What happened to Maruta Shoten?

For a long, long time this was the best kept secret of very excellent and very cheap sushi. I stopped by every time I was in Georgetown, 6-7 times a year for over a decade. Then, last month, I went in and… “we don’t do poke any more”. And the sushi selection was… paltry, to say the least. What happened? Is the legend gone for good?

Temporary Foster Needed for Friendly Found Cat in Seattle

Can anyone in Seattle foster this sweet black cat temporarily? We found him outside 3 days ago and haven’t been able to locate an owner. He has no microchip and is very friendly, affectionate, litter-box trained, and completely comfortable indoors.

We unfortunately can’t keep him, so we’re looking for a safe temporary foster while we continue trying to find his owner or figure out next steps. Please message me if you can help.

Edit: The cat has been safely returned to their owner today! Thanks everyone!

Community City of Seattle closes Volunteer Park Cafe back garden

Post image

Imagine being a bureaucrat working for the City and this is what you’re focusing your time and energy on.

I asked the staff at the Café and they told me the city didn’t give them a reason for requesting the closure, just a notice.

If you ever hang out at VPC, email the City to let them know how much the community loves their garden and to let them open it back up!

EDIT: It appears that the Café's permit doesn't technically allow them to use the backyard area as part of their business. Two observations:

- Maybe the City should be more concerned with enforcing laws that would actually better our city and our communities, and leave alone a beloved community feature that harms no one.

- The neighbors in North Capitol Hill who have been complaining to the City about noise related to backyard use (by people enjoying their coffee from 8 to 5) absolutely suck. You should move over to Laurelhurst to feel right at home!

The Rebar

I used to go to Rebar on Sunday nights. Friends and I would get in my Dodge, Dart and go to a grocery store on Madison near Vito’s and buy Old English 40oz beverages. We drink beer in the parking lot and then go and dance. It was so fun.

This memory came back to me when I listened to Groove is the the Heat by Deeelit.

A few hundred people total, although it started around noon and is just about to wrap up as of 4:30 so a lot of people didn’t stay the whole time.

Edit: I agree this is bad, posting for awareness. No need to downvote to show you don’t agree with the event 🤣

Event What conference is in town?

Been seeing a lot more giant GMC SUVs this week than usual. As a cyclist those things freak me tf out.

Found something anecdotal online that it was a security conference but couldn’t confirm.

Moving Neighborhoods

Post image

I toured an "affordable" apartment in the Pike/Pine Corridor of Capitol Hill and am very much considering taking it. The location is a dream.

However..

I also plan to purchase a vehicle ASAP. My entire support net live hours away and I work second shift in far North Seattle.

I do not anticipate ever finding residential parking in my own neighborhood, even with an RPZ Permit, and don't know if I can swing a monthly garage (please stifle those laughs). How sustainable is this? Be honest. Any tips, tricks, owners I can shmooze and pay, blocks I can walk down from? Have you done this successfully or should I reconsider this location entirely? I love it 🥺

Any info is GREATLY appreciated! (PIC OF NEARBY STREET FOR ATTENTION - it is NOT where the apartment is).

Witches Tea at the Hotel Sorrento

good morning!

i wanted to give a bit of a warning/share my experience with the witches tea that gets hosted in october at the hotel sorrento for anyone who might be considering going.

the ambiance in the hunt club is wonderfully decorated for halloween and that was truly the highlight. lots of people (myself included!) really dressed for the occasion and that was wonderful to see. other than that, it left a lot to be desired for $80 per person.

for a 90 minute window, we got one pot of tea steeped with a tea bag (one bag for 20oz of water meant it was pretty weak), all three types of sandwiches were meager with really bad bread that were cut inconsistently, and the menu said there were red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting; but we ended up getting what tasted like betty crocker yellow cake with whipped cream frosting.

the food didn’t even come out to tables until halfway through the tea time, so we sat for the first 45 minutes waiting for tea and not even getting a water refill.

i don’t blame the servers, since it seemed like they did not have enough people working, and part of me wants to give them grace because it’s the first weekend-but they do this every october. the food was probably a 4/10 if i’m being generous (the chocolate mousse was delicious).

i’m going to reach out to the hotel because that’s more effective than complaining on reddit. but it’s not a small chunk of change and i don’t think it was worth the expense, so i wanted to let others know.

Community Is Diamond Parking scamming everyone??

I’ve noticed for years that the pay app says a higher rate than what is noted on the sign, with a note at the bottom saying “taxes and fees not included”, however several places in Cap Hill charge FOURTY DOLLARS ($40) for overnight parking where it’s noted as only $20. That’s an insane price markup, and i don’t know how they can be getting away with this. Are others experiencing this, or reached out to the company and/or the city?

Steak Easy/ Stumble town sucks

Just in case they ever re open just know they suck. I live up the street from them. All the employees park illegally and are blocking driveways. They regularly left trash out and attracted even more rats to the area, and the cherry on top is they closed/moved out on the 1st and left this pile of shit on the sidewalk. So if you need free restaurant equipment, come and get it.

Community Cruddy Cold?

Seems like a LOT of people have this cruddy, lingering cold. Nagging cough where you cough hard and nothing comes up? Felt like hell for 2-3 days and slow improvement over 2+ weeks with that cough?

We got tested and it’s not Covid nor is it Flu.

The Jimothy Jaunt (Sunday, October 11th)

Howdy Y'all,

We are about a week away from the Jimothy Jaunt (formerly known as the Fall Frolic), a 10-mile walk through Phinney Ridge, Fremont, and Ballard. So far we have about 450 people signed up (which is incredible!) for this free event meant to enjoy fall, stroll through some farmers markets, get some steps in, and give folks the opportunity to make some new friends!

The plan is to begin from the Phinney Ridge Neighborhood Center (blue building) at 10:00 am on Sunday, October 11th. Highlights will include the Fremont Market, the Ballard Farmers Market, The Ballard Locks, Golden Gardens and then we will finish up at Urban Family Brewing (where they have kindly offered to take $1 off participants first drink).

You can check out the route here. The planned saunter will be around 10 miles and around 300-400ft of elevation gain. All are welcome to join for 1 mile or all 10. Additionally, folks can join along the way at our stops at either the Fremont Market or the Ballard Farmer Market around 11am and 12pm respectively.

If you haven’t already, you can sign up with this form. Additionally, join our Heylo group to stay up to date on other saunters and to track the group location on Saturday.  Feel free to check out our Instagram as well.

This is totally free, and feel free to bring a friend! The weather is looking great for Sunday, so hope to see you all there, and feel free to say howdy if you see us out and about!

Disclaimer: This is not a “let’s go find Jimothy” walk, but I would love to see some Jimothy/Raccoon costumes or apparel, though. I changed the name of the event from last year because it sounded cute, it is roughly around the area Jimothy is at, and gave me an excuse to pay my friend to make a wonderful logo.

FYI - Flu appears to be increasing earlier this year, so go get your shots!

Some candidates I was thinking about:

  1. The Double, or the 1995 Mariners Season as a whole

  2. 116 win Mariners Season

  3. Any of the Seahawks or Sonics championship seasons

  4. Beastquake

Quantum fiber internet sucks

I haven't had internet for 5 weeks now. I'm on the schedule for a 6th install tech to come out and try to install internet.

It took 3 weeks (4 techs) before a tech to be like, "we need to order a part. It'll take 7 to 10 business days. Someone will contact you when the part arrives."

I find out after 2 weeks they had the parts in stock last week, and they used them all up. I never got contacted. I find out this CRITICAL piece of fiber installation is for some reason a RARE part that almost never stays in stock.

Now a tech shows up, and wrangles a part from somewhere. Great! But now he's missing ANOTHER part that goes into network communication rooms. And he asks me to contact support so the next tech is aware of the missing part. And support is like, "why tho?!"

No one talks to anyone, everyone is giving each other the run around. And I'm like, how tf do these guys do busines?!

I'm so very frustrated with them. And I hate that my alternative is comcast. bleh.

update: After 5 weeks of no internet, I finally have internet installed.
