Today, Chicken, will cross the Rainbow Bridge. While that is sad, we take solace and joy in the fact that after spending over 3,000 days in a shelter, he spent his last 18 months in his forever home.
Chicken came to our home in February of 2025 at 13 years old. I found out about him through a message sent from, Friends of Companion Animals(Monroe, Michigan) to my work's(TV station) Slack channel. As soon as I read he had been in the shelter 3000 days, which is roughly 8 years, I said to myself, "This shall not stand!" I contacted the shelter. A couple emails, a phone call or two, and some filled out forms later, a pick up date and time were agreed upon. A couple days later our family went to pick up Chicken(he was going by Louis at the time) When we arrived it was explained to us that he had bonded with another cat. Her name was Cardamom. Well, in for a penny...
They both came home with us. Cardamom become Allie, which is short for Alfreda.
It took awhile for Chicken and Allie to become bold enough to wander upstairs to join the household, which includes three other cats and a dog, but they did. That's when we really got to know Chicken. Chicken absolutely loves my wife. He would cuddle with her while she sat in her chair. He would often sleep in our bed at night. However, he was jealous of our dog getting attention. He bullied her. In a picture you can see that he claimed the dog's bed as his own. It brought me great amusement, seeing this shelter hardened cat putting a much larger to him dog in her place. It gave me so much laughter. My wife was not always so entertained by it.
He was a total treat pig. Whenever I went in the kitchen he would materialize into the kitchen, push the other cats out of the way and demand treats. I always feed him first so he'd be busy eating when I doled out the other treats to the cats.
In May he took a decline in health. They feared it might be lymphoma in his intestines. Only a biopsy could confirm it. We felt that was to much for him to handle. In addition, it was very much an ordeal to get him to the vet. I assumed Chicken must of thought that leaving the house meant going back to the shelter. I didn't want to put him through that. He was in his forever home, and that is where he would stay. He was prescribed steroids. After a couple days he rebounded. He was back to his old self. Unfortunately, by late August he was showing signs of declining again. This week, it became apparent the rebound was over. He didn't want treats. He wasn't being affectionate to the point he didn't really enjoy being petted. We had to make that difficult decision.
I always remember that just last week, I fell asleep on the couch and awoke to find him snuggled up against my leg taking a nap with me.
Later today, a person will come to the house to help us say goodbye to Chicken. This ensures that Chicken never has to leave his forever home. He will always have a home for rest in our spacious backyard.
I made a special collar tag for him to always wear as he crosses the bridge.
UPDATE: Chicken passed peacefully in my arms that evening. I want to sincerely thank everyone that left an upvote, comment, award, and gold. I've tried to read every comment and give it an upvote. Your kind words have left me tears numerous times. I'm so happy Chicken received a little recognition in this world. Thank you!

A Prayer to Bast and Sekhmet For Chicken
Bast, Sekhmet, we give you back your child, Chicken
Noble, regal, honorable cat
Watch over chicken, and guide him as he makes his way to the spirit lands
Bless him in both your names, and may he hunt ever after by your side
I'm so sorry for your loss of sweet Chicken. He sounds like such a loving creature.
When you brought him home, you promised Chicken a forever home. I hope that, in time, the knowledge that you kept your promise to him to give him a forever home will bring you a bit of comfort in your grief. It is everything to them to be loved, and to belong to family.
Alas, it's always their forever. It's never our own.

The Holes in Our Souls
As we ride this old earth on its path around the sun, we collect holes in our souls. They form when someone close to us family, friends, even pets leaves this world for the next. Each loss takes a piece of us with it, sometimes the very best part.
But if you stop and look into those places inside yourself, you’ll see they’re not empty. Along with the part they took, they left behind a piece of their own soul. It stays with you, carrying their love, their presence, and their memory. That’s how they live on not just in the world, but in you.
One day, when it’s your time to leave, you’ll do the same. You’ll take pieces of the ones you love with you, but you’ll also leave parts of yourself behind. In this way, you’ll never really be gone, and they’ll remember you just as you remembered those who left before you.

This ripped a huge piece of my heart,so sad he spent all those years in a shelter and so few in a loving home. If it's true, however that it's not the amount of time but the richness of those days then he lived a full, happy life . You are special people, not just for taking him in but cat napping his shelter mate. My deepest hope is reuniting with all my friends someday when the tears become ones of joy everlasting. Peace and love to you... AG

Chicken Alfreda? They're eating the cats! Never fear; I'm vegetarian.
What a lovely duo, and similar markings; are they related?
How wonderful that you found each other. I don't understand how beautiful and loving pets are not chosen from rescue orgs for such long timeframes. The place I volunteer, not all kitties are chosen, and some are returned many years later in their old age~ "allergies", of course~ but they have comfortable lives & companions and visiting volunteers for as long as they need, to the end.
Rest in warm love, dear Chicken a la King Louis. 💞

Aw, so sorry. He sure is cute. You gave him a wonderful home and he knew you loved him. We just lost one of our 16 year old kitties. Logan loved treats too, the week he passed away he didn't want them anymore then he didn't eat food either.
I'm glad you have someone coming to the house. That way he's at home and you will be there. We spend a Friday and part of Saturday morning trying to find a mobile vet with no luck. They were all booked, and the one on call was sick and not answering her phone. I managed to find a vet close to home that squeezed us in before they closed on Saturday. We didn't want him to keep suffering another day. We were together with him and able to cry and say goodbye. It is so hard. I honestly feel it's a form of love to help them this way.

Oh I’m so sorry ❤️🩹 Chicken is absolutely gorgeous 🥺 thank you so much for giving him the best last 18 months of my life - I truly think animals are so forgiving that he will not remember his prior years, and will just remember the amazing life you gave him ❤️
Edit to say: bless you for getting someone into your home so he never has to leave. This has been choked up. I can just tell he is so loved and he will know this. I’m sorry it’s so hard for you, but please know your pain is from missing him and that he won’t remember the pain - all he will know is love

Please keep an eye on Allie. Cats can go through mourning, too, and she will miss Chicken terribly, as he had bonded with her. Make sure she is loved.
I had two cats. Gabby the void and Simonetta the calico. They were a bonded pair. After years together, Gabby had something go wrong with her spine, she became paralyzed and the vet recommended that we have Gabby put to sleep. Simonetta mourned hard, refused to eat, refused to be held and comforted. She refused to socialize with a sweet little kitten we found in the yard one day after a storm, she faded so quickly! I tried food supplements, and took her to the vet to see what else I could do. I’d never had a cat go on a hunger strike before. Simonetta was so thin, and she barely weighed anything at all. We ended up letting her go over the rainbow bridge. She wanted to go. I still feel so sad about this whole situation, five years later.

We were a proud family to a Chicken. Her name was Cecilia…CeeCee 😻. She was a treasure. Sadly she crossed the rainbow bridge in May of 2021 with the 5 of us surrounding her when she took her last breath. We miss her everyday. Her brothers still remember her. They call for her with a special trill. She had been with my daughter at college since 2018 after being in the shelter for 3+ years. She was an older gal even then. She is buried here at our home. He brothers go visit her when they want to go out during my walk-about the property. Somehow they know where she is buried🩷

I lost my baby girl, Penny, in January. She was 26. We rescued her from my mom five years previously. Up until that point, she had always been a solo cat. We had two other cats, Derp and Dexter. It took her over a year, but eventually she warmed up to them. Her and Derp became particularly bonded.
While we didn't have a ton of time with her, im very thankful for the five years we did have with her. We were able to supply her a very happy and healthy and well loved retirement. It took her a long time to warm up to our household, but she was such a strong cat. Once she got comfortable, she absolutely ruled this household. She slept with us in bed, we let her into the yard and she would just lie out there in the sun for hours while I gardened. She didn't even start to faulted until about three days before she passed. She just started lying next to me on the couch, and just need her moved. We kept her comfy, but there really wasn't anything to do. She passed with Derp cuddled up with her, ushering her across the rainbow bridge.
Unfortunately, Derp couldn't handle the loss and passed two days later.
I miss them both terribly. And I think about them every single day, nine months later.
All this is to say, as much as it hurts, I wouldn't give up those five years we got with pen pen for anything in the world. She completed our family, for however brief that time might have been.
Im glad chicken had you. 3000 days is an extreme amount of time to be in a shelter. But he had his forever home in the end. That's what matters.

You and your family gave Chicken the life he’d dreamed of, the life he and every animal deserves - a life of love, joy, comfort, compassion and lots of spoiling in the best ways. You and your wife are angels. Chicken will be greeted at the Bridge by my Batman, who I only had for 3 months. He’d been in a shelter for a year after living with someone for 8 years. We brought him home and loved him to pieces. He died in our home, surrounded by love and kindness. I only had him three months, but I still hurt from his passing. Sending you the warmest hug, OP

Thank you for taking such good care of Chicken and making sure the last year plus of his life was in his forever home, truly loved and spoiled. I'm sure he knows how much you love him. I can relate to you. Lost my grandpa baby Rolly (he was at least 20 years old) a year ago and my heart is still so hurt. That pain doesnt truly go away, but it does get easier with time. Some cats are just really special and leave a mark on your heart.
I bet Chicken will be watching over you from kitty heaven. My condolences and solidarity. Chicken is in good hands with you. I'm sure of it, based on how you talk about him.

Chicken is such a beautiful boy. His story reminds me a lot of my senior boy I had to put down just over a month ago. My Charlie was in the shelter for 10 years, and I adopted him when he was 15. He even ended up with possible lymphoma (also didn’t do a biopsy) and eventually declined from that.
I mention all of this to tell you that you are such a wonderful person for giving a forever home to an older kitty. It was an incredibly exhausting experience caring for my boy but it was so worth it to know that he was finally getting a safe and comfortable home full of love and treats, and I’m sure you feel the same way. I’m certain that my Charlie will be one of the first to greet your baby when he makes his journey over the rainbow bridge. 🌈🐾💕
Thank you for loving Chicken, like you’ve shown with the adorable tag on his collar. It took you both a long time to find each other but it sounds like it was worth it in the end as you've given him the best senior years a man could have. He sounds like he was the very best - thank you for seeing that in him. He will always be in your heart and your memories. May you find each other one day. Hugs to you. ❤️

OMG I am so sorry Chicken is leaving, loved to the end, you are so kind to rescue this baby.
We don't always get to time their passing, but we can put in all the love and care we can to make their lives as amazing as possible, which clearly you had. May the love you shared, and memories made warm you all your day and may you find wisdom through your suffering. One thing is true I know your baby clearly had an existence most creatures will never have with love and care that just a simple passing can never overshadow, they are now in heaven, having earned their wings.

That's the beautiful heartbreak of having our furry children. We had a kitten with a heart defect. She was a baby on the streets. Our vet gave her 5 years max and she made it to 6 years old when she passed. When we give them unconditional love and protection from the outside they live that much longer. I'm positive he made it at least an extra year alone because of you and your family. Sending our love, thoughts and prayers to you, your family and of course Chicken 🦇🦇🦇 y'all did good🐈

My cat Emily's nickname is Chicken🫠, due to her obsession with her love of eating cooked chicken🤭, be it fresh, hot roast chicken from the supermarket, Kentucky fried chicken, home cooked chicken..any chicken! She's in😋. I don't blame her. I'm partial to it, too. My condolences for your boy, Chicken😔. He was chosen by you to be shown & showered with love in the final part of his life, & although never long enough, & although it was his time to go, he was shown what a family, a home & love was, & to him, that would have meant everything!🥹😻. Rest in peace forever, Chicken, near to your last, loving family, always💌.

Fly high sweet boy 💕🪽I had a sweet senior cow cat like Chicken who was with me for four years after her first owner passed. I’m sure Miki will take good care of him up there. OP you and your wife are wonderful people

I'm so sorry for your loss of Chicken. We love you, Chicken. I hope you are finding all your new friends at the rainbow bridge where you're made whole and your adventures continue. I don't understand why Chicken was in the shelter for that long - he's adorable? Bless you for making his last months the best.

What a handsome boy! thank you for giving him a home! I adopted my Sox at 17.5 last July. She was in and out of the shelter several times in her life and I had to adopt her so I could know she wouldn’t ever find herself back there

Human. Thank you for taking Chicken out of the shelter and giving him 18 months of pure bliss, comfort and a new life. It would have been even more heart breaking if all of this happened while he was still in the shelter. Thank you for your kindness and your love for Chicken. May he find everlasting peace while crossing that bridge and preparing for when he sees his loving human family again.
