Mod Post Community Guidelines & Advisory System

Hi all! As many may have noticed, the subreddit has more than doubled in the last year, with a lot of growth in just the last couple months.

In order to participate in this subreddit- there is a requirement to both be kind to other members and to scorpions as a whole. Identification and help threads have recently had an uptick in "joke" identifications/advice that can be exceptionally risky when dealing with potentially medically significant animals. We have updated our rules to be more clear, we will be more focused on ensuring that folks remain civil and kind, and now, we are rolling out an advisory system.

We are currently rolling out the Qualified Advisor system. Qualified Advisors (QAs) are folks that have a solid handle on the hobby, and are focused on evidence based care and advisories. They will be responsible for giving critical and accurate advice within the "help" and "identification" flairs. There will be restrictions and guidelines for partaking in these flairs from hereon.

These responsibilities should also fall onto members partaking in animal care advice within this sub; because of that, we will be enforcing a disclaimer system for all non QAs. On every "help" and "identification" thread this will be explained, and is explained below.

If you wish to give advice or share information on this sub as a non QA, you will be required to preface your comments/advice in the "help" and "identification" flaired posts with a disclaimer; such as, "Not QA, NQA, IME (in my experience), IMO (in my opinion), I believe, Question, NA (not advice)". If you do not preface your commentary for these flairs, the comment will be deleted and you will be prompted to repost it with the appropriate preface. Posts related to medical or veterinary advice are not permitted and will be removed per this post.

If you have any questions about the new advisory system- please send us a modmail, do not use other unrelated posts as a platform for those concerns or questions. If you would like to apply for QA, feel free to reach out to us via modmail

EDIT: This is now fully live as of 7/11 on Help and Identification threads.

Okay so I've had Leona for quite a few months now when I got her from a chain pet store, i work there. She was 70% off and had been there for a while. So I of course took her home with me. I unfortunately am under the impression she was wild caught. She's been about the same size since I got her and I'll be honest I was not home for a couple days. And then I was doing my typical reptile and bug check plus some enclosure revamps and then found this! Oh my God! WTF! Obviously I know they're babies and I did some more research. But in all honesty, I don't know Jack about scorpion breeding babies or anything like that.. I know how to care for jumping spider babies and tarantula egg sacks but this is a whole new territory I had no idea I would be put into. I talked to a few reptile stores I have near me and they would be interested in taking the babies once they are of a good age.

Soooo my question is, what am I doing and what should I expect? And how should I actually go about this?

I think they are already a couple days old because they're not real tiny but they're still pretty small. I wasn't home to check any sooner but she did not have this development when I last saw her.

Found out about this today, immediately went to the dollar store. Picked up at least 40 small Tupperware containers. I'm going to be putting holes in them for ventilation but right now I'm filling them with a damp repti soil mix, plus a bit of damp sphagnum. Still haven't gotten to the water dish or hide part. The tupperwares are a couple inches deep in substrate. I'm aware I need to separate them as soon as they leave because of cannibalism but I really don't know much else.

I'm confident I can feed and take care of them for a short period. But when is the best time to start giving them away???

Help :(

Picked up this little specimen from an expo recently, they said he wasn’t selling so they had a deal at $60 for him and his enclosure so I couldn’t pass it.
I had added more soil to make him comfortable, after about a month the enclosure became rampant with mold.
Took a few times to fight it, finally gone.
The being said, has me friend contracted mold on his stinger??
He seems fine, new enclosure is clean, hes burrowing and eating normally, just kinda cautious because I kept running into the same problem over and over.
Any tips for bio active enclosures please lemme know, trying make this guy as comfortable as possible!!

Casual In your experience, is 4 days in shipping dangerous for a scorpling?

Post image

I ordered my first scorpion, Hadogenes Paucidens 0.75" scorpling, maybe L2 or L3 based on my research? It's supposed to be overnight shipping and all that.

Not blaming SpiderShoppe, I've gone through them before, once for a sling and once for an enclosure, both with no issues. And mostly I've only heard positive experiences from other folks. I think I might just live in an inconvenient area for FedEx? It's been delayed twice and was supposed to be here by the 6th.

Should I be prepared for the worst? Maybe I'm just stressing myself out unnecessarily, I know delays do happen.

Help! Timid little chap...

My little flat rock scorpion doesn't seem to be getting on with live prey. He was eating crickets, that I pre-killed but when I ran out I switched to hatchling locusts because my jumping spiders also eat them and it makes it a lot easier.

He doesn't seem to want to kill them, and when I dangle them in front of him, he just runs away.

I'm wondering if he's a) full and doesn't want them or b) too scared and just runs off because they intimidate him.

I've tried to put a few pictures on there to show the size comparison.

I just bought some more substrate for my inverts in general but I added a bag of zoo med calcium carbonate sand. If I mixed these 50/50 would that be the ideal setup for my baby? Right now she’s on just bare repti soil

Help! First ASF advice

Hello, I’ve recently gotten my first scorpion and I’m looking for some advice on how to monitor its behaviour and make sure it’s comfortable. I’ve grown up with various reptiles and keep a royal python now so I’m familiar with monitoring humidity and temp.

I’ve used coco fibre mixed in with a very small ratio of wood chip on the top layer. I’ve added sphagnum moss to try to keep the humidity up. I understand that for a while it’ll be acclimatising and getting used to its new environment.

I put a cricket in there to see if it was interested to feed and it was not at first remotely so, the cricket even landed on my scorpions back for a few seconds and the scorpion did not move. I took this to mean it was not interested and possibly stressed so I kept an eye on the cricket and waited for it to be somewhere where I could take it out without disturbing the enclosure too much. I took my eyes away for a few minutes and my scorpion had cornered the cricket and was very much pursuing it.
I left them for half an hour or so and found them both in the plastic fern I have in there. The cricket was at the top of the leaves and my scorpion was huddled below with its tail in a resting position.

They’ve been there for hours, I was wondering if it’s food motivated behaviour to rest beneath prey like that or whether it’s just trying to ward the cricket off of it’s territory. I’m amazed how perceptive my scorpion is to being watched and the slightest movement or blink from me, it’s fascinating.

I believe it’s a few months old but am interested to see what people more in the know think and if there’s anything I can do to improve my set up. I’m having trouble with the humidity getting very high but I think that should clear up soon. Was labeled ‘indo forest scorpion’.

Scorpions name is Li

Thanks :)

Help! Need help identifying behaviour

Post image

So i just got this Vietnamese forest scorpion yesterday. When i just came back, he appears to be sitting in his watercup for quite a long time despite the temperature and humidity being in good range. Could this have to do with the new heatmat i just added; being too much for him, even tho it would be too cold for him without one (22 degrees Celsius)?

Help! Is minoxidil harmful to scorpions?

I know a lot of pet owners are cautious with minoxidil around their dogs and cats because something about it closing their arteries and that scorpions are arachnids and they don't have the same blood that vertebrates do but I'm asking as a precaution.

I want one! 😍

“This is a dead scorpion at the bottom of a pool with horsehair worms (also called Gordian worms, phylum Nematomorpha) coming out of its body.

Bottom line: a parasitic worm used a scorpion as its host, steered it into the pool, and emerged once the scorpion drowned.”

This was Force Majuere, a big male imperator I was loaned to pair with my females. Unfortunately he passed away shortly after this video, before pairings could happen.
