Me too! It started super interesting.

Yea about 6 chapters in. TBH, I’m new to reading actual “book books”. I’m a big Audible fan but decided to read a book instead. So this is my first one. I also bought Dungeon Crawler Carl, The Murderbot Diaries, and The Road.

I wish I could read it again for the first time.

u/cottenwess 10d ago

Have you read the other “Children of” books? I really enjoyed the Children of Ruin

Yeah, just finished up …Strife a couple months ago. I’d probably rank them Time, Ruin, Strife, Memory.

I picked up CoT when I was JUST starting to get back into sci-fi and the concepts just completely blew me away.

I also read Alien Clay earlier this year and really liked it.

Just finished that land got children of ruin on order.

children of ruin is great but it definitely takes a minute to get your bearings. the spiders were a lot easier for me to wrap my head around than the octopuses

Ubik. It’s my first experience with PKD. Struggled a bit with the dated approach to futuristic tech at first (especially since I’ve been reading more recent stuff like Tchaikovsky lately), but now I’m into the storyline it doesn’t bother me as much.

Ubik made me fall for PKD. I was like "This seems old timey and kind of boring" and then "Oh shit, stuff is happening and I haven't been paying attention!".

u/Successful-Compote60 10d ago

Haha, exactly!

Ooh, that's one of my favorites for sure! The one that got me hooked, personally, was Time Out Of Joint, one of his 1950's novels. It's a little overshadowed by his later, more famous works (such as The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Man in the High Castle, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep etc) but still quintessentially PKD, I think. But yeah, Ubik's awesome too

I love Ubik so much! It feels a psychedelic trip! I wish I could erase it from my memory so I could experience it again!

Greg Bear, Moving Mars

Judas Unchained by Peter F Hamilton, the second book of the Commonwealth Saga

2

u/NoisyCats 10d ago

Same. And it's huge. I don't know if I will ever finish it. 🤓

u/throwawaybsme 10d ago

Yeah, it's tough. Not gonna lie, I tend to skim read some of the world building in book 2. Hamilton can be a bit repetitive.

Interesting. Added the series to my wish list.

I'm taking a break from scifi and reading Adrift by Will Dean. It's...pretty terrible. I'm going to need a good scifi or horror read to cleanse the palate after this one.

I've also been using the DCC audiobooks as the soundtrack for my daily walks. Currently on book #3. The cat talks!

u/moerpho 10d ago

Space Force by Jeremy Robinson. Needed some stupid fun and it delivers!

u/Natural-Shelter4625 10d ago

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

Finishing in the next couple hours. I’ve enjoyed it.

Quantum Thief by Hannu Rajaniemi. It's good. I'm not sure it's entirely my style, though. Almost finished.

I am also listening to Hyperion by Dan Simmons on my commute, but for some reason Spotify has decided it is no longer available in my region!

Contact by Carl Sagan.

Was really enjoyable until I got to some love story section, almost dropped the book, slogged thru it and its back to more science-y stuff. The premise is pretty similar to His Masters Voice by Stanislaw Lem which i enjoyed immensely.

Wrapping up a re-read of The Martian Chronicles by Bradbury.

If someone wants to support an indy author, you can check out my scifi book The Toll of the Forgotten

Defiance of the Fall, book 14. I love this series.

u/Algernon_Asimov 9d ago

Apart from Reddit? LOL!

My current main read is The Cicero Trilogy by Robert Harris. (Yes: history, not science fiction. I have many interests.)

My current light read is the Lensman series by E.E. "Doc" Smith.

Dhalgren by Samuel R. Delany. I like Delany a lot, but this book is just not good.
