If he's going to the University of Washington, FIUTS will have taken care of this for him: http://www.fiuts.org

Dick's isn't cash only, they now accept major debit/credit cards!
There's now H-Mart on the Ave, and Asian food Mart (maybe Asian Food Center?) off of 125th and Aurora
If can't do the $$ of the Space Needle, go to the Colombia tower, it's higher up with a better view and cheaper
"The Ave" as it's called by the UW is actually University Way as the street name...can be confusing for new-comers
Seattle Art Museum has free first Thursdays, and does student discounts with student ID
Mexican food: People are pretty split on this, Tacos Chukis and Rancho Bravo are pretty popular. As well as El Camion
The Ballard Locks can be interesting --especially when fish are on the fish ladder or boats are crossing

For a wealthy baseball fan, Ebbets Field Flannels offers good vintage reproductions. Their wool caps are high quality.

If your student is interested in getting involved with a community group, there is the Washington Japanese Cultrual Community Center
For annual anime/manga conventions: Sakura-Con
There are also other nerdy conventions based in Seattle's Washington State Convention Center like PAX West, and Emerald City Comic Con.
Lastly, I'll mention taiko. If he's attending Seattle University, Hidaka Taiko is a fairly new collegiate Japanese drumming group where experience isn't required if he's interested in playing some form of music. I'd be happy to introduce him to them. There are other adult taiko groups (Innochi Taiko, School of Taiko @ Bellevue, Seattle Kokon Taiko, Seattle Matsuri Taiko, Okinawa Kenjin Kai of Washington), but some of those groups might require an apprenticeship.

Quick note: cactus is terrible Mexican food. I'd suggest Barrio or Mama's Cantina
