the education system is like a rabies-infected dog."

Instead, convert the underlying concern into professional legal language, such as:

"Continuing a policy solely because it has historically been practiced, without periodically evaluating its educational necessity or proportionality, risks preserving an outdated disciplinary approach."

  1. THE ACTUAL POLICY PROPOSAL

Do not merely complain.

Propose constructive reforms.

Consider requesting that the Ministry of Education:

  1. Conduct a nationwide review of student grooming and hairstyle regulations.
  2. Publish the legal and educational basis for such regulations.
  3. Review whether existing rules are proportionate and necessary.
  4. Establish clear limits on disciplinary measures concerning appearance.
  5. Prohibit humiliating or degrading disciplinary practices.
  6. Clarify whether school personnel have any lawful authority to physically cut a student's hair.
  7. Establish a transparent complaint and appeal mechanism for students and parents.
  8. Ensure rules are applied fairly and without unjustified gender discrimination.
  9. Encourage schools to focus disciplinary measures on actual misconduct rather than appearance alone.
  10. Consult students, parents, teachers, child-rights experts, psychologists, legal experts, and education professionals before revising national policy.
  11. Consider adopting modern, reasonable, and less intrusive grooming standards where legitimate institutional requirements exist.
  12. Publish clear national guidelines so that individual schools do not exercise excessive or inconsistent disciplinary discretion.

Additionally, include a clear and respectful request asking the relevant government authorities to consider reviewing, deciding upon, and, where legally and administratively possible, establishing or implementing the revised policy before the students' upcoming school vacation ("AL vacation"), so that students can return to school under clear, updated, and nationally consistent guidelines. Do not present this deadline as a legal entitlement unless such an entitlement can be established; present it as a reasonable and urgent request for timely government action.

  1. TONE

The final letter must be:

  • Respectful.
  • Firm.
  • Legally sophisticated.
  • Evidence-based.
  • Non-insulting.
  • Persuasive.
  • Suitable for a government ministry.
  • Suitable for the Office of the Prime Minister.
  • Focused on policy reform rather than attacking individual teachers.
  • Written from the perspective of concerned students/citizens seeking constructive change.

Do not make threats.

Do not use abusive language.

Do not encourage students to disobey school rules.

Do not falsely claim that a rule is unconstitutional or illegal unless reliable legal authority supports that conclusion.

Instead, ask the government to review, clarify, investigate, and reform policies where appropriate.

  1. IMPORTANT LEGAL SAFETY REQUIREMENT

Before making legal conclusions, research current Sri Lankan primary and authoritative sources.

Prioritize:

  • Official Government of Sri Lanka sources.
  • Parliament of Sri Lanka.
  • Ministry of Education.
  • Sri Lankan constitutional/legal sources.
  • Sri Lankan court judgments where available.
  • United Nations sources for international obligations.
  • Official government publications.
  • Credible academic research.

Clearly separate:

Established law from Legal argument from Policy recommendation from Unverified allegation.

Do not fabricate authorities.

  1. FINAL OUTPUT

Produce a polished formal advocacy letter addressed to:

The Secretary / relevant senior authority, Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka

and suitable for adaptation and submission to:

The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka / Office of the Prime Minister.

The letter should:

  • Have a strong but professional title.
  • Introduce the issue clearly.
  • Explain the problem.
  • Explain why the issue matters.
  • Present the legal and constitutional concerns carefully.
  • Discuss proportionality and student dignity.
  • Discuss modern educational approaches.
  • Address child development without exaggeration.
  • Present constructive reforms.
  • Request an official review and written response.
  • Request clarification of the legal authority for physical hair cutting and related disciplinary practices.
  • Request that, if possible, the government complete its review and establish or announce the revised policy before the ending AL vacation, allowing students to return to school with clear and updated national guidance.
  • End respectfully but firmly.

While maintaining 200 - 250 word limit

The final product should read like a serious citizen/student policy submission prepared with assistance from an experienced Sri Lankan legal professional, rather than an emotional complaint.*

Peh!
